Session 372: Black Women Athletes Reimagining Sports [ICYMI] Aug 14, 2024
    Show notes

Like many of you, I’ve spent the past couple of weeks glued to the tv watching the Paris Olympics and in constant awe of the talent and athleticism of the athletes. Gymnastics is always one of my favorite competitions to watch but this year I was also tuned in for the track and field events and basketball. There was just no shortage of excellence on display. And as often happens, feats of Black women being excellent are often met with racism and sexism. A few years ago, right after the Tokyo Olympics, we released a conversation with Dr. Leeja Carter, a feminist sport psychology practitioner and the CEO of Coalition for Food and Health Equity that feels just as timely today.

During our conversation we discussed the ways that gendered racism shows up in sports, how the strong black woman trope impacts athletes, and how athletes are using platforms like social media to tell more of their story.

BONUS: Exploring Themes from Inside Out 2 Aug 09, 2024
    Show notes

I don’t know about you all, but I’m still unpacking all the feels from Inside Out 2, from the realistic depiction of anxiety attacks to seeing new emotions show up as main character Riley steps into her teenage years. Joining me today to explore some of the major themes featured in the movie is our Therapist Support Specialist and head of the TBG Thrive Tribe, Licensed Associate Professional Counselor, Gorgeous West. And, as a special treat, my two sons also joined me to offer their perspectives on the film as well.

We discussed the scenes that stuck with us the most from the film, how therapists can reference the film to break down tough emotional concepts with clients, plus analyze the film’s most central character, Anxiety.

    Session 371: Decentering Romance Aug 07, 2024
    Show notes

So many of us have been raised to prioritize romantic partnership and finding “the one,” over anything else, including some of our other, long-standing platonic relationships. Today we’re exploring the idea of Decentering Romance — a concept you may have seen on your social media feeds — which asks us to explore what it looks like to seek romantic desire without letting it push out the other important relationships in our lives.

Joining me for this discussion is licensed marriage and family therapist, Tiffany Hall. Tiffany is a coach, speaker, and writer based in the Philadelphia area who is passionate about working with women to understand the roles they play in their relationships and how it impacts who they are. During our conversation, we discussed the pitfalls of making romantic love the center of your life, how you can still maintain your friendships when dating, and the cultivation of family dynamics that honor non-romantic life partners.

Session 370: Graduating From Therapy Jul 31, 2024
    Show notes

When a therapist decides to terminate with a client, it may bring up lots of feelings for the client around shame, embarrassment, and rejection. Online, you may have seen people referring to termination as being “fired” by their therapist. Let’s dig into this a little bit more and explore the reasons why a therapist might “fire” their client.

Returning to dig deeper into this with me are Dr. Donna Oriowo, an award-winning DEI advocate, international speaker and certified sex and relationship therapist in the Washington D.C. metro area and Dr. D'Andria Jackson, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Psychological Consultant, and mental health speaker. During our conversation, we discussed some of the reasons why a therapist might terminate with a client, strategies for dealing with feelings of rejection that may come up after a therapist terminates with you, and how to become comfortable with the idea of one day graduating from therapy.

TBG U: Securing Your First Big Girl Job Jul 30, 2024
    Show notes

Get ready, because class is almost in session. Welcome to the TBG University podcast tailored for the 20-something who’s packing for a new year on campus, thinking through their gap year, enrolling in a community college, grabbing their stoles for graduation, and everything in between. I’m your host & TBG U Coordinator, Jayna Ellis.

On TikTok, you’ll often find jokes about how many of us felt like we only had a job as a barista waiting for us at the end of our 4 years of college. At times, the post-grad job market can seem pretty bleak, which is why today, I’m joined by an expert in helping Gen Z find jobs to provide some tips on how to navigate this process. Her name is Jade Walters, and she is the founder of The Ninth Semester, a platform that provides weekly career tips + job postings for an audience of 100,000 early career professionals to help them secure the bag and grow in their budding careers. Adding onto that experience, she also works in candidate marketing as an Employer Branding Specialist at WayUp, a job board for students and grads.

In our conversation, we discuss some tips for the application and interview process, how to navigate the catch-22 of needing experience to get a job while also needing a job to get experience, and ways to keep it pushing when it feels like all you’re getting is no's and rejection letters.

Session 368: Therapists As Humans Jul 17, 2024
    Show notes

While therapists are often revered for our contributions to the mental wellness of others, our culture can also be guilty of denying them us humanity with assumptions that we’re always willing to provide therapeutic advice at the drop of a dime or that we don’t feel things too.

Today, I brought the group chat back together to discuss how therapists are showing up in our everyday lives. Dr. Ayanna Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith joined me to discuss the importance of setting boundaries with friends and family when seeking therapeutic advice, how to ensure we’re not allowing our work to bleed into our personal lives, and the biggest misconceptions people tend to have about therapists' lives.

Session 366: A Guide to Getting Started On Becoming A Therapist Jul 03, 2024
    Show notes

Some of you may know that July is one of my favorite months of the year, and that’s because it’s when we observe Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This year, we’ve chosen the theme, Holding Space for Healers, putting the spotlight on the therapists and all those who’ve dedicated their careers to holding space for others. All month long, you can expect conversations centered around the experiences and perspectives of mental health professionals.

To kick the month off, we’re sharing a compilation of some of the greatest gems, tips, and insights from our 3-part “Becoming a Therapist” series. You’ll hear from my accomplished and brilliant colleagues — Josephine Ampaw Greene, Dr. Kimberly Applewhite, Dr. D’Andria Jackson, and Dr. Donna Oriowo – as they share their advice on navigating the licensure process, doing the internal work necessary before seeing clients, some of the practical and financial concerns involved with being a therapist, and what it looks like to take care of yourself outside of your work as a therapist.
