Session 380: Black Women In Ghostwriting Oct 09, 2024
    Show notes

When we hear the word “ghostwriter,” what may come up are images of rappers in the studio having someone else write their lyrics. But have you ever considered that some of your favorite viral pop culture moments – from speeches to text messages — were orchestrated by ghostwriters, many of whom are Black women?

Today, I’m joined by Pauleanna Reid, who is a celebrity ghostwriter that helps high-profile leaders and doers turn their personal stories into powerful brand assets. She is the founder of WritersBlok, a full-service ghostwriting agency, composed of a team of content ninjas responsible for some of the most talked-about pop culture moments, books, and noteworthy speeches. During our conversation we discussed how ghostwriters collaborate with high-profile clients, why we shouldn’t associate hiring a ghostwriter with a lack of intellect or talent, and how ghostwriting can provide an untraditional path for those who want to enter the publishing industry.

*Please note that this episode contains a story involving suicidal thoughts, which may be triggering for some listeners.*

Session 379: Domestic Violence & Coping With Triggers Oct 02, 2024
    Show notes

Unfortunately, it feels like every day there is a new incident of domestic abuse that happens to unfold all over our social media timelines, and with it, the potential to encounter violent footage or hear various arguments in support of the abuser. For survivors of domestic violence, it can be difficult to avoid and then cope with being exposed to such triggering content. Joining me today to discuss domestic violence and retraumatization is registered social worker, therapist, content creator, and speaker, Simone Saunders. Simone is the founder and director of The Cognitive Corner, a culturally responsive and trauma-informed group practice.

During our conversation we discussed what retraumatization means and how it manifests itself both mentally and physically, how to practice social media self-care when a triggering incident hits your timeline, and changing the way we discuss domestic violence to be more considerate of survivors.

Bonus: How to Die Alone w/ Natasha Rothwell Sep 27, 2024
    Show notes

Many of us fell in love with Natasha Rothwell through her role as the hilarious Kelli in HBO’s Insecure, and later sustained that love as she appeared as Belinda Lindsey in The White Lotus. Natasha is back on our screens, and this time, she’s starring in a show that she also created and executive-produced. It’s called How to Die Alone, and it’s currently streaming on Hulu.

I’m thrilled that Natasha joins us this week to chat about some of the major themes of How to Die Alone including self-sabotage, loneliness, and feeling as if you’re behind in life. We also discussed the significance of having a Black, female, plus-sized main character, how the show approaches tough situations such as friendship breakups, and how Natasha is managing IRL feelings of imposter syndrome while also continuing to channel “main character energy.”

    Session 378: Navigating a PCOS Diagnosis Sep 25, 2024
    Show notes

According to the World Health Organization, 8-13% of women are affected by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and it is also the leading cause of infertility for women. To explore more about this syndrome and its specific impact on Black women, I’m joined today by Sasha Ottey, a clinical and research microbiologist and the founder and executive director of PCOS Challenge: The National Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Association. After she was diagnosed with PCOS, Sasha founded PCOS Challenge and has since grown the organization to over 55,000 members. Her leadership focuses on advocating for research funding, innovation, and the development of safe and effective treatments for PCOS.

During our conversation, we discuss why over 70% of women go undiagnosed for PCOS, the common symptoms and experiences of women with PCOS, and how to advocate for yourself to your medical team when fearing that you may have PCOS.

Session 376: Sexuality As We Age Sep 11, 2024
    Show notes

In yet another episode of our 2024 Sex Positive September celebration, we’re discussing the ways in which our sex lives change and evolve as we get older. While the symptoms women experience during menopause and perimenopause can cause our sex lives to shift in some challenging ways, that doesn’t mean you still can’t embrace sexual vibrancy no matter the age. Joining me for today’s conversation is the New York Times Bestselling author of "Grown Woman Talk," Dr. Sharon Malone. Dr. Malone is a nationally known expert in women’s health, serving as the Chief Medical Advisor at Alloy Women’s Health, a telehealth company that focuses on women over 40.

Dr. Malone and I chatted about all things menopause & sex, including how to combat some of the various symptoms that can make the idea of having sex less than appealing. We also discuss the importance of continued OBGYN visits even as you reach the end of your reproductive years, plus all the reasons why grown womanhood is something to look forward to, not to fear.

    Session 375: Redefining Pleasure Sep 04, 2024
    Show notes

For the fourth year in a row, Therapy For Black Girls invites you to join us in celebrating Sex Positive September, a month in which we center the importance of Black women’s pleasure, agency, and sexual liberation. And there's no better way to kick off this month’s programming than with a conversation with returning guest Dr. Janelle Frederick, also known as the Vagina Rehab Doctor. Dr. Janelle is a pelvic floor physical therapist who uses social media to produce shame-free, entertaining, and high-quality sex education.

In our conversation, we discussed some of the overlooked contributors to sexual pleasure, the ways in which anxiety and depression can impact a person’s ability to have pleasurable sex, and what we wish our parents would have taught us about sex.

Session 374: Black Women In Sports Media Aug 28, 2024
    Show notes

Athletes like Angel Reese & Sha’Carri Richardson have so brilliantly led women’s sports into the national spotlight, but with this has come lots of negative attention and straight-up negligent media coverage of these athletes and their sports. I wanted to hear from Black Women Sports journalists both in front of and behind the camera to explore what’s needed to correct some of these biased narratives.

Joining me for this Black women in sports media roundtable are supervising producer Jasmine Ellis, and Emmy-award winning journalist Jemele Hill. Jasmine has worked on shows such as Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe's "A Touch More,” Speak.Easy for CNN+, and ESPNS’s SC6. And Jemele, making her return to the TBG Podcast, is a contributing writer for The Atlantic where she covers the intersection between sports, race, politics, gender and culture. During our conversation, we discussed the barriers that exist for Black women to enter the sports media space, the importance of cultural competency when covering women’s sports, and why we can’t just “stick to sports” when talking about female athletes.

    TBG U Girl Chat: Let's Talk Summer 2024 Aug 27, 2024
    Show notes

Summer, is that you? Sure, it’s August, but we have a few more weeks to enjoy this weather, so let’s celebrate accordingly.

Welcome to the TBG University podcast, tailored for the 20-something who’s still obsessing over the finale of Love Island, replaying the hottest song of the summer, getting her tote bag packed for the first day of classes, and everything in between. Here at TBG, we believe in the healing power of sisterhood, and one of our favorite parts of female friendship is getting to sit down and kiki about everything that’s going on in our lives at the moment. So in this special girl chat episode, Jayna Ellis, TBG Coordinator and the Associate Producer of the TBG Podcast, Zariah Taylor, took some time to reflect on our summers.

In our girl chat today, we explore the pressure to have a “productive” summer, dive in to some recent pop culture, and share some advice for both the people going back to school and the post-graduate whose feeling unsure about their new normal.

    Session 373: Equine Therapy Aug 21, 2024
    Show notes

After listening to Cowboy Carter far too much over this summer and hearing Beyoncé tell us to “look at that horse, look at that horse, look at that horse,” it was only right to then find out about equine-assisted psychotherapy, a form of therapy that incorporates a live horse in session with a client.

To learn more about this unique type of therapy, I’m joined this week by 2nd year MSW candidate, Jasmine Morris. Jasmine works at Ebony Horsewomen Equestrian and Therapeutic Center in Hartford, Connecticut, where she serves as an Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy clinician. During our conversation we explore what a session of equine-assisted psychotherapy looks like, the potential benefits one could reap through this form of therapy, and how interacting with horses can help us build on our coping and emotional skills.
