    Show notes

Myles Werntz (PhD, Baylor University) is associate professor of theology and director of Baptist studies at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. He is the author or editor of several books, including Bodies of Peace and A Field Guide to Christian Nonviolence. David C. Cramer (PhD, Baylor University) is managing editor at the Institute of Mennonite Studies, sessional lecturer at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, and teaching pastor at Keller Park Church in South Bend, Indiana.

David and Myles recently wrote a book called A Field Guide to Christian Nonviolence and this is the topic of our conversation. We discuss a biblical case for nonviolence and some pushbacks including the conquest of Canaan. We also discuss the killer at the door, policing, nonviolent revolts, and pulling up violent systems by the roots.

Theology in the Raw Conference - Exiles in Babylon

At the Theology in the Raw conference, we will be challenged to think like exiles about race, sexuality, gender, critical race theory, hell, transgender identities, climate change, creation care, American politics, and what it means to love your democratic or republican neighbor as yourself. Different views will be presented. No question is off limits. No political party will be praised. Everyone will be challenged to think. And Jesus will be upheld as supreme.

S9 Ep942: Marriage, masculinity, platforming, weed, alcohol, pride flags, & other questions Jan 31, 2022
    Show notes

I received a ton of questions from my Patreon supporters, many of which I answered through Patreon, but some of which I address out loud in this podcast.

    Questions addressed on this episode:

How do you know if you’re called to marriage?

What does the Bible say about masculinity and femininity?

How will I handle my growing platform?

Is it wrong to smoke weed? Drink alcohol?

Should Christians have a problem with a public school teacher displaying a pride flag?

Why do so many smart Spirit-filled Christians disagree on interpretations of Scripture?

What’s the meaning of kephale (“head”) in 1 Cor 11:3 and Eph 5:23?

    And many other questions.

S9 Ep941: The Brothers Karamazov (and Other Things): Tom Velasco Jan 27, 2022
    Show notes

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov has been hailed as one of the greatest novels of all time. I just got done reading the book and have been mulling over its multilayered meaning ever since. So I invited my friend Tom Velasco to come on the show to talk about. Tom has read the book at least 10 times (which, at 776 pages is not an easy feat) and has been teaching the book to highschool students at The Ambrose School where he’s been teaching for the last 22 years.

In this lengthy podcast, we talk a lot about the book including its background, characters, plot, and its philosophical and theological themes, especially the problem of evil, free, suffering, and the nature of belief. This leads to many philosophical and cultural tangents which we don’t shy away from.

    S9 Ep940: Being a Christian in Hollywood: Hannah Barefoot Jan 24, 2022
    Show notes

Hannah Barefoot is a theatrically trained actress, singer, and dancer originally from Cody, Wyoming. Her first leading role role in the cult favorite, 'The Falls: Testament of Love,' earned her a reputation as a raw and vulnerable dramatic actress early on, while her work in improv developed her comedic chops. She has since starred in many movies and TV shows including King Richard, CSI, Chicago Med, Creepshow, LA’s Finest, Criminal Minds, Good Girls Revolt, and many others.

As a singer, Hannah is one half of an indie-folk-rock duo, The Luminous Grey, alongside her husband, Andy Barefoot. Their music has been commissioned and featured in feature films, including two of Hannah's films, and she was recently the lead in renowned choreographer Galen Hook's western musical film, 'There Once Was a Woman.'

In this episode, Preston talks with Hannah about what it’s like being a Christian in Hollywood. She takes us behind the scenes and discusses her raw and vulnerable perspective on God, life, acting, Hollywood, and how she understands the art of acting in light of the kingdom of God.

S9 Ep938: Evangelicalism, Eroticism, Trinity, Sexuality, Suffering, and Hope: David Bennett Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

David is from Sydney, Australia where he studied journalism and then international relations. He moved to Oxford to pursue his studies in theology and train as an apologist from a skeptical, atheist background as an anti-Christian gay activist. David now holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in theology from Oxford, a master’s degree in theology from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and is now completing his doctorate (DPhil) in theology at Oxford. He specialises in the relationship between queer theory, asceticism and contemporary Anglican theology, especially ethics, and the role of desire in knowing God. He’s in the process of discerning a call to ordination.

David has recently published his first book, A War of Loves (Zondervan, 2018). It describes his own story from atheistic gay activism to becoming a follower of Jesus, in which he advocates for a positive moral vision of biblical sexuality and discipleship. His other interests include French, Latin, church history and patristics, writing, travel, cooking, reading books, and living in Christian community.

S9 Ep935: Semiotics, Anti-Leadership, and Doing Church from the Table: Dr. Leonard Sweet Jan 06, 2022
    Show notes

Len is a true Renaissance man. Author of more than seventy books and 1500+ published sermons, Leonard Sweet’s recent publications include groundbreaking textbooks on preaching (Giving Blood), evangelism (Nudge), ecclesiology (So Beautiful) and discipleship (I Am A Follower). The second volume in his Christmas trilogy with Lisa Samson is just out (St.As). Len and co-author Lisa Samson are working on volume four (for Dementia and Alzheimers patients) of their “Songs of Light” series. Len often appears on the “50 Most Influential Christians in America” listings, and in 2010 was selected by the top non-English Christian website as one of the “Top 10 Influential World Christians of 2010”. His “Napkin Scribbles” podcasts can be accessed on leonardsweet.com or Spotify.

In this episode, Len unpacks what semiotics is, how we can better read the Bible by paying attention to story and symbolism, why CEO-style church leadership does not resonate with what Jesus said about leadership, and why the table should be the center of our ecclesiological rhythms.
