S9 Ep953: Behind the Scenes of Bible Translation: Dr. Brandon Smith Mar 10, 2022
    Show notes

Dr. Brandon Smith is associate professor of theology at Cedarville University. Previously, he spent the previous four years helping lead the Christian Standard Bible translation and as an elder at a church in the Nashville area. He also helped found the Center for Baptist Renewal and hosts the Church Grammar podcast. His research interests include the Trinity, canonical and theological interpretation, biblical theology, and early church theology (especially AD 100-400). Brandon has a Ph.D. in Theology and New Testament, Ridley College (Melbourne), an M.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies, Criswell College, and a B.A. in Biblical Studies, Dallas Baptist University

In this episode, we discuss translation theory, why certain translations differ, whether translations are relatable, how to pick a translation for you or for your church, we also peak behind the scenes of what goes on into translating the Bible, and we unpack why the Christian Standard Bible is, in our humble opinion, the best all around translation out there.

    S9 Ep950: A Christian View of Immigration: Karen Gonzalez Feb 28, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, I talk to Karen about all things related to immigration. What does the Bible say? How theologically/ethically important is it? How should the biblical story on immigration shape our current Christian imagination when it comes to current political issues about immigration? How should Christians respond to undocumented immigrants?

Karen Gonzalez is a speaker, writer, storyteller, and immigrant advocate, who herself immigrated from Guatemala as a child. Karen is a former public school teacher and attended Fuller Theological Seminary, where she studied theology and missiology. For the last 12 years, she has been a non-profit professional, currently working for World Relief, an organization that serves refugees and other immigrants, as the human resources director. She wrote a book about her own immigration story and some of the immigrants found in the Bible:The God Who Sees: Immigrants, The Bible, and the Journey to Belong (Herald Press, May 2019). She also has bylines inSojourners, Christianity Today, The Christian Century, and others. Karen is currently working on her second book, Beyond Welcome: Centering Immigrants in our Christian Response to Immigration (Brazos Press, October 2022). She is also the co-host of the Latina-focused podcast Cafe with Comadres. You can reach her via her website Karen-Gonzalez.com or on social media at @_karenjgonzalez.

    Show notes

Tom Wright is Research Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Early Christianity at St Mary’s College in the University of St Andrews and Senior Research Fellow at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. In the episode, we talk about many things related to New Testament theology including the meaning of the term “gospel,” understanding Paul’s letters in their historical and biblical context, the importance of resurrection (over the significance of “going to heaven when you die”), the meaning of “hell,” and other personal things about his spiritual and theological journey. We also talk about the polarization in American Christianity and other contemporary issues.

S9 Ep948: A Complementarian Reading of the New Testament: Dr. Tom Schreiner Feb 21, 2022
    Show notes

Complementarians believe that the Bible affirms the full equality of women and men, but that God only allows men to be elders and teachers in local churches. Dr. Tom Schreiner is one of the most well known and widely published (and respected) scholars who holds to this view. In this episode, Tom sums up his position and then responds to several counterarguments I throw at him.

Tom is James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Professor of Biblical Theology (1997) and Associate Dean of the School of Theology. Schreiner joined the Southern faculty in 1997 after serving 11 years on the faculty at Bethel Theological Seminary. He also taught New Testament at Azusa Pacific University. Schreiner, a Pauline scholar, is the author or editor of several books including, Romans, in the Baker Exegetical Commentary Series on the New Testament; Interpreting the Pauline Epistles; The Law and Its Fulfillment: A Pauline Theology of Law; The Race Set Before Us: A Biblical Theology of Perseverance and Assurance; Still Sovereign: Contemporary Perspectives of Election, Foreknowledge, and Grace, co-edited with Bruce A. Ware; Women in the Church: A Fresh Analysis of I Timothy 2:9-15; Paul, Apostle of God’s Glory in Christ: A Pauline Theology.
