    The YES Effect

The YES Effect show features stories and interviews with some of the world’s most successful and inspirational people about how they overcame obstacles, doubts, fears and naysayers to accomplish massive dreams and impact the world. The difference between impossible and possible: saying YES.

Host Shelli Varela is a Story Alchemist, speaker, coach and author, and is no stranger to possibility hacking. Her remarkable journey from 108 pound manicurist to a 30 year career as her city’s first female Firefighter & Captain has been featured everywhere from TEDx, to Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine and a NYT Bestseller.

Shelli has since become obsessed with the power of the mind and in particular, the transformational power of the word YES.

The YES Effect is proof that everything YOU need to succeed and change the world is already inside you.

TYE 155: Focus On The Next Step, Not The Whole Mountain (How I Wrote A Song) Mar 14, 2023

To make a big dream happen, you have to break it into small, individual steps and focus on the next first step. This way, you can make even the wildest, even most absurd, idea a success. This episode is a story about how my 13 year-old step son Ry and I co-created a song with the help of a celebrity music producer, without ever meeting him, and with almost zero musical abilities myself.

I just really wanted to make a song with Ry, and focused on the next first step.

Listen to the end to hear the song itself and a super inspiring Q&A with Ry at the end.

Whatever your big, even absurd, dream is, you don’t need to know exactly how you’re going to achieve it. You just need to know three things: that it’s a “yes,” what the next first step is, and who to ask for help.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How to break success down into small steps
    • How I was able to co-write a song without any musical ability
    • How I sourced my network for help
    • How I ended up working with a celebrity music producer, who has worked with Cher, Tina Turner, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Joe Cocker & Disney
    • How to get more people to say “yes” to your requests
    • Why passion and persistence lead to success
    • How to listen to your body

    Quotables:

“You don’t need to know all the steps. You just need to know: is this a yes, am I excited, and what is the next first thing?”

TYE 154: How to overcome perfectionism and embrace the messy steps to success Jan 30, 2023

Perfectionism is a killer of hopes and dreams. The challenge is learning to accept and embrace the messy, imperfect steps necessary to create momentum. It’s how every successful person gets to the top of the mountain, and why so many people never reach it.

This quick episode is about my holistic approach to doing things the most human way possible: imperfectly. Please listen, share and I hope this lights your fire to keep taking messy, imperfect steps forward to your ultimate “yes!”

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why people often fail at their goals
    • Why New Year's Resolutions often fail
    • The compound effect
    • How successful people manage failure
    • How to overcome perfectionism

    Quotables:

“You can’t get to the top of your mountain unless you’re willing to deal with your own humanity where you’re going to be doing it imperfectly. The question is: are you going to be doing it?”

“It’s always going to be messy and ugly. The only thing that matters is ‘can I keep going?’”

TYE 153: The life-changing power of a small act of kindness Jan 23, 2023

We often never know how far an act of kindness can go or how it can change someone’s day, or their entire life. Here’s a quick story of kindness from a recent trip to the grocery store, which started with something rather unkind.

Too often, people are dismissed and not looked at for the wholeness of who they actually are.

    Everyone has bad days.

    But everyone deserves our kindness.

TYE 152: Say What You Need to Say Before It’s Too Late Jan 16, 2023

This holiday season was a difficult one for me, and in this episode, I explain why & what I learned from it.

In the very days leading up, one of my absolute closest people fell ill and died quite suddenly. I spent Christmas Day in the hospice at her side, spending those final inevitable moments in deep sorrow and reflection. But those moments also reminded me of a valuable life lesson - woven beautifully into one of my favourite John Mayer songs.

Please listen and share with someone who needs to hear it. Death and dying are indeed both heartbreaking and beautiful.

TYE 151: How To Overcome The Fear of Asking Questions (A Personal Story) Dec 28, 2022

At some point we developed this fear of asking questions. For so many people, the thought of potentially hearing “no” is crippling enough to pass up the incredible possibility of “yes.” But as the saying goes, “you’ll never know until you ask,” and not asking at all, ironically, leads to that same dreaded “no” by default. So how do we find the courage to ask questions?

In this episode, I’m sharing two occasions where - scared as I was - I took a shot at asking. One resulted in a business deal with one of the biggest luxury car companies in the world (for a firefighter calendar I was producing), and the other a close friendship with a celebrity musician who accepted my random and totally ridiculous fangirl request for a drum lesson.

I hope these stories inspire you to look past the chance of “no” and envision what your life could look like if simply asking the question brings you a life-changing “yes.”

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How to overcome the fear of asking questions
    • Why you’ll likely hear “yes” more than “no” if you just ask
    • How I landed a sponsorship deal with Lamborghini
    • Why we inevitably forget hearing “no”
    • How I became close friends with former P!nk drummer & speaker, Mark Schulman
    • How to find the courage to ask questions
    • Why we need to normalize asking questions

This conversation was from a candid, behind-the-scenes chat with my producer, but I wanted to share it with you. Let me know your thoughts on this episode and the topic of asking questions. Is there a “yes” out there for you? (contacts below).

TYE 150: How a no-sugar diet can change your life with Netta Gorman Oct 04, 2022

When Netta Gorman stopped eating sugar, it not only changed her life, but also the lives of hundreds of others. She now helps people eliminate sugar through her coaching programs and immensely popular “Life After Sugar” podcast.

But Netta’s journey to the land of no sugar, flour or sweeteners wasn’t easy (as we’ve all tried and mostly failed). But after a lifetime of digestive issues, doctor’s visits and failed efforts, Netta caved to this small but life-changing recommendation of a Nutritional Therapist. Her results were so effective, she’s now dedicated to guiding others past the emotional and societal challenges of a no-sugar diet.

Netta Gorman is on The YES Effect podcast to talk about the challenges and benefits of ditching sugar for good and how she turned her success story into a life of helping others say “yes” to better health and feel free from sugar cravings and mindless snacking.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why sugar and flour cause so many digestive issues
    • Netta’s long and difficult journey to finally eliminating sugar, flour and sweeteners
    • The immediate effects of a no-sugar diet
    • How sugar affects weight, energy level and digestion
    • Why social pressure makes it difficult to stop eating sugar
    • Why eliminating sugar cravings starts with removing your emotional attachment to sugary foods
    • How Netta turned her personal success into a business

    Quotables:

“I couldn’t imagine not doing what I’d always done.”

“If you want something different, you have to do something different.”

“I got hooked on feeling great and that’s what keeps me motivated.”

“Social pressure to consume sugar is strong. When you don’t consume sugar anymore, the social pressure to consume it again is even stronger.”

TYE 149: I wasn’t meant to be the prettiest girl in school Sep 22, 2022

Jealousy and comparison can shatter us. But when we focus on others’ success, money, fame, appearance, situation or whatever, we forget the truth - the truth of our own gifts and the true story of what’s beneath the surface.

I wanted to share this quick story about a girl in my high school - hands down the prettiest and most popular girl in the school. Every fibre in my short, geeky body badly wanted to be her. Turns out, there was so much more to the story, and it made me forever grateful for my own gifts and for being exactly who I be.

I hope this inspires you to focus on your gifts and appreciate exactly where you are on your journey.

Please listen, review and share with someone who needs to hear it too.

    Quotables:

“If you are trying to build a castle, make sure you don’t build it on sand. Build it on something that’s going to last. Build it on something real. Build it on something that is true and authentic to you.”

“There are going to be times when you look at other people and think ‘this is grossly unfair that this is my life and other people get to have that’ but sometimes you can’t see over the fence.”

“If ever you find yourself in a position where you feel like ‘this just sucks, it’s hard and I wish I had that', just keep using and building the tools in your own tool box to get you to the destination you are meant to be.”

TYE 148: How to build positive company culture by learning about your people and their stories Sep 15, 2022

To build a positive company culture, you first need to show that you care about your people. Sounds like a simple concept, right?

Then why does so much toxic company culture still exist? It’s because leaders need to learn more about what drives their people and why, and most importantly, genuinely care.

In today’s episode, I’m going to explain how leaders can build far more successful businesses and create a much more positive work environment using the power of story. The perfect example: how the Wright Brothers won the highly competitive race to invent the airplane by putting people & culture first.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why story is the most underutilized leadership tool
    • How to create a more positive company culture
    • What story actually means when it comes to company culture and employee relationships
    • What currency actually means to your employees (spoiler: it’s not money)
    • The 2 types of story and which is more important
    • Why corporations use story in their marketing
    • How to get more out of your employees
    • How to become a better leader in the workplace

    Quotables:

“Leadership needs to know about story. It’s the most under-utilized tool in the leadership toolbox.”

“When you’re a leader, you’re leading humans. When you learn about story you learn to give a s**t about humans.”

“When we think of currency, we automatically think about money. Money is currency, for sure, but so is pride, so is peace, accomplishment and freedom. So if you;re a leader of a team you need to know what’s going on in the minds of the people you’re leading. What is their currency? You want your team to go through a wall for you? Show them you give a s**t.”

“Nobody cares to understand you unless they first feel understood.”

“Story is a snapshot in time, your perspective of that snapshot and what you make it mean. And it’s the meaning that drives the story.”

TYE 147: How to find your place in the world when you feel lost with Bara Mann Aug 31, 2022

If you’ve ever struggled with finding your true place in the world, Bara Mann’s story will inspire you. Despite a successful career as an engineer, she always felt out of place. After a fluke introduction to meditation and mindfulness, she knew it was time for a change. So took a leap of faith and quit, not knowing what was next. What happened next was pure magic.

Bara is now a Transformational Life Coach and Speaker, specializing in helping people overcome their patterns and limiting beliefs so they can advance confidently in their lives and careers. Bara is on The Yes Effect to talk about how saying “yes” to what your body is telling you will lead you to your true passion and place in the world.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why you should say “yes” to what your body is telling you
    • Why mindfulness and meditation are so effective
    • How to overcome the fear of taking a leap of faith
    • How to balance masculine and feminine energy
    • How meditation can help ADHD and focus
    • How to get to the root of what is causing you anxiety and tension
    • How to find your passion in life
    • Advice for making a big career change

    Quotables:

“The reason meditation is so powerful is because you get quiet enough to hear the truth.”

“Your body doesn’t lie. You don’t need to know exactly what’s going to come next and there’s so much adventure in not knowing. Taking that leap and allowing what will be to be is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. And it’s really fun, too!”

TYE 146: The difference between effort and efforting Aug 15, 2022

Sometimes we try so hard to force an outcome, we lose sight of why we were doing it in the first place. The good news: it’s not about lack of effort. It’s just the wrong kind of effort. In this short episode, I’ll share exactly what to do the next time you’re struggling to accomplish something that is just not happening, no matter how much time and effort you’re putting in. This little change will make all the difference.

Please share this with someone who is struggling toward an outcome. With the right effort, I guarantee it’s only a matter of time.

TYE 145: Stick to your beliefs, despite what everyone else says Aug 08, 2022

I wanted to share this quick story of a moment in grade 5 that changed my life. As kids, we all know how powerful peer pressure can be. It’s much easier (and often safer) to follow what everyone else is doing, rather than speak up - especially when you’re painfully shy and bullied, like I was. And for many of us, this carries into adulthood, too. But here’s what happens when you stand your ground, separate yourself from the crowd and stick to your beliefs.

Please share this podcast with someone you know who needs encouragement to stick to their beliefs, despite what everyone else says.

TYE 144: Don’t kill your magic with logic Aug 01, 2022

Logic can keep us safe, but it can absolutely crush our true essence. Truth is, the people who accomplish the things that light their soul on fire follow their magic, not their logic. Here’s a quick listen to explain why (recorded in a park in Toronto, to please excuse the skateboarding in the background).

Please share this podcast with someone you know who is letting logic get in the way of their true potential. And never be afraid to let your freak flag fly.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why trusting your body is better than trusting your brain
    • How my parents influenced me
    • Why we often say “yes” to things we should say “no” to

    Quote:

“The people who accomplish the things that light their soul on fire follow their magic and not their logic.”

TYE 143: The woman who used my TED Talk as her ringtone Jul 25, 2022

This quick story was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. It’s a moment with a stranger where I truly realized how sharing your story can help others.

An aspiring young female firefighter had tracked me down and asked to meet for coffee. Throughout her training, she had been rewatching this TED Talk I did on becoming a female firefighter.

The day we met in person, her phone rang. That moment, both our lives changed.

There is somebody out there that needs your help. And something small you might take for granted has the power to impact others going through the exact same experiences you did.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How to motivate others as a leader

TYE 142: How to find your truth, tell your story and change someone's life Jul 18, 2022

Everyone has something to give to the world. In this episode I’m going to share 3 things about storytelling and finding your truth that will motivate you to share more of your experiences, gifts and earned wisdom to change people’s lives. And I’m also going to explain why so many people get stuck thinking they don’t have a relevant or inspiring enough story to share. It’s actually the ordinary stories that matter more than the extraordinary ones.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why many women struggle to tell their story
    • Why the loudest person is rarely the wisest
    • How to find your story
    • How to inspire people using your story and your gifts
    • The meaning of your “original medicine”
    • 3 important facts about storytelling
    • The meaning of reciprocity and how to leverage it

    Quotables:

“Nobody cares about the Everest you submitted unless they know about the training and shitty times of waking up at 5am, your fingers are bleeding. That’s where we relate to your story.”

“It’s almost never the loudest person that is the wisest.”

“Your story is not about you. It’s a bridge of possibility for your audience.”

TYE 141: How to deal with grief, loss and continuing bonds with Sarah Wilkes Jul 11, 2022

Sarah Wilkes helped me survive my absolute biggest lifelong fear - the death of my dad. She wasn’t just there for me, she taught me how to see lightness in death, how to accept and navigate grief and how to keep my dad with me long after he was gone.

If you’re grieving the dying or death of a loved one, this will help you see death from a whole new perspective.

Sarah is a Reverend and Spiritual Advisor who has worked in palliative care and emergency services. This was an impromptu conversation recorded in her backyard (please excuse the background noise) and with her blessing, I’m sharing with you on the The YES Effect podcast, because I know Sarah’s humility and incredible wisdom will help guide you through death and grief like it did for me.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How to implement continuing bonds in your life after a loved one dies
    • How life and death are just different time loops which we can reconnect whenever we want
    • Why saying goodbye versus sudden death doesn’t necessarily make things easier
    • How both sudden and prolonged dying each have grace
    • How grief is like paying a debt which has different payment plans and durations
    • Why grief is much like a roadtrip with highs, lows and people who come and go
    • Why we need to recognize the journey of the dying and acknowledge their remaining life
    • Why laughter is just as important as tears when it comes to death
    • How to react to actions and conversations with someone entering the other side
    • Why we make death harder than it needs to be

    Quotables:

“You made death accessible and cool.”

“We’re all stuck in these little time loops and it’s the cognition of us recognizing the immediacy of our loved ones in another frame of time that we can connect with them whenever we choose to.”

“Saying goodbye doesn’t make it easier (sudden death). Each season and each type of death has its grace.”

“Grief is a debt you pay in your own way and in your own time.”

“Death is as safe as life gets.”

“We make it harder than it needs to be.”

TYE 140: From welfare to CEO with The Queen of Social Media, Rachel Pedersen Jun 28, 2022

Rachel Pedersen became known as “The Queen of Social Media” for one main reason: realness. In a universe seemingly dominated by male business gurus, hustle culture, perfection, makeup and filters, Rachel helped open the doors for businesswomen to leverage their no makeup, no filter, sweats-and-slippers authenticity on social media.

And she comes by it honestly.

In less than a decade, Rachel went from single mom living on welfare to founder and CEO of two multimillion-dollar companies, a top social media marketer and consultant, worldwide viral sensation, leading authority on storytelling through social media. She also shares openly about living with depression.

Rachel’s new book “Unfiltered: Proven Strategies to Start and Grow Your Business by Not Following the Rules” is a literal piece of art. If you follow it, it gives you permission to be exactly who you are and I guarantee it will be your rocket fuel.

Rachel Pedersen is on The YES Effect show to talk about fearlessly going for it, starting a business from the bottom and finding your version of success by ignoring everyone else’s rules.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Rachel’s journey of single mom on welfare to starting a business
    • How bravery and handling pressure is what elevates successful people
    • How to act on your dreams and start taking action steps - even from zero
    • Why the small, “crappy” steps of entrepreneurship are important for success
    • How Rachel found success differently from most business media gurus
    • The moment Rachel decided to go from ‘talking about hashtags to changing the world’
    • How an emotional livestream of Rachel talking about depression went viral
    • Why many women still struggle to be truly authentic publicly
    • Why more influencers and celebrities are doing “no makeup” social media posts
    • How Rachel helped grow a company 6700% in less than a year
    • Why ClickFunnels Founder Russel Brunson encouraged her to write a book
    • The importance of knowing when to speed up and slow down in your business

    Quotables:

“There was a part of me saying ‘you’ve come so far, let’s not stop here. What’s the worst that can happen? Let’s try for it.’”

“It’s one crappy step at a time. It’s one crappy TikTok that’s sharing my voice…done. Ugh. Then the next crappy action step. Not that the action steps are crappy, but when we first do them it doesn’t feel revolutionary. I didn’t realize that’s a part of the ‘how’.”

“You change what society gets to see. You change what becomes normal for the little girl who maybe doesn’t look a certain way.” -SV

“So many people are suffering in silence and silos.” -SV

“When you are willing to say ‘I’m going to do something different’ and are willing to stand out and take the heat and pressure of that, all of us are together in a different category because it takes so much bravery.”

“Usually the things we’ve been criticized the most for are actually your rocket fuel.”

“You get to be in charge of exactly what you want to build. This is not a runaway train. You're the conductor and you get to decide how fast or slow you need to go and when you need to stop.”

TYE 139: Behind-the-scenes live coaching call: turing a horrific story into an inspiring speech Jun 20, 2022

Mindy Schulz survived a parent’s worst nightmare. Now, she is turning her horrific story into an inspiring presentation. She recently called me for some advice and tips on public speaking and how to properly tell her story for an audience. With her blessing, I recorded our coaching call and am offering it to you - raw and uncut - in this podcast.

    Mindy’s backstory:

In 2016, Mindy was walking her 5 month-old son Tristan when they were hit at a crosswalk by a distracted driver. Tristan was killed instantly by the impact. Mindy was badly injured. During this coaching call, Mindy explains the unthinkable grief, guilt and pain that felt following the event. But she also explains why she’s now eager to use her experience for the betterment of others.

It was a very emotional call, as we dug into the details of the event and precisely how this story can be told to engage and impact an audience. “Wow, thank you. Now I feel far more empowered. I feel more at ease. This feels more natural to me which gives me a lot more confidence and assurance. I feel like it’s a natural extension of me now instead of forcing myself into a box.”

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • The 3 objectives of a speech: what you want the audience to think, feel and do
    • Why a public speaker needs to convey their authority on a subject
    • What kept Mindy going when she was at her absolute lowest
    • What motivated Mindy to want to share her story publicly
    • The correct emotions that will move an audience, and which ones not to use in a speech
    • The 4 factors of influence: authority, social proof, consistency & reciprocity
    • How writing a speech is different than writing a book
    • How to properly begin a speech
    • The method I use to “memorize” a speech
    • Why Mindy originally chose to “soften” the details of the story, and why I advised her not to
    • How to use “The Bounce” in a talk to directly speak to your audience during a story
    • How I use graphics and pictures to memorize a talk

    Quotables:

“In the fear there’s something beautiful.”

“I’ve done scary things before and I’ve done it by surrendering to the process and moment by moment trying to be grounded in what it is I’m supposed to learn.”

“So many people will think they don’t have the ability to be courageous because they’re still feeling the fear.”

“You’re not writing a book or a story. You’re reliving and unpacking a moment with us.”

“You can not be wrong telling your story. I know you have the courage and bravery to share it in a way that’s going to be life-changing for the audience.”

“I want them to crack open enough so they can love themselves just a little bit more at the end of the day.”

“Raise your vibration. When you’re coming from a place of gratitude, love and appreciation, it changes the energy you send out into the world and controls the reality you’re going to receive.”

TYE 135: Google X Co-founder Tom Chi on how to think like an inventor May 10, 2022

Tom Chi’s list of accolades - much like his work - stretches from here to outer space: Co-founder of Google X where he helped develop Google Glass & self-driving cars, he’s launched things into space, built award-winning robots, worked on the development of Microsoft Outlook and Yahoo Search, has released over 20 albums as a musician, and even released a comic strip. He began his career at 15 as an astrophysical researcher…immediately after getting rejected for a job at Burger King.

Tom has pioneered a unique approach to rapid prototyping and now speaks and teaches the fundamentals of learning versus knowing, related to how inventors and creators think. He’s literally the best speaker I’ve ever heard and you’re about to hear why!

After 5 years of trying, I’m thrilled to finally interview Tom Chi on The YES Effect show.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why Tom was given the name “Tom” in grade one, because he didn’t actually know his name after his parents immigrated from Taiwan.
    • Why Tom believes school doesn’t necessarily teach practical thinking
    • The inventor mindset Tom Chi developed as a child
    • The difference between practical thinking and abstract thinking
    • Why knowing things as a noun prevents us from noticing and learning their nuances
    • How Tom uses a fork to explain how things are nuanced
    • How Tom uses rapid prototyping to help people problem solve
    • Why our brains struggle to know and learn at the same time
    • How we’re able to learn more as a child than as an adult
    • Why our culture of determining winners and losers prevents us from pursuing genius
    • Why getting stuck in a perception usually means that perception is wrong
    • How creators and inventors think
    • How the joy of learning creates an environment to invent and create

    Quotables:

“Part of the reason people don’t invent things and create things is they very quickly come to judgment on what things are.”

“We get so allied with abstract concepts and ideologies that we stop noticing what the actual world is like.”

“If your perception is stuck for a long time, it’s probably not a correct perception because everything in the universe is in some process of change.”

“If you think about the way a kid learns, there isn’t a lot of justification required before they try something new.”

“Anybody learning anything is going to be bad at it for a while. We take something that’s a natural part of the learning process and heighten it into some kind of problem.”

“What I’m trying to do in my work is dig into what types of cognition serve us and allow us to continue to learn and create a great education for ourselves. Not in the ‘I went to Harvard and got a 4.0’ kind of thing. But the ways of thinking that allow us to invent, create and how to be in the world.”

TYE 133: How to use storytelling to sell with Pat Quinn Apr 28, 2022

Whether you’re a billionaire entrepreneur or the neighbourhood plumber, Pat Quinn will show you how to use your story to teach, sell and make an impact. He is one of the world's premier presentation coaches who has worked with Olympians, astronauts, New York Times bestselling authors, world-class business leaders like Grant Cardone, Tony Robbins, Shark Tank’s Daymond John, Dean Graziosi, and everyday business owners. His goal is not to get you a standing ovation - it’s to use storytelling to make sales.

He is also the founder of StoryLinq.com - a digital platform for storing, building and categorizing your stories to easily assemble into presentations.

He’s on The YES Effect to talk about how he coaches people to create the perfect presentation to get people’s attention, acquire customers, make sales, grow your revenue and ultimately create impact in the world.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How Pat transitioned from a career as a magician to coaching world class speakers and presenters
    • Why focusing more on the audience than yourself will make you a better speaker
    • Why Pat believes speaking and presenting is the fastest way to grow a business and make impact
    • Why laughter and applause are not the most important part of a presentation
    • Why you shouldn’t open a presentation with your most extraordinary or emotional story
    • When to tell you most extraordinary and emotional stories in a presentation
    • Which kind of story to begin any presentation with
    • The main goal of public speaking or giving a presentation
    • The two types of audiences and how to convert each into a sale or action
    • How speaking is the only customer acquisition tool that you can get paid for

    Quotables:

“You’ll learn more by watching the audience for 5 minutes than you will watching yourself for 45 minutes.”

“Your goal isn’t to be the smartest person in the room. Your goal is to help solve one problem.”

“The one thing standing between you and being an influence, having a voice, getting customers and making impact is having your stories put together in a way that moves other people to take action.”

“Speaking on stage or online is the only customer acquisition model that is not only free, but if you do it well, you get paid for it.”

“When you switch the model from one-to-one to one-to-many, your business just scales differently; your impact grows exponentially and it’s the most cost-effective, risk free way to grow your revenue.”

“The person who gets up on stage instantly gets credibility, has an audience and has a voice.”

“If you don’t have a way to store your stories you’re letting your most valuable assets and treasures blow away in the wind.”

“Everybody who is going to use stories to sell, grow their business and impact the lives of other people should have a way to keep track of their stories.”

“Most of the people I work with are business owners, coaches and entrepreneurs who want to attract new clients, grow their business and have a greater impact on the world. And I believe having a perfect presentation - a talk that introduces yourself to new people - is the fastest way to do that.”

TYE 132: How to begin healing from trauma with Haumea Hanakahi Apr 20, 2022

Haumea Hanakahi sees things that most of us don’t. A highly gifted psychic, mystic, intuitive wisdom guide, zapper of energy blocks and storyteller, she uses her gifts to help people heal from trauma. She spent nearly 30 years studying and learning how energy flows through our bodies and how to unblock it when it gets stuck, as in the case of trauma.

She’s on The YES Effect to talk about how she works to bring forth tips and tricks for highly sensitive people living in a world not designed for them. If you are a highly sensitive person or empath, Haumea offers understanding, insights, tools, and clearings to assist in boldly expressing and living your unique Divine Design.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How Haumea Hanakahi went from a mostly non-verbal childhood to a healer
    • Why trauma is often rooted in past generations, chronic illness, money, past lives, lies and conditioning
    • What Haumea learned after 30 years of studying how energy flows through our bodies
    • How Haumea works to remove the energy blocks that show up as trauma
    • What immediately happens when a trauma is released
    • Why we have to get out of our head and into our body to heal from trauma
    • The story of a teenager who had an immediate reaction to Haumea’s healing

    Quotables:

“Trauma is a big word. Many people describe trauma as the stories - what they went through, actions and feelings. I describe it as a stuck energy in the body.”

“Once a trauma block is released, it gives the body space so our innate healing abilities can come on board.”

“When we stay in our head, that’s the easiest place to get confused, manipulated and feel confused. The more we’re in our body, we have the filter of our heart to filter that’s true and not true.”

TYE 131: How to be a better public speaker with Gail Larsen Apr 11, 2022

Gail Larsen teaches some of the world’s best speakers to be better public speakers. People like Marie Forleo and Danielle Laporte have turned to Gail - someone who was once terrified of public speaking herself. Asked to speak in front of the US President, she found an intuitive way to get over her own fear of public speaking and now teaches it to others. It goes past the technical skills of public speaking and digs into your deepest story so you can tell it in a way that inspires, teaches and puts you, the speaker, completely in your “Home Zone.”

Gail was my public speaking teacher, too. She’s on The YES Effect to talk about how she trains world-class speakers to make an impact on their audiences through authenticity, self-discovery and practice.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How a telegram from the President of the United States thrust Gail into learning to be a public speaker
    • Why Gail’s method of teaching public speaking is different than most training programs
    • How Gail has woven Indigenous wisdom into her coaching
    • Why so many people can easily speak one-on-one but are terrified of public speaking
    • Some of the exercises she uses to coach speakers
    • How she coaches speakers to become better storytellers
    • The mistake of focusing on what your audience wants instead of what you provide

    Quotables:

“Every speaking program tried to get me into technique instead of essence. I think all of us are pretty bored with technique.”

“Everything I do now is based on Indigineus wisdom that takes us back to our truth instead of looking for the next big thing.”

“Most of us are good communicators one-on-one. There’s something about public speaking that makes us think we need to be someone else.”

“If we’re looking to someone else for how we’re supposed to be instead of the truth of who we are, we’ll never get there.”

“When you heal the storyteller you get to tell a better story.” -SV

“The world is asking so much of us now. I don't want any speaker to leave a platform without talking about ‘what’s the new story?’ Because we need to be living into a new story right now.”

“If you’re trying to figure out what they want instead of what we bring, you’ll never have a sustainable speaking career.”

She is the Founder of Levin Life Coach Academy, offering in-depth coaching, training and certification programs designed to support students to make themselves a priority by setting boundaries that stick. Nancy Levin is on The YES Effect show to talk about how people can strengthen their relationships and their own self by finally putting themselves first.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why so many people think boundaries and selfishness are bad things
    • Why projecting the image of “perfection” is so harmful
    • Why Nancy believes the “rocking of her foundation” was the best thing to have happened to her
    • Why so many people wait until it’s too late to make a life-altering change
    • Why we shouldn’t aim for a relationship that’s in “perfect harmony”
    • Why boundaries are actually much more freeing rather than restrictive
    • The reason people (especially women) say yes to things we should say no to
    • How to avoid immediately saying “yes” in order to people please
    • Why being “selfish” can be good and healthy for you
    • How you can confidently put your needs first using one small step next time someone asks you what to have for dinner
    • How Nancy eventually became comfortable telling her affair story

    Quotables:

“We have this idea that the goal of a relationship is harmony at all costs. I’m here to tell you that harmony at all costs comes at a high cost.”

“There’s an epidemic of women and girls saying yes to things they should be saying no to and no to things they should be saying yes to.”

“Most people look at boundaries as being restrictive or depriving. I look at boundaries as the way we are carefully choosing and consciously curating the content of our own lives.”

“Culture has given ‘selfish’ a bad wrap; we pride ourselves on being ‘selfless.’ With selflessness, it’s right there in the word, we disappear.”

“I often look as selfish, self care & self love as being 3 sisters whose job it is to support us in honouring ourselves.”

“My transformation equation: Change = vision + choice + action.”

“On the way to becoming, it’s reintegrating qualities in ourselves that we have disowned and projected onto others, including the light and positive qualities we can step into.”

TYE 128: P!nk bassist Eva Gardner on rock stardom and overcoming rejection Mar 22, 2022

Eva Gardner could have easily been given a golden ticket to music stardom. But the fact that she wasn’t drove her to go get it on her own. Eva grew up in a rock and roll family as the daughter of Kim Gardner, a notable bass player in the 1960’s British Invasion music scene who played with acts like The Creation, Ron Wood, The Birds, Eric Clapton and Rod Stewart. But while Eva found great influence in her father’s career path, she wasn’t immediately encouraged to follow.

It wasn’t until a holiday to visit a family friend, The Who’s John Entwistle, where that all changed. Eva went on to study music at UCLA before beginning a career as a professional touring musician with acts like The Mars Volta, P!nk, Gwen Stefani, Cher, Tegan & Sara, Moby and Veruca Salt.

She’s on The YES Effect Show to talk about her journey from growing up in a rock and roll household, making a name for herself as a bassist, to breaking norms as a female musician in the male-dominated music industry.

    • Why Eva’s dad Kim initially didn’t encourage her to pursue being a bass player
    • How The Who bassist John Entwistle influenced Eva to start playing bass guitar
    • What Eva learned after failing her music school audition, and what she did to improve
    • Why you should surround yourself with people whose skills are are better than yours
    • How the initial rejection from her dad inspired Eva to pursue a career as a musician
    • How Eva got a job as P!nk’s bassist
    • Eva’s most memorable moment playing on stage with P!nk
    • The one thing everyone should do to find clarity on their path

    Quotables:

“It’s those NOs that made me want to turn them into YESes even more.”

“The path isn’t always clear at first…until you take the first step.”

“When you’re with people who are bettering you it really makes you step up.”

“Someone asked me ‘why do I do what I do?’ Ultimately it’s about connecting with other people.”

“I feel like if it was handed to me I probably wouldn’t have wanted it. I probably would have taken it for granted.”

TYE 126: PODCLASS "The Art of the Interview" with NHL legend, Grant Fuhr and 10 y/o Sam Mar 14, 2022

Ever wondered how to properly conduct a podcast interview? Here, you’re gonna hear a 10 year-old do it! My boy Sam is a huge hockey fan, and was curious to learn about how I do my weekly podcast. So I thought this would be a killer learning opportunity. So we reached out to one his favourite players of all time, Stanley Cup Champion and Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee, Grant Fuhr, for an interview. He graciously accepted.

In this episode, I walk you through the 5 components of conducting an interview I taught Sam:

What do you want to share & why?

    Give context to your questions

    Have safety questions ready

    Listen actively

    Prepare a parting statement

This episode includes my full tutorial, including this visual aid I sketched to help guide the interview, followed by video of Sam’s entire interview with Grant Fuhr. To say I’m ridiculously proud of this kid is an understatement. If a 10 year-old can do a great interview with a high profile guest, so can you. Grab a notebook and let’s do this!

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How to find the real story beneath the story
    • How to establish the direction of the interview and control its outcome
    • Why in a good interview, sometimes even the guest learns something about themselves
    • Tips for getting questions answered the way you want
    • Why an interview host needs to have empathy for their guest
    • How to create a comfortable scenario for your guest
    • What to do if your interview goes off track
    • Why I use visual art to help me with my interviews

TYE 125: Helping students reconnect and interact with Joe Beckman Mar 10, 2022

Joe Beckman is a school speaker on a mission to reclaim human connection from our increasingly tech-consumed world. He’s spoken at over 1000 schools and developed resources to help students, teachers and parents rediscover the lost, vital component of human connection. His infectious enthusiasm, storytelling ability and vulnerability has positively impacted over 1 million people worldwide.

He’s also one of the best speakers I’ve ever seen (I finished a distant runner-up to Joe at a speaking contest once).

He’s written a book called “Just Look Up - 5 life-saving phrases every human needs to hear” for educators, teachers, parents and administrators. He’s on The YES Effect show to talk about his optimism that our screen-obsessed world can indeed be encouraged to remember the importance of human connection for growth, prosperity and health.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How Joe gets kids to smile, laugh and engage at his school speaking engagements
    • How he developed a “Netflix for social-emotional learning” video resource
    • Why human connection is so important for students to have in their lives
    • The devastating problems that result without human connection
    • How Joe parlayed a theatre background into helping students and teachers
    • Why we should be talking openly about the times we screw up
    • Why the health implications of screen time mirror those of smoking
    • Why Joe is so hopeful that the world might slowly wean itself off screens in the future

    Quotables:

“It’s imperative we remind ourselves where the juice in life is and that’s in relationships.”

“Any experience you get looking down at a screen vs looking up and being with and around people that you love and help you grow…that can only be done without a screen and in real time with human beings.”

“Continue to pursue the things that fire you up and give passion in your heart. When you can, it makes you a better person, parent, spouse, partner and human.”

TYE 124: What I learned from getting bullied at school Mar 05, 2022

This is my true story of the day I got beat up at my new school - a day that changed my life. I felt completely invisible, unheard and unseen by my teacher and peers. It also inspired my life’s mission: to remind others that your story matters, and you can use it to serve your audience, follow your true passion and build your business.

This clip is from a keynote speech I gave at an event called “Tribe Live” hosted by Stu McLaren. It’s the first time I’d ever shared this story publicly. Most of my talks are about how I became my city’s first female firefighter, but this story hit this audience harder than any I’ve ever given. It includes references to the story of Nancy Case, founder of Taffy2You, Dentist Em Courtney, and a fateful encounter with a truck driver.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • The most important phrase in storytelling
    • The 3 objections people have to using their story to serve & sell
    • That everyone has a story - even when you think you don’t
    • Why more people care about your story than you think
    • How I held myself accountable to a challenge I felt uncomfortable with
    • 3 quick tips to telling your own story
    • The most important thing to remember if you feel imposter syndrome
    • Why the quietest people are your most important audience
    • How a chance encounter with a moving truck driver in my neighbourhood proved that more people are listening to you than you realize

    Quotables:

“A well told story serves. A well told story spreads. A well-told story sells.”

“Most amazing stories are based on one key phrase: ‘And then I realized…’”

    “Everybody has a story.”

“Your humanity is so much more important than your perfection or your expertise.”

    “Press the damn button.”

“If people can’ t feel you, people won’t follow you.”

“Are we saying something that’s safe or something that’s true?” Because honesty is not the same as being boldly truthful.”

“The people listening quietly in the background are the people who need to hear it the most.”

Annie Franceschi landed her lifelong dream job as a writer at Disney…then quit. Despite the career being everything she envisioned it would be, something major was missing. That leap inspired her bestselling book “Permission To Try: 11 Things You Need to Hear When You're Scared to Change Your Life.”

TYE 122: A 25-time winner of “the toughest 2 minutes in sports” on visualization and athlete mindset with Amber Bowman Feb 22, 2022

Amber Bowman is a 25-time Champion of the Firefighter Combat Challenge and was named ·Fitness Trainer of the Year· by the Dr. Oz Show. She possesses the kind of athlete mindset and training regimen akin to sport·s biggest mainstream superstars. And it was all sparked by being told she wasn·t allowed to play alongside the boys. An elite-level hockey player growing up, she was denied the chance to play alongside boys of the same caliber. She credits that discrimination and rejection for helping fuel a commitment and work ethic that not only propelled her world championships, but to eventually teaching her male cohorts. But perhaps her most remarkable feat was returning from a catastrophic head injury to not only compete and win, but break a record once thought unbreakable by a woman. She joins The YES Effect show to discuss how hyper-focused visualization and practice led to her extraordinary success and broke barriers for other female firefighters.

TYE 121: An emotional behind-the-scenes conversation with my producer Feb 17, 2022

Actual audio from a conversation I just had with my producer, Adam. There's tears and swearing, yes. Why am I letting the world hear it? Cause it's directed at you - in the most beautiful and honest way.

When I think about all the people - particularly women - who have their biggest and wildest goals suffocated by a million grains of sand that say "you're the underdog" or "it's never been done" or "it's impossible for me"...it crushes my soul.

That's why I launched this podcast - to showcase the success stories of people who tuned all of that out and said "YES!" Entrepreneurs, change-makers, business women, innovators and people like firefighter Cassandra Chyz, whose remarkable story I featured in Episode #115 "What a 21 y/o female firefighter can teach you about possibility" (who I referenced in this clip).

This short clip is as raw and real as I can be when I explain the purpose of this podcast. Every week, I interview someone who did the thing because of one simple reason: they believed.

They said "yes" and so can you.

TYE 119: The only thing stopping you from achieving your goals Feb 10, 2022

There’s only ONE thing stopping you from achieving the goals and dreams you truly want to achieve: your beliefs. If we resign to “I’m not capable” or “it’s never been done” then we let our perception win. But a belief can’t stop you. Period. A belief in a limitation is more powerful than the limitation itself.

It’s exactly how mathematician George Dantzig ended up solving the “unsolvable” math problem: he was late to a college lecture and mistakenly took an example of a problem that had never been solved for a homework assignment (full story in this episode). The story inspired a scene in the Academy Award-winning movie Good WIll Hunting and has become a famous example of the power of positive thinking and what one can accomplish when they’re unaware of what’s been labeled “impossible” by others.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why we unconsciously talk ourselves out of things
    • The first thing you should do when you find yourself trapped with a limiting belief
    • The difference between people who achieve dreams and those who wish they did (it’s nothing personal)
    • The best thing to do when you stumble or get stuck on your journey

He's someone who has learned the art of using writing - funny or not - to go inside people·s lives and share their journeys in a way that touches others.

Here, he joins The YES Effect podcast with Shelli Varela with advice on how to land big opportunities and how you can find inspiration from just about anything - even being a volunteer firefighter (which he is).

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How Tom got a job as a writer for The Simpsons
    • How saying “no” is a truly powerful way to, in fact, say “yes”
    • Why so many people fail to bring great ideas to life (hint: start telling people)
    • Why being nervous to put yourself out there is actually a good thing
    • A big lesson he learned as a standup comedian: people really don’t care about you…and that’s to your advantage.

TYE 112: How discovering your purpose can change the world with Amy McLaren Jan 02, 2022

Amy McLaren has found her purpose - and is now inspiring others to discover theirs. She’s an entrepreneur, author and Founder of Village Impact a charity that builds schools in rural Kenya. Her passion for education, world travel and mobilizing people has helped thousands of children in some of the world’s most impoverished areas get an education and create opportunity.

But Amy’s own path to purpose wasn’t a direct route. In this episode, Amy digs deep into her personal journey from unfulfilled school teacher to running a global charity. The lessons learned formed the basis for her new book Passion to Purpose - a seven-step journey to shed self-doubt, find inspiration, and change your life (and the world) for the better. And while she admits there isn’t just one cookie-cutter template to start a business or non-profit, her story is a beautiful example of how saying YES to your passion can lead you to your true purpose and ultimately change lives around the world.

In this episode, you will learn:

-The TV episode that ignited Amy’s soul search

-The simple way Village Impact has raised huge amounts of money with zero advertising

-How a chance encounter with a child selling bracelets on the street in Africa led him to a fully funded education - right through graduation.

TYE 103: The Power of Embracing Your Authentic Self with Blake Fly Sep 25, 2020

Somewhere along the way, so many of us have felt forced into boxes at school or at work. But how do we break free, carve out our niche in life, and thrive along the way? This is what we’re talking about with Blake Fly on today’s episode of The YES Effect Show!

Blake is one of my biggest influences. He helps artists, creatives, entrepreneurs, and other people with a message and an idea. When someone wants to share a speech, present a program, cultivate an online presence, build a community, or lead a mastermind, they can turn to Blake to learn how to impact more people, make more money, and fuel their own families, goals, and dreams.

Blake wasn’t the most popular kid in school, but he learned early on how to cultivate his unique abilities, find his people, and master the art of speaking. As he sees it now, whether he’s delivering keynotes all over the world or creating Zoom events to empower entrepreneurs, nothing about his work has changed since high school - he simply does it at a much larger scale.

I want to remind you that your story matters. Not just the story that you put out into the world, but the internal story about what we believe is possible for ourselves. If you want to know more about creating your powerful story that can change your life, 10X your business and make selling simple, join us in the Facebook Group Nice Girls Makes Sales. That is where the magic happens!

    IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN:

    • How writing and delivering a 30-minute valedictory event in high school made Blake fall in love with the process of looking back on experiences, telling unique stories, and finding the universal within them.
    • The tools and techniques Blake uses to humanize the experience of being.
    • How to conquer your fear of the stage, make your message about your audience, and give them the gift of emotional emancipation.
    • How Blake teaches people how to show up - and his advice for people who aren't fully expressing themselves.
    • What Blake learned from his challenge to produce a live video every single day in 2020.
    • Blake’s vision for his Thank You event to span upwards of 50 years - and why it’s never been more important to take stock of the people in our lives and express gratitude.

TYE 078: How filmmaker Sarah Arlen Proved the Skeptics Wrong Mar 19, 2018

When today’s guest was a budding filmmaker and expectant mom, somebody looked down at her pregnant belly and advised her there was no way she could be a successful filmmaker once she had a baby. But she’s not one to lie down when the going gets rough, and in fact, she made it her mission to prove them wrong. Today I’m super stoked to introduce you to the independent filmmaker of the movie, Twice. Her name is Sarah Arlen, and this is The YES Effect Show!

Sarah Arlen was born behind the grocery store of a small town in California. Having fallen in love with cinema when she was little, she studied acting at UC Berkeley before moving to Paris to get her Master’s in filmmaking and to eat cheese. She won the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship and made short films before making a human baby. After winning some screenwriting awards, she was told by producers that she could never made a feature film as a mom. That’s when Sarah decided to become a producer. She overcame postpartum depression by realizing her dream: producing and directing her first feature film, called TWICE, and doing it completely independently. By creating a schedule around her son’s school day, and starting out with the resources she had around her, then crowdfunding and finding donation money to complete her movie, Sarah is now carving out a unique new way for filmmakers to bring their work directly to audiences without passing through gatekeepers. One of her biggest dreams, to help other artists and entrepreneurs make their passion projects, is now coming true as Sarah launches her new in-depth online class, MakeTwice.

As many of you know, I still serve as an active duty fire captain and every now and then, we get a call that just rocks us a little bit. A couple of years ago, we attended one that originally came in as smoke in the building, but it quickly escalated to a commercial property explosion, subsequently burying firefighters under a wall of cinder blocks. One of those firefighters was Tim Casarin, and a crew of firefighters and team of paramedics dug him from the rubble. They saved Tim’s life on scene and proceeded to rush him to the hospital, where he suffered 41 injuries including a broken neck, shattered pelvis and femur, collapsed lung and countless internal injuries.

Tim wasn’t expected to survive, and then he wasn’t expected to walk, but he proved everybody wrong and he’s been dubbed “The Miracle Man.” I’m proud to call him a friend, a co-worker and a hero.

TYE 032: Hero in the Mirror with Kyree Oliver Dec 12, 2016

Have you ever felt like life just happened to you without your consent? Kyree Oliver found himself thinking this exact thought about two years ago. He was in his dorm room at college, thinking about the physical, mental, and emotional abuse he underwent in the previous five months of his life. He felt as though he had lost all control over his life and that he was simply life’s punching bag. Kyree needed a hero to save him but the people closest to him at the time, his teammates, were the people putting him through the abuse. He realized that if anybody was going to save him it HAD to be himself. He realized that he needed to build himself up so that one day he could look in the mirror and honestly say, “I did it… I pulled it together and saved myself” he let life happen to him up to that point, but from then on he became the author of his own life’s story. He became the Hero in the Mirror.

TYE 020: What If It Was Your Last Year To Live? with Traver Boehm Sep 05, 2016

Traver Boehm is an author, speaker, and transformational coach currently practicing intentional homelessness. When Traver was a child he wanted to be a ninja – that was all. Swimming and playing water polo for Boston College, while earning a B.A. in Asian Philosophy, led to a Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Yo-San University and a career in Mixed Martial Arts. Opening CrossFit Pacific Coast in 2009 brought him to beautiful Santa Barbara.

With avid travelers for parents and employers, Traver has been fortunate to bounce around the globe and see the world from many different perspectives. He’s been kicked and spit on in subways for being a Gaijin living in Tokyo as a youngster, laughed with Indian porters while sharing cheap wine and travelling across India, and protected billionaires living on luxury yachts throughout the Caribbean. He’s surfed through Central America, fought Muay Thai in Thailand, and doesn’t ever plan to stop exploring this world of ours.

Traver’s latest venture –The Year to Live Project – will encompass the entirety of 2016 and seeks to tackle the personal question, “What would you do if it were your last year alive?” The project has led him to volunteering in a hospice in Santa Fe, sitting in meditative silence and isolation while in complete darkness for 28 straight days in Guatamala, and will next take him to the woods of Utah to survive with only a knife, a poncho, and a water bottle as tools. His first book, named after the project, is due out in 2017.

When not speaking, or teaching meditation or self-defense, he’s often found chewing on his thumbnail while staring at his computer, obsessing over a word choice. Traver consults with clients from around the globe, assisting them in vastly improving the quality of their lives.
