Day to Day as a Long-term Traveler with Shalini Kulkarni Feb 01, 2018
    Show notes

This week we catch up with our intern Shalini Kulkarni, who has been on the road backpacking in South America since July of 2017. Shalini knew she wanted to do a longer term trip since graduating university, and decided the time was right when she finished paying off her student loan after working for a few years. Paring down an initially ambitious travel plan, Shalini landed in Cartagena and has been having a great time learning the travel ropes (and Spanish!) and getting comfortable in South America, allowing some of the initial cautiousness she arrived with to relax.

Working for a few years before taking off has allowed Shalini to put some of her trip saving towards developing new hobbies, like a new love for trekking in Peru which has led to her visiting some great lesser known places like the Inca site of Choquequirao and the Guaviare region in Colombia. In addition, Shalini took some measures before the trip that allowed her to save a little extra like downsizing her apartment and getting an travel points credit card which is now allowing her to fly to Asia for only the taxes. On this episode we talk to Shalini about some of the other things she did to budget for her trip before she left, how her travel expectations have lived up to the reality of her day to day travel, some of her trip highlights so far and more.

Capturing Moments and Giving Back with Jen Loong of Wandersnap Jan 25, 2018
    Show notes

Jen Loong is the creator of the Wandersnap, an online service that allows people in a location to connect with local photographers for everyday and event photos. She traveled a lot with her family growing up, which helped fuel her love for travel and led her to accepting a job in Shanghai soon after she graduated from university. After some initial culture shock, Jen grew to love her new home and made it a priority to visit as much of China and Asia as she could.

After working for a few major North American companies and an experience on a photography project in Nepal, Jen realized she wanted to pursue a career path where she was able to make more of an impact, which led her to start Wandersnap. She and her team developed the service always keeping people in mind, and pride themselves on prioritizing usability for the client and bringing creative jobs to people who may otherwise not have the opportunity to pursue them, as well as helping to provide vocational training for these individuals.

On this episode we talk about Jen's experience moving to Shanghai, some of the more unique experiences she's had in Asia (like running a marathon in North Korea!), how she started Wandersnap and the mission and values that drive the company as it expands through Asia.

Travel Careers and Couriers: A Conversation with Jared Schwitzke of Airmule Jan 21, 2018
    Show notes

Happy 2018! We're starting the new year with a travel entrepreneurship series, and this week we sat down with Jared Schwitzke who is the marketing manager of Airmule. It's a great travel startup that allows passengers traveling between the US and China to make some money on their flight by "selling" their available baggage allowance. In addition to how the service works and how to sign up, we talk to Jared about the logistics of how passengers pick up and drop off their cargo, and how the company ensures its passengers safety by vetting the company and cargo to be shipped, the demographics of the types of passengers they find use their service.

Jared was inspired to join Airmule on deciding he wanted to embark on a more travel-oriented career path after taking his first trip outside the United States, a few years after joining the work force our of college. The trip caused Jared to realize he didn't like his job or the traditional career path he was headed down, and that he wanted to live a life where travel could continue to be a priority. On this episode, we talk to Jared about the kinds of experiences that led him to these realizations and inspired him to reshape his career track, the importance of making these changes while you're young, and the sense of fulfillment he now gets from a job that allows him to help other people travel.

Balancing Work With Travel Nov 30, 2017
    Show notes

Like our travel style, our workload has been evolving throughout the years, and we've had different levels of work-based responsibilities during the long term trips we've taken. During our last trip to Asia, we experimented with different working styles (e.g. coworking spaces and working from home) and time spent in one place and noticed the effect on our productivity. We noticed (unsurprisingly!) that we seemed to get the most done when we were based out of one place for a while, and took this into account over the summer when we were planning our trip to Mexico, as our workloads have recently increased.

Since we decided we liked Mexico City for our workspace, apartment and culture, we've signed a six month lease that we feel will allow us to develop some great structure and routine around our schedule which will help us to stay productive and accomplish our work goals. That said, we are still excited about being in our new environment and are prioritizing getting out to explore the surrounding areas over the weekend or during downtime, and we love the fact that knowing we'll be staying for six months takes the pressure off of seeing and doing everything right away. With lots of time to plan and visit, we'll be able to travel to these places when the time is right and not feel like we have to sacrifice our focus on work!

On this episode we talk about our experiences with finding a good work/travel balance while we've been on the road, and how we found we do better when we settle down in one place for a while. We talk about why we choose to travel since we have the opportunity to work remotely as opposed to working in Canada, how we still prioritize exploring the area we are living in, and our thoughts on Mexico City being a great option for Digital Nomads.

From the Rut to the Ledge: A Conversation with Suzanne Rutledge Nov 09, 2017
    Show notes

Suzanne Rutledge and her husband Mitch have always loved international travel, and continued to make it a priority after they had their son Luke. In 2014, during a trip to Chile to celebrate their 40th birthdays, Suzanne and Mitch met a solo female traveler who had been traveling around the world for a year. Inspired by the conversation and her travel stories, Mitch and Suzanne set about planning a long-term adventure for their own family, and were ready to set off less than a year later with Luke, who was seven at the time. Over nine months, the family traveled to New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Egypt, Turkey, Croatia, Western Europe, and England, volunteering in some countries along the way as well to give back to the communities they were visiting.

The family had the chance to spend nine months together, and made sure to take notes of the things their trip taught them. Luke had the chance to experience different cultures and historical sites first-hand rather than hearing about them in the classroom, and regularly pulls from his experiences now that he's back at school. Suzanne, Mitch and Luke also took steps to simplify their lives after returning from their trip and prioritize family time, and started a travel blog to share their adventures and experiences with family and friends. Suzanne was even inspired to bundle some of her best travel tips with some of their stories and write her book From the Rut to the Ledge.

On this episode we talk to Suzanne about the family's inspiration behind taking the trip, and why they decided to prioritize slow travel. We also talk about what it was like to travel with Luke, how he reacted on learning about the family's plan to take the trip, and the differences she now sees in him. Suzanne also discusses the importance of learning from your travel experiences and implementing what you have learnt back into your life when you return home, and how this helped inspire her to write her book.

Hiking the West Coast Trail Nov 02, 2017
    Show notes

This past September Amanda hiked The West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island with her 2 friends, Steph & Yvette. On this episode of the podcast, they take you on their 7 day, 6 night adventure through the challenging 75km trek that is the West Coast Trail.

The WCT is probably the most popular multi-day hiking trip to do in Canada, and you have to book your permits well in advance because the trail is only open from June-September, so Amanda's trip was planned way back in January. Amanda, Steph and Yvette decided to hike the trail south to north, starting at the Gordon River entrance of the trail and finishing at Pachena Bay, before spending 3 days in Tofino for some much needed R&R afterwards.

On this episode, we share why we decided to hike the WCT, what the trail was like, some of our biggest learnings, what we did that we recommend others do, what we would do differently, as well as some of our high moments and low moments. We share what it was like to deal with getting our gear soaked in the rain, having a mouse in our tent, and the challenges of spending 24/7 together, as well as the waking up to beach sunrises, and even seeing a bear!

    Enjoy!
