Tour Guiding and Travel Overload with Andy Steves of Weekend Student Adventures May 17, 2018
    Show notes

Andy Steves grew up following his dad Rick Steves on his travel related work trips, spending two to four weeks a year in Europe while his dad updated guidebooks, created TV shows, and led tours. Initially pursuing a college degree in Industrial Design, Andy decided to shift his career focus towards travel based on his experiences during a trip he took to Europe after graduating high school, and realizing there was a niche for shorter term city tours for students studying abroad and on a budget. Since launching Weekend Student Adventures in 2010,

Andy has expanded the company to fit a variety of travel styles and tour lengths, and ensures quality experiences by visiting the city first to build optimal itineraries, and only hiring local guides. After growing to offer tours in fifteen cities across Europe, Andy has also released a Europe guidebook and has recently launched the Andy Steves Travel Podcast.

On this episode we talk to Andy about what it was like to grow up following his dad around the world and how he changed course to start his own travel career. We also chatted about how he launched Weekend Student Adventures, plans the tour itinerary in each city, and how he slows down occasionally to have a day for himself to keep from getting bored of similar sights while traveling. Andy also shares his experiences on what it takes to be a good guide, the changes he's seen with time in the way people travel, and some of his ongoing and upcoming projects.

    Show notes

Meg and Tom of Food, Fun, Travel met while working on a cruise ship after graduating from university. After Tom moved to Australia to be with Meg and the two tried the traditional 9 to 5 career path, they both decided it wasn't for them and that they wanted to travel full time and support themselves with an online travel business. Taking off for Asia with savings to carry them through for eighteen months and after the early success of an ebook, Meg and Tom poured themselves into building and evolving their travel blog, shifting its initial focus as a budget travel blog to a travel food blog as they both realized it was something they were passionate about. They are currently launching their new podcast "The Dish," where they hope to challenge and surprise their listeners pre-existing food conceptions by integrating some interesting food history and stories behind some worldwide favourite dishes and ingredients. Their first episode covers the history of tacos, and you can catch it here!

On this episode of the podcast we talk to Meg and Tom about their days working on a cruise ship and transitioning over to the decision to travel full time and start a travel blog. We discuss some of the steps they took to start building their business, how they found their niche with food blogging and maintain quality, what they did to bring income in to their business, and some of their tips and lessons learned looking back. They also give us recommendations for some of their favourite travel destinations and weirdest things they've eaten. We had a great conversation with them on such a wide variety of topics, this is definitely an episode you don't want to miss!

Our Trip to Panama! Apr 19, 2018
    Show notes

We decided to take advantage of the recent need to do a visa run and visit Central America, a part of the world that had always caught our attention but we hadn't yet made it to. Within Central America, we were drawn to Panama as we had heard great reviews and wanted to scope it out as a potential place to live in the future. After arriving in Panama City, we went straight to the domestic airport to catch a flight to Bocas del Toro, a popular backpacker destination. We managed to stay away from the crowds, however, by spending our time at the beautiful and eco-friendly Al Natural resort, where we loved the family style meals and time we spent relaxing.

On returning to Panama City after a few days, we took in one of its main tourist attractions, the Panama Canal, and found it fascinating to watch the ships maneuver the locks, learned about the recent expansion that allowed for the passage of even larger freighters, and walked along the city's boardwalks and causeways.

On this episode, we talk about our trip to Panama, including some of the reasons we decided to go, how we got to Bocas del Toro and our experience on Isla Bastimentos. Even after we took in the Panama Canal once we got back to the city, we know there's plenty more in Panama to explore, and think that we would definitely be able to live here for a while in the future!

How to Visit Iceland: Tips and Tricks from Yvette & James Apr 05, 2018
    Show notes

Yvette and James recently spent ten days in beautiful Iceland during the winter, and were able to take in some fabulous sites and experience some of the traditional culture. Initially drawn to Iceland as a travel destination because of photos on social media, they decided to visit during the cold winter months after an earlier plan to visit during the summer was cancelled, and made the most of planning their trip using travel blogs and reaching out to AirBnb hosts after popular travel sites didn't seem to offer much help. While they definitely enjoyed their road trip in a rental car and recommend this as the best way to see the country, they had to make some adjustments to the limited daylight hours and sometimes terrible driving conditions that came along with visiting in the winter!

On this episode we talk to Yvette and James about their experiences leading up to and during their trip to Iceland, including their itinerary, some of their trip highlights and their awesome New Year's Eve experience. They also chat to us about their packing list must haves, as well as trying some of the local foods, including a rotting shark dish (Hakarl) that was less than appetizing for Yvette. Between trekking to beautiful ice caves, visiting geysers, hunting for geothermal hot springs and diving between tectonic plates, Yvette and James travel stories will probably make Iceland one of your bucket list destinations!

2 Kids, Yoga, and a Camper Van: On the Road with the Nomad Yoga Family Mar 22, 2018
    Show notes

On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with Josh and Jenna of the Nomad Yoga Family to discuss being on the road, traveling with kids and the Digital Nomad life. After traveling separately during and after university and deciding that having a family wasn't going to affect their love of travel and adventure, Josh and Jenna decided they wanted a different lifestyle to the one they were living in Canada. Rather than stemming from unhappiness in their stable lifestyle, their desire to sell their yoga business and take their family on the road two years ago came from a desire for adventure and something different, and they haven't looked back since!

Traveling through the west coast of Canada, and parts of the United States and Mexico, Josh and Jenna have taken their business online and have adapted to day to day life traveling in a camper van, including traveling slower to allow their kids to enjoy their downtime, and making the most of 100 square feet of living space!

We chat with Josh and Jenna about all things overland travel, including the specs of their camper van and how they chose it, some of the factors they consider when choosing a place to camp for the night, and their feelings on safety and security driving through countries like Mexico with two young children. We also talk to them about what caused them to want to travel long-term in the first place, and some of the changes they've seen in their kids' personalities since hitting the road two years ago. With the wide range of topics Josh and Jenna cover with us, this is definitely not an episode to miss!

After spending 2 years studying in Australia and backpacking through SE Asia, Karyna was completely hooked on backpacking.

Maintaining Entrepreneurial Flexibility with Azma and Daniela from Adzenture Feb 08, 2018
    Show notes

This week we continue our travel entrepreneurship series as we sit down with Daniela and Azma from Adzenture Retreats. They run a travel business that integrates yoga and adventures by working with yoga teachers to plan and host yoga retreats around the world. Azma and Daniela were both inspired to start their travel business after realizing they wanted to leave the corporate world, desired more from their careers and that they both had a love of travel in common. The girls decided to start their business and after a brief setback and a change in tack, have been enjoying planning and hosting yoga retreats with teachers from around the world.

Daniela and Azma maintained focus on allowing the business to grow naturally and organically, which led to them being able to expand their retreats from their initially planned region of only Sri Lanka to international destinations such as Nicaragua, Cambodia, Mexico and Bali. The girls have used their travel experience to help research and select for ideal retreat locations, and have learned a lot about the patience and optimism it can take to run a business along the way. On this episode, we talk to them about everything from how they got Adzenture started, the lessons they've learned along the way, how the expectations of running a business differ from the reality, and Sri Lanka as an up and coming destination for yoga retreats.
