The Enneagram Three and Being Known | A Three's Wholehearted Journey with Maila Rito

Series: Wholehearted Enneagram: A Year Through the Types | Type Three | Episode 2 of 4

Amy interviews Maila Rito about discovering she is an Enneagram Three after years of mistyping as a One and then a Nine, with the realization catalyzed by an August 2024 business crisis in network marketing where public goals, pressure for “more,” and missing a rank triggered shame despite outward composure. A friend encouraged her to read about Type Three, which felt exposing and brought childhood flashbacks, clarifying her drive, moving goalposts, high-functioning anxiety, and emotion-avoidance through constant doing. Maila describes growth in naming and feeling emotions, setting boundaries to reduce comparison, and processing how Filipina cultural expectations around titles, achievement, and self-effacement shaped her. She shares how a convention stage recognition became a spiritual turning point, leading her to coaching and transforming “Tribe Rising” into a women’s community centered on belonging, healing, purpose, and grace, emphasizing the message that she is loved and enough apart from performance.

Wholehearted Enneagram: A Year Through the Types | Type Three | Episode 1 of 4

What does it look like to be the most capable person in the room… and still wonder if you are enough?

The Enneagram Three is often admired for her drive, competence, vision, and ability to make things happen. But beneath the achievement can be a quieter question: Who am I when I’m not performing?

In this opening episode of Type Three month, Amy sits down with Deanna Sudom to explore the inner world of the Three, the fear of being worthless, the longing to feel genuinely valuable, and the ways a Three can learn to shape-shift into whatever the world rewards.

Together, they talk about the strange tension of a life that looks successful on the outside but can feel disconnected on the inside. They explore performance, identity, emotional disconnection, and what happens when achievement becomes a way of securing worth.

And then they bring that journey into faith.

What happens when a Three approaches her relationship with God the same way she approaches everything else as something to manage, optimize, and accomplish? What does it mean to receive from God rather than produce for Him? And what might become possible when she finally gives herself permission to simply be?

This is an invitation for the Three to recover the self beneath the doing, reconnect with her feelings, and discover the freedom of a worth that was never dependent on her performance.

You are worthy and loved before you do a thing.

    In this episode:
    • Understanding the heart and motivation of the Enneagram Three
    • The fear of worthlessness and the longing to be genuinely valuable
    • Why Threes adapt and shape-shift to meet expectations
    • The hidden cost of achievement and image management
    • Moving from performing spirituality to receiving from God
    • What growth and wholeness can look like for a Three
    • A simple practice for reconnecting with yourself beneath the doing
    • A word of encouragement for the Three woman who is tired of performing

The Enneagram Four and Authentic Identity | A Four's Wholehearted Journey with Janay Lanier Sep 29, 2026
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Wholehearted Enneagram: A Year Through the Types | Type Four | Episode 4 of 4

What if the number you've been living inside was never really yours?

In this episode, Amy sits down with Janay Lanier, a mom of three, worship leader, and longtime friend for one of the most honest and unscripted conversations of the year. Janay spent years identifying as an Enneagram Seven. Energetic, joyful, the person who carries the room. And then motherhood, of all things, gave her fewer places to hide from who she actually was.

This is a live, unpolished, real-time conversation, and that's exactly the point.

    You'll hear about:

    • What it felt like to live inside the Seven story for years, and why it fit well enough to stay
    • The moment in a park with a friend when a single question stopped Janay in her tracks and lit up a million lightbulbs
    • Why Janay resisted the Four because it felt too messy, too unsafe, too much like everything she'd been told not to be
    • How motherhood didn't turn her into someone new; it just gave her fewer places to hide from who she already was
    • The childhood message of not too much, not too little, and how it shaped decades of showing up as someone slightly less than fully herself
    • Sitting in the car with sleeping kids and a Fleetwood Mac song, and finally saying out loud that sounds like a Four
    • The freedom of dropping the shame script and learning to sit with emotion instead of running from it
    • What she told the Lord before she was willing to put on the shoes of a Four, and what shifted when He answered

You were never being fake. You just didn't have all the information yet.

Too Much vs. Not Enough | Understanding the Enneagram Type Four with Sonja Scott Sep 22, 2026
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Wholehearted Enneagram: A Year Through the Types | Type Four | Episode 3 of 4

What if the thing you've been told is too much... is exactly what the world needs from you?

In this episode, Amy sits down with Wholehearted Coach and Type Four Sonja Scott to walk the Victim, Villain, Hero, and Guide framework through the Four's unique lens, and what emerges is one of the most honest maps of the Four's inner landscape this series has offered.

Sonja brings both her personal story and her coaching work with women and families to a question every Four has lived: how do you stop erasing yourself long enough to discover that your depth was never the problem?

    You'll hear about:

    • The rejection wound at the root of the Four's Victim story and how it can quietly become self-rejection
    • Self-erasure as the Four's Villain role, the slow disappearing act that looks like keeping the peace
    • The pivot moment in Sonja's own story that marked the beginning of her second volume
    • Being the hero in everyone else's story before learning to be the hero in your own
    • The difference between carrying someone's story and embodying it and what healthy Guide energy actually looks like for a Four
    • The too much vs. not enough pendulum and the Voice of Love that tells the Four she is exactly right
    • Raising teenagers as a Four and how she is learning to stay attuned without getting stuck in the mud with them
    • Why when we deem parts of ourselves unworthy, we lose our place in the plot of God's story

You are not too much. You were made to feel deeply, and the world needs what only you can name.

    Show notes

Wholehearted Enneagram: A Year Through the Types | Type Four | Episode 2 of 4

What do you do when the limitation won't move?

This week, Amy shares the conversation she had with her dear friend and Type Four, Sara Hagerty, author, mother of seven, and one of the most honest voices she knows on grief, hope, and the sacred work of finding God in the fenced-in places.

This conversation happened at the 2026 Wholehearted Enneagram Summit, and it is one of the most tender and true exchanges of the year.

    You'll hear about:

    • The difference between feeling limited and being limited, and why both matter
    • What Sara's son's battle with Lyme disease taught her about mystery, acceptance, and the stories God writes that we would never choose
    • Why grief skipped becomes grumpiness and what it looks like to actually lean in
    • French Fry Beach Night and the surprising gift of marking small celebrations in the middle of profound loss
    • The pilgrimage of slow and what Sara has been learning about her phone, her anxiety, and the frenzy underneath modern life
    • A word for the woman who has been interceding for something to change and wondering if it ever will

The unplanned season is not a detour from the story; it is the story.

Wholehearted Enneagram: A Year Through the Types | Type Four | Episode 1 of 4

What does it look like to be the most feeling person in the room… and spend years believing that made you too much?

Amy opens Type Four month with something that has never happened in this series before: Deanna Sudom, her trusted colleague and co-teacher all year long, steps out from behind the teaching role and into the guest chair to share her own story as a Type Four.

Deanna came to Amy as a coaching client. She did her own wholehearted work. She became a certified Wholehearted Coach. And now she is one of the most trusted voices on Amy's team — a Four who found her way from longing to offering, from feeling too much to giving her depth as a gift.

    You'll hear about:

    • The Four's core longing to be seen, known, and understood — and the fear that full knowing would mean rejection
    • Why Fours aren't dramatic or self-indulgent — they are among the most honest people you will ever know
    • What envy actually feels like from the inside — and why it is not about wanting what someone else has
    • The Seven-Four dynamic between Amy and Deanna — what complementary opposites look like in a real working relationship
    • How Deanna's own wholehearted journey moved her from client to coach to trusted discernment partner
    • What Fours most need to hear about being known by God without being fixed by Him

    When Self-Awareness Isn't Enough | A Taste of the 2026 Wholehearted Enneagram Summit Sep 01, 2026
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

You've done the work. You know your number, your wing, your stress arrow. And something still feels just out of reach.

This week's episode is something a little different, a curated sample from this year's 5th Annual Wholehearted Enneagram Summit, featuring three of the summit's most compelling voices in conversation with Amy.

    You'll hear:

    • Sam Eldredge (Enneagram 4) on why so many of us are chasing a polished version of ourselves that will never actually satisfy and why that's not transformation; it's exhaustion
    • Simi John (Enneagram Six) on what burnout actually is, why it keeps finding the same people, and what two years of solitude and inner work taught her about healing
    • Sean Palmer (Enneagram Three) on what the Enneagram offers when life collapses and why your strengths are exactly the wrong tool for getting out
    • Sarah Jackson (Enneagram Six) and I had a conversation on the difference between spiritual hustle and spiritual renewal and what it looks like to give from a well that doesn't run dry
    • Chuck DeGroat (Enneagram on slow, courageous character change, everyday narcissism, and what it actually looks like when the Enneagram becomes a wisdom tool rather than an excuse

This is the conversation the summit was built around: the Enneagram can name your patterns. It cannot set you free from them. That's the difference between insight and transformation.

Enneagram Five: From Head Knowledge to Heart Connection | Sherri Hughes-Gragg Aug 25, 2026
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Series: Wholehearted Enneagram: A Year Through the Types | Type Five | Episode 4 of 4

    Episode Description

What does it look like when a Five stops hoarding what she knows... and starts giving it away?

Amy closes Type Five month with Sherri Hughes-Gragg, a Christian author and Bible teacher, who joins for one of the most theologically rich conversations of the year. Sherri has spent her career doing what Fives do best: going deeper than anyone else into the culture, history, and geography of Scripture, and then bringing back everything she found as a gift for others.

Together, Amy and Sherri explore what it looks like when the Five’s extraordinary interior life stops being a place of retreat and becomes a place of offering, and what it means to linger in the Savior’s presence when your instinct is always to study, prepare, and observe.

    In this episode:

    • Why the Five’s love of depth and research is not just an intellectual gift, it’s a spiritual one
    • What it actually costs a Five to take what she’s studied in private and offer it publicly
    • What the Five most needs to hear about presence
    • The difference between studying God and being known by Him, and why that distinction matters most for the Five
    • A word for every Five who has been preparing to step forward… and is still waiting until she knows enough

You have more to give than you know. And you don’t have to retreat to be safe.
