Wyoming Part 1 w/ Abbey Krebs Oct 22, 2024

Brian and Abbey are going on their first western hunt together and Abbey chose Rifle Antelope as her first trip! Abbey recently finished her pharmacy residency and finally was able to join Brian on western hunts. They couple talk about how they picked Antelope, the things they are looking forward to in the hunt, and what they hope to find during the hunt!

Brian and Abbey also talk about recent bowhunts in Minnesota, and cover some of the latest tactics they are using with the XOP saddles doing run and gun even on private land to get in the perfect trees for each wind. They talk about harvesting does, and even spill the tea on an arrow shot at a big buck!

Fighting the Colorado Hunting Ban Jun 11, 2024

NASCAR and Elk Hunting Sep 05, 2023

Hunting More as a Trophy Husband Mar 28, 2023

Life of an Outfitter Mar 14, 2023

Bransen is a second-generation outfitter for Western Timberline Outfitters and specializes is big mule deer. Bransen shares some insight for what it’s like to manage hundreds of thousands of acres of private land leases to grow a healthy herd for his clients and what kind of experience his clients can look forward to. Elk Hunting and Shot Placement Mar 07, 2023

Getting More Western Tags Feb 28, 2023

On this episode of The Western Rookie Podcast, Dan and Brian have Ryan Stieg on to talk about getting more tags each season.

Ryan grew up in the flat land like both Dan and Brian, but like the hosts, caught the western bug during college and started piecing together how to get out west as much as possible. Ryan has had incredible success with North Dakota’s second chance draw to get rifle Whitetail Buck tags in underrated units while building points and using his bow tag to chase Mule Deer each fall in the badlands. Ryan has taken this same strategy to Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado to show it is possible to have success on Elk, Mule Deer, and Antelope with easier-to-draw tags if you’re willing to put in the work.

Early Western Success Feb 14, 2023

On this episode of The Western Rookie Brian and Dan are joined by Chris O’Neal, a big game hunter and shed hunting enthusiast from Wyoming.

Chris grew up in South Dakota pheasant hunting from a young age. As he got older his girlfriend’s dad introduced him to big game hunting for whitetail deer & antelope. Chris’s passion for big game hunting grew the more he learned. He decided to level up his hunts and bought a bow. On his birthday in 2012 he was able to kill his biggest buck, a 177” monster. Present day Chris lives in Wyoming and loves to shed hunt and chase bulls. He devoted himself to learning everything he could about elk hunting and made it a mission to kill a bull elk. He had no idea what was in store for him on his first season hunting the west. This episode shares those stories and so much more.

First Archery Mule Deer Hunt Sep 13, 2022

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan updates the listeners on how his first ever archery mule deer hunt is going.

Dan is midway through an archery mule deer hunt in Utah where he is helping his friend Linnea fill her first ever archery tag on a big mule deer buck. Dan and Linnea met last year when they competed on a van/bus/rv renovation tv show called Gutted. Linnea is a full time van lifer and Dan and his wife Samantha spent their past life renovating RV’s. Linnea has been a die hard flyfisher for a while now but when she found out that Dan is a hunter she immediately started asking for advice and trying to get him to help her fill her first ever tag. Dan and Linnea have found and begun to pattern some mature Utah muleys and are hopeful for what the next few days have in store.

One State Away But a Whole New World Aug 23, 2022

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with Zach Schroeder, a Minnesota native who’s passion for playing football had to take a back seat to his love for the outdoors.

Zach is a 22 year old outdoorsman that grew up in the small town of Paynesville, MN. Zach has been hunting since he was 5 years old, it started with a bow for his birthday and then his first bb gun which he used to chase chipmunks with on his grandma's property. Before long he started tagging along on deer, turkey and duck hunts with his dad. Zach had a lot of success in the woods from age 11-14 and then football started and hunting got pushed aside. Zach and his buddies tried to get every bit of hunting in while they weren’t on the field but it was limited to Saturday and Sunday after games. Now that Zach is in college he decided to quit football to give himself more time to go hunting. Zach and Dan discuss the transition from sports to the outdoors and the preparation that is going into Zach’s first western hunt.

A Bear Hunt for the Record Books Jun 07, 2022

Western Hunting Rifle Systems Mar 16, 2022

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with long range shooting enthusiast and Gunwerks salesman, Pake Taylor. Pake and Dan discuss all aspects of long range shooting systems.

Pake grew up in eastern Washington on a cattle ranch that gave him the ability to spend a solid chunk of his time outdoors. He started chasing birds and small game the moment his folks kicked him loose with his first BB gun, and the obsession has only grown expennationaly from there! On a regular year Pake will chase animals ranging in sizes from doves up to elk and everything else in between them from northern Washington to Wyoming where he lives. Where there's smoke there is a fire and his fire is deeply rooted into long range shooting and it only seems to grow with every confirmed hit. Gunwerks says they teach some to shoot out well past 1,000 yards but, most importantly that style of shooting leads to making a shot at 800 yards a slam dunk. Pake states, "Joining one of the various shooting leagues (PRS or NRL) is an awesome way to get time beyond a gun in unstable shooting positions while under stress. The best part is that it's an absolute blast to be a part of!" Gunwerks is strongly hunting oriented but has multiple options for crossover rifles for competition rifles and ELR rifles. Jacob is a Kentucky native with a masters in education. Jacob hunted here and there as a kid but really got back into the sport around 10 years ago. He now deer and turkey hunts and has hunted elk in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Montana. Jacob is very intentional about getting his kids involved in the outdoors and loves using his analytical mind and background in education to gather information, organize it and use it to his benefit when it comes to preparing for hunts.

Chasing Mountain Lions and Bears With Hounds Feb 23, 2022

On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with Utah houndsman Dustin Clark about his love for hunting with his dogs. Dan and Dustin recap their first 3 days chasing lions in the mountains of Utah and what they are hoping for on their 4th and final day.

Dustin got his first hound 14 years ago after a coworker introduced him to the sport. He now has a team of 10 dogs and chases cats and bears every chance he can. Dustin and his wife started a houndsman themed apparel line called Cold Strike Gear and live and breathe this sport 24/7. Dustin spends his summers chasing bears with his family, his falls guiding elk hunts and his winters tacking lions within an hour of his home. Dan and Dustin talk about everything a first time mountain lion or bear hunter needs to know and expect when chasing these large predators through the mountains.
