The Well Of Sound

Latest Episodes:

Marc Bolan & T. Rex Nov 15, 2025

Show notes

Lost to a mystical dimension, this episode has been recovered, as if by faerie magic. Recorded not long after Dave and Lex's Favorite Bowie Non-Singles episode, this 2+ hour glam-o-rama continues their discussion of diamondy, tricksy pioneers of that special '70s sound... with the arguable king of glam rock: Marc Bolan. Strap in. Let's get it on and bang a gong. It's the T. Rex universe.

Favorite Bowie Non-Singles Feb 06, 2024

Show notes

Believe it or not, Dave and Lex have never dug deep on David Bowie, on- OR off-air. That changes with this episode. With a slight twist, of course. They won't be talking hits. This episode is strictly about their favorite Bowie songs that were never released as singles. All decades are spanned in this retrospective, and neither host has an idea of what the other has selected. Let's sparkle some stardust and get to listening!

Let's Go Live Nov 27, 2023

Show notes

Let's open up that big ol' crate of live records... Dave and Lex talk about six of our favorite concert recordings and dig in on what we think makes a good live record.

Ballads Of Oct 31, 2023

Show notes

We stumbled across the idea in our very first episode, and then unearthed it with its recent remaster...

In this episode, we gather up our favorite songs with "Ballad Of" in the title. Most are true story-songs, as traditional ballads should be, but others are ballads in name only. It's a loosey-goosey exploration of theme, with more than a few trips down memory lane.

Did we forget a great Ballad Of? You know where to tell us!

Underrated Solo Albums Oct 18, 2023

Show notes

Dave and Lex weather a giant storm to talk about what's really important in this life -- underrated solo albums. They discuss a total of six albums, spanning pop, rock, ambient, soul, and even a film score. Which ones? You'll have to listen to find out.

Chrissie Hynde & Pretenders Apr 01, 2023

Show notes

Chrissie Hynde's gravitational presence put her right at the heart of rock & roll's most famous scenes over and over again. And that happened before she recorded her first Pretenders album. Lex and Dave devote over two hours to the indisputable Queen of Cool, who paved the way for the raw energy sound of '90s female rock stars. From the streets of Ohio to the streets of London, this tale tracks the birth, death, and afterlife of punk. Unfasten your safety pins!

Mott The Hoople (Remastered) Jan 02, 2023

Show notes

The episode that launched it all... is back, cleaned up and injected with archival clips and new music.

If you've never listened to our first episode about Mott The Hoople or found it unlistenable because of amateurish audio quality, we encourage you to check out this fresh version.

There are a still some imperfections, to be sure, but our conversation has some terrific nuggets and Mott's music always delivers. We recorded this episode at Common House in Charlottesville, VA, and you can hear some background ambiance.

At the time, we recorded the episode with the hope that people might find our mutual Hoople and Hunter obsession engaging enough to come back for more, but we weren't totally confident that we had gold. 30+ epic episodes later, it's hard to believe there was ever any doubt. Thanks for your support along the way!

Enjoy and don't forget our companion Mott playlist...

Meat Loaf & Jim Steinman Oct 18, 2022

Show notes

If you have a knee-jerk reaction to the name Meat Loaf, we get it. Like Phil Collins, he and his collaborator Jim Steinman hit oversaturation status by the early '80s and then came back for revenge in the early '90s. But Meat & Jim's journey that weaves around these mega-milestones is simultaneously fascinating, bizarre, charmed, and unlucky. From stage to stereo to screen, the supporting players who pop up along the way might surprise you. Settle in for a ride that takes you to hell and back... over and over... and over again.
