The heavy footfalls always started at the furthest end the hall. They had an uneven tempo like a song with a heavy swing. Ba-bump. Ba-bump. I’m pretty sure what made the sounds has a limp. I had just fallen asleep when my doorbell rang. I’m not sure if you’ve ever had your doorbell rung late at night, but its a chilling sound. I picked up my phone and saw a notification from the doorbell app. It said, “Someone is at the door.” This message usually gave me a warm feeling, but that night it sent a chill up my spine.

I was flattered to be invited into a group of such young, attractive people. In my late thirties, I was starting to feel as if my glory days were behind me.
