Show notes

Eric and Phil explore 2006's The Devil Wears Prada, diving into the powerhouse performances of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci in this psychological examination of work-life balance and personal transformation.
• Meryl Streep delivers an iconic performance as Miranda Priestly that earned an Oscar nomination and remains quoted to this day
• The film isn't just about fashion but serves as a character study of ambition and authenticity
• Strong feminist themes emerge naturally through character development rather than heavy-handed messaging
• The relationship between Andy and her boyfriend, Nate, remains a hotly debated topic among fans
• Stanley Tucci steals every scene he's in with perfect comedic timing and emotional depth
• The film's rushed ending leaves some character development unresolved
• Discussion of the upcoming sequel and whether it's necessary given how well the original stands on its own
• Both hosts give the film high ratings with Phil considering it one of his favorite films of all time
Letterbox'd Synopsis: Andy moves to New York to work in the fashion industry. Her boss is extremely demanding, cruel and won’t let her succeed if she doesn’t fit into the high class elegant look of their magazine.

The Game Room Where It Happens - L.A. Noire Aug 20, 2025

Show notes

We dive into LA Noire, Rockstar Games' often overlooked 2011 detective thriller that pioneered facial animation technology but struggled to become a true classic.
• LA Noire was revolutionary for its MotionScan facial animation system, creating unprecedented realism for interrogation scenes
• The game's "Truth, Doubt, Lie" system became iconic but often led to unexpectedly aggressive responses from protagonist Cole Phelps
• Many cases were inspired by real 1940s Los Angeles crimes, showing Team Bondi's commitment to historical authenticity
• While individual detective cases shine, the overarching narrative struggles with cohesion and too many competing storylines
• The 1947 Los Angeles open world looks impressive but feels empty compared to other Rockstar titles
• Combat and action sequences are merely serviceable, with the detective work being the game's true strength
• The award-winning soundtrack perfectly captures the noir atmosphere and remains one of the game's highlights
• Despite its flaws, LA Noire scored well with critics (89 on Metacritic) and deserves recognition for its ambition

International Feature: Grave of the Fireflies Aug 13, 2025

Show notes

The devastating impact of war through the eyes of children creates one of cinema's most profound animated experiences, standing as Studio Ghibli's most sobering and realistic work.
• Grave of the Fireflies (1988) is directed by Isao Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli
• The film follows 14-year-old Seita and his younger sister Setsuko as they struggle to survive after losing their mother in WWII Japan
• Originally released as a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro, creating a stark contrast in tone and subject matter
• Based on a semi-autobiographical short story where the author survived but lost his sister to malnutrition
• Currently holds 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and is widely considered one of the greatest war films ever made
• Recently became available on Netflix after decades of limited accessibility
• The complex portrayal of Seita's character sparks debates about responsibility versus impossible circumstances
Letterbox'd Synopsis: In the final months of World War II, 14-year-old Seita and his sister Setsuko are orphaned when their mother is killed during an air raid in Kobe, Japan. After a falling out with their aunt, they move into an abandoned bomb shelter. With no surviving relatives and their emergency rations depleted, Seita and Setsuko struggle to survive.

Late To The Party - Man of Steel Aug 06, 2025

Show notes

We investigate Zack Snyder's 2013 Superman origin film Man of Steel, comparing it with the new 2025 Superman movie and reflecting on how its controversial approach continues to influence superhero films a decade later.
• Krypton sequences featuring Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon stand as the film's strongest segments
• Flashback structure feels disjointed and lacks clear purpose or emotional throughline
• Kevin Costner's tornado death scene remains controversial and doesn't make logical sense
• The massive destruction of Metropolis during the climactic battle set a precedent superhero films still react against
• Henry Cavill never got the opportunity to show Superman's hopeful, optimistic side
• General Zod provides a compelling villain with understandable motivations
• The film's neck-snap ending needed more emotional aftermath to be effective
• DC's rushed attempt to create a cinematic universe ultimately undermined what could have been a thoughtful trilogy
• Animated Superman adaptations like "My Adventures with Superman" often capture the character better than live-action

Letterbox'd Synopsis: A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

The Game Room Where It Happens - Classic Sports Games Jul 23, 2025

Show notes

Eric and Phil take a nostalgic journey through arcade-style sports games from the 90s and 2000s, exploring the decline of this once-thriving genre that prioritized outrageous fun over simulation.
• NBA Jam with its flaming basketballs, NFL Blitz with its bone-crushing late hits, and other classics represented a golden era of accessible sports gaming
• Both hosts reveal their "Holy Trinity" of sports games, with surprising choices making the cut
• Concern over concussions and injuries in real sports has made publishers reluctant to celebrate the physical nature of these older games
• The accessibility of these games welcomed players who didn't follow or understand the actual sports
