Very Clinical: Dr. Chris Salierno on Neoss Implants Oct 19, 2021
    Show notes

Returning this week is Dr. Chris Salierno formerly from Dental Economics and now at Tend Dental.

Chris lets us know where to go and eat in NYC and how he's taking lessons from the hospitality industry to advance customer service at Tend.

Clinically, Chris took an implant residency post dental school in implant restorations and he talks about how implant restorations sparked his speaking career which sparked his entire career in the spotlight.

Chris has used Neoss Implants extensively and lets us know the pros to this particular implant system.

We also talk a bit about how problematic implant cases can be that you inherit because of the sheer number of different implants out there.

Thanks for listening and we'll catch you next time! Be sure to find the Very Clinical Facebook group!

Our friends at Microcopy understand that having systems in the dental office makes things simpler and more efficient. That's why Microcopy created the Neoshine system. Except it's really 3 different systems. What are you polishing? Microcopy has a polishing system for it! The neoshine S system will polish your composites to a high shine! Neoshine Z will make polishing zirconia and lithium disilicate simple and fast! Polishing metal? The Neoshine M system is made just for that! Each system has two steps and comes in cups or points. And like all Microcopy products they're sterile packaged single patient use so no clean up and no chance of cross contamination! Go check it out at verydentalpodcast.com/neoshine!

I've finally had a chance to try Cosmedent's Renamel Bulk fill and I've got thoughts. I've used several different kinds of bulk composites and I think Cosmedent has figured it out. Handling is terrific. I heat my composite for placement and Renamel bulk fill was easily placed and sculpted. What I like most about it is that it doesn't seem as translucent as many other bulk fill composites. Cosmedent is offering a killer 20% off deal for Very Dental Podcast Network listeners by using the coupon code "VDP21" at checkout on their website! So go check out Renamel Bulkfill at verydentalpodcast.com/bulkfill

Hiring is a problem for everyone. And once you've found that new person, training them is expensive and time consuming. Zirc's Color Method streamlines the chaos of materials, instruments and the sterilization process. It simplifies and keeps the practice running efficiently which is KEY all the time…but ESPECIALLY if you are short-staffed. The color method makes on-boarding new team members easy. Everyone can identify quickly with color! The color method can also help make it easy for the doctor to find everything for a procedure if they need to come in on a night or weekend. Also...colorful chairside set-ups look amazing from the patient chair. To find out more about Zirc's Color Method head over to verydentalpodcast.com/color.

Very Dental: "All the Gems Come Out" with Dr. Jason Smithson Oct 18, 2021
    Show notes

What's the very best way to figure out what a patient really wants? You have an honest and authentic conversation with them! Alan welcomes back Dr. Jason Smithson to the Very Dental Podcast to talk about having conversations with patients! Jason and Alan spend a LOT of time talking about how they've learned to have great conversations. (hint: less talking, more listening) Any time I get a chance to tell stories with Jason, I take it! I think you'll really enjoy this one

Some of the topics they covered:

    • "Instant Orthodontics" good dentistry or bad dentistry?
    • Gen Z and Instagram filters
    • The esthetic preferences of younger generations and cultures are not necessarily the same as what dentists have learned!
    • John the 80-ish year old "very English guy" ("I don't want to look like her.")
    • Why don't we teach how to have a conversation with people about what they want?
    • The cosmetic patient that "didn't like" what they had done
    • Giving diastemas back!
    • Clinician to patient "I don't care" vs. "I don't mind"
    • Dentists need to keep their mouths shut...more listening and less talking
    • "All the gems come out after a minute or two..."
    • Is it good to be "busy?"
    • How Jason schedules recalls
    • A "very Cornish" patient and how listening helped solve his problem

The Very Dental podcast is brought to you by our friends at Microcopy Dental. Neodiamonds from Microcopy Dental are very fine. I mean, all of them are awesome, but some of them are actually "very fine." Specifically I mean the yellow striped ones they call "finishing" diamonds. I use Microcopy finishing diamonds on just about any patient that I might be spinning a bur on. Very fine finishers do the heavy lifting on composites so polishing is simple and easy. I use them to finish crown preps. I've been known to adjust Emax and Zirconia with them. Once you try them you're going to find a ton of places to use them! And just like all of Microcopy's burs, they're sterile out of the package and single use means they're sharp and efficient and can be disposed of at the end of the appointment! Go check them out at verydentalpodcast.com/veryfine (all one word)!

The Very Dental podcast is also supported by our friends at Cosmedent! Cosmedent has just released a new composite that you're going to want to try! It's called "Renamel Bulkfill" and it's here to simplify your posterior composite placement. It rivals the speed and efficiency of amalgam but it's still packable, sculptable and polishes like a dream! You can cure up to 4mm increments, so it's sure to increase the efficiency of working in the posterior. It's radiopaque for easy identification on recalls, too! I'll get a chance to try it clinically next week and I'll give you my review with photos in the Very Dental Facebook group! Cosmedent is offering a killer 20% off deal for Very Dental Podcast Network listeners by using the coupon code "VDP21" at checkout on their website! So go check out Renamel Bulkfill at verydentalpodcast.com/bulkfill

The dental industry is facing a challenging time in hiring team members. If you've been trying to hire, you probably feel this deeply It's important for teams to look for ways to do more with less…to increase efficiency. Mr. Thirsty One Step allows a dentist or hygienist to work independently. MTOS has NO MAINTENANCE, comes pre-assembled and is 100% disposable! Zirc wants to show you how helpful Mr. Thirsty One Step can be in your practice. Go to verydentalpodcast.com/thirstytrial (all one word) and you can get a free sample of Mr. Thirsty One Step! Each sample comes with a small, medium and large!

Very Clinical: A New Kind of DSO with Dr. Chris Salierno Oct 12, 2021
    Show notes

Very Clinical welcomes Dr. Chris Salierno onto the podcast!

Chris was well knows as the Editor-in-Chief of Dental Economics for the past several years, but has taken on a new role as one the main officers in a hot new growing DSO on the East Coast.

    Highlights include:

    • Bond, James Bond - Have you seen "No Time to Die"? Which Bond is your favorite?
    • What is Tend? Where is Tend? Who is Tend?
    • How does a DSO differ clinically from a non-DSO?
    • What is Chris' role with the company?

An interesting interview especially since Kevin and Zach are both in non-DSO practices, it's interesting to hear how the other side does things.

    Show notes

Alan is joined by Dr. Addison Killeen to talk about Voices of Dentistry, his new book with Dr. Mark Costes and a bunch of great ideas for purchasing an existing practice!

    • Addison has done a startup, done acquisitions and has owned multiple practices...he's done the thing.
    • Buy a practice or startup?
    • What's the best kind of practice to buy?
    • Acquisition = revenue from the get go
    • Advice to sellers: don't "upgrade" stuff to attract a buyer. Let the buyer choose their technology, etc.
    • What are banks looking for from a potential buyer?
    • How to handle difficult conversations with patients of the last guy (the office who never treated perio, etc.)
    • Where did Addison's entrepreneurial streak come from?
    • Hot cycling talk

Very Dental: It's OK to be a Regular Dentist with Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver Oct 08, 2021
    Show notes

Alan welcomes Dr. Shawn Van de Vyver to the Very Dental podcast! Shawn is a self described "regular dentist." What is a regular dentist? Why are we having this conversation? Well, blame it on social media. Some of the things they discussed:

    • Shawn gets up early in self defense
    • Social media has ruined the "regular dentist" gig for many people.
    • Who are the patients that do all these FMR's that we ce in continuing education?
    • Shawn's time is worth nothing (he does his own lab work)
    • The narrative of "opportunity cost"
    • Al on podcasting/Shawn on video
    • Buying a practice during COVID (and hiring)
    • Narratives vs. reality in dental hygiene models
    • Health care choices and how money affects them

Off Topic: The Price of a Hard Boiled Egg with Dr. Mark Costes Oct 04, 2021
    Show notes

Alan chats with co-founder of the Voices of Dentistry, Dr. Mark Costes. We talked VoD and planning a dental meeting, being a 50 year old dude and what waking up early (REALLY early) has done for Mark.

The Very Dental Podcast is also supported by Zirc! How often do you wish that your patients didn't have lips, cheeks or tongues? This isn't a very practical wish, but the Mr. Thirsty One Step basically grants it to you! It's a comfortable bite block that removes the cheek and tongue from your operating field while the integrated suction keeps everything completely dry! And you don't even need any special hardware to use it! Best of all, single use means that once you're done, you just dispose of it. No clean up, no sterilization hassles. Mr. Thirsty One Step is like your wish come true! Go check it out at verydentalpodcast.com/thirsty!

Very Dental: "Go Visit Your Lab" featuring Dr. David Hornbrook Oct 01, 2021
    Show notes

Alan welcomes Dr. David Hornbrook to the Very Dental podcast! David was the presenter at the Vedder Society's fall meeting and he did not disappoint! He's an amazing clinician with an approachable style of presentation and we got to see and interact with him for 3 days! Some of the things we discussed on the podcast were:

    • David is REALLY glad to be back to in person teaching!
    • David explains how he became such a lab and materials focused clinician
    • "Knowing exactly what they're doing in the lab has made me a better dentist."
    • Do you invite your lab to ask for more information and critique your work?
    • Digital workflow isn't an invitation to be sloppy. PVS is way better for someone who doesn't pay attention to details
    • What's the benefit of visiting the lab?
    • Do you know who is creating your restorations?
    • Your lab techs know what kind of dentist you are!
    • Let's go to Lab Day in Chicago!
    • Do you do CE with your lab tech(s)?
    • Are we moving to implants too quickly?
    • Bridges are legitimate treatment in a lot of cases and implant are not always the best choice.
    • The greatest trick for strengthening a zirconia bridge!
    • Becoming David Hornbrook
    • Photography vs. "Instagram Photography"
    • Patient expectations and "ideal" dentistry
    • Weighing minimally invasive techniques against creating room for materials
    • Informed consent and how the dentist "spins" the treatment
    • David's recommendations for new dentists:
      • find a mentor
      • eliminate the undesirable procedures from your practice as soon as possible
      • realize that you're going to be a dentist for a long time
      • "hurry up and slow down"
      • Be uncompromising

Very Clinical: Chrome in a Day Sep 28, 2021
    Show notes

Kevin and Zach are joined by Roe Dental president BJ Kowalski and East side rep Jayne Winn

This is a discussion of the Chrome technique for placing and restoring All On X implant restorations. We discuss the history and step by step instructions for using the Chrome technique. We hope you enjoy this podcast!

The Very Dental Podcast Network is brought to you by our friends at Microcopy Dental. Here are 3 reasons that you should check out Microcopy Dental:

    1. Their Instagram posts are hysterical. Dental marketing is usually cheesy and appeals to the lowest common denominator. Microcopy Dental posts legitimately funny stuff on their Instagram account!
    2. Microcopy makes a wide variety of single use carbides, diamonds and polishers. Such a wide variety that their catalog reminds me of an encyclopedia. But with better pictures.
    3. Microcopy dental makes it so you'll never have to experience that "dull bur" feeling ever again. A new bur. Every. Single. Time.

Go check out all Microcopy Dental has to offer at verydentalpodcast.com/microcopy

The Very Dental Podcast Network is also brought to you by the fine folks at Zirc. The first time I knew anything about Zirc was a LONG time ago. I tried the Zirc Crystal HD mirror and it's wrecked me on any other mirror ever since. If you want a dental mirror that reminds you of using an HD TV, you should check out Zirc's Crystal HD mirror. It comes as a replacement head for any mirror handle you already use or as a single piece. Either way, it will change the way you see everything for the better. Go check out the Crystal HD mirror from Zirc at verydentalpodcast.com/mirrors

The Very Dental Podcast network thanks our friends at Cosmedent for all of their support! Have you ever wished that one simple and painless change could make your dentistry better? Cosmedent is here for you! If you aren't using a microfilled composite (and let's be honest, you probably aren't), I can guarantee that it makes anterior composite dentistry easier, better and more fun. The handling and polishability of Cosmedent's Renamel Microfill must be experienced to understand the major difference it makes! Go check out Renamel Microfill at verydentalpodcast.com/microfill
