AME: Offering Options vs. Offering a Suggestion Oct 23, 2023

Show notes

Are we supposed to offer patients options or suggestions? Or how about "recommendations?"

Dental school left Al with some pretty serious baggage. Some of that involves what we owe patients regarding treatment we recommend. Do we need to give them a list of options for every potential treatment? Do we need to talk about treatment options that we don't like or wouldn't do ourselves?

Two rules:

Everyone deserves to say no to our best treatment (thanks Kevin Fryer!)
No one ever said you had to talk about treatment options that you don't like.

Very Dental: Therapy, Psychiatry and Dentists with Dr. Russell Schafer Oct 20, 2023

Show notes

Dr. Russell Schafer joins Alan to talk about mental health. The two of them have experience with mental health treatment of different kinds. Russell has struggled on and off with mental health issues that he's pretty convinced started in dental school. Go figure. Al is pretty sure his problems with drugs and alcohol started in dental school as well.

These days it's very trendy for people to talk about how important therapy has been for them and Russell and Al agree. But Russell is convinced that psychiatry and medications have been given short shrift in the mental health discussion.

Very Clinical: Predictably Frank Oct 10, 2023

Show notes

Dr. Frank Clayton joins Kevin and Zach in this throwback episode to talk about roundhouse sealants, running on time and choosing predictability!

Original show notes:

Frank Clayton seals everything from teeth to driveways to decks and no job is too big, no crack is too large. How many sealants can you place in a single setting?

All joking aside, Frank waxes poetic on predictability and finding your happy place in dentistry. Being the decathlon dentist isn't for Frank. He likes to crush on things he's great at.

Per usual, Frank brings the funny, but we also coerce him into giving some actual clinical tips with products and stuff on high speed crowns.

Very Dental Extra: The Advantages of an Invisible DSO with Chip Fichtner of Large Practice Sales Oct 07, 2023

Show notes

"One of the key attributes of an invisible DSO is the doctor is still an owner and therefore continues to lead the practice as an owner. He's making all of the crucial decisions...not the DSO."

Chip Fichtner, Large Practice Sales

Alan is joined again by Chip Fichtner of Large Practice Sales to talk about an interesting practice model called "Invisible Dental Support Organization."

We drill down on the concept and how it differs from a more traditional group/multiple practice as well as a traditional DSO.

Does an invisible DSO sound like something that would be a good fit for you? Get in touch with Chip at Large Practice Sales!

Group Function: Dentistry's Self Regulation Problem with Dr. Pam Maragliano-Muniz and Dr. David Rice Oct 06, 2023

Show notes

Alan had a chance to be on the new "Dentistry Unmasked" podcast with hosts Dr. Pam Maragliano-Muniz and Dr. David Rice a couple weeks ago. It was a great conversation that spent time talking about something that we generally don't want to talk about. Dentistry has a problem with bad actors. We're supposed to be "self policing," but honestly...we're not great at it. This conversation breaks that problem open and talks about it. Do we have all the answers? Not really. But it's a discussion we need to have.
