    107 - Scaling Public Blockchains - Challenges and Solutions Dec 01, 2021
    Show notes

This episode was originally published on March 11, 2021
In this episode of The Unstoppable Podcast, our CEO and co-founder Matthew Gould talks all about scaling on public blockchains.

How can we scale blockchains so they can support ever greater numbers of transactions and functions without being crippled by huge fees and wait times? This has always been a big question in the blockchain space.

Matthew introduces some of the current problems, like gas prices. He shares ideas about how we might be able to scale blockchains without costs spiraling out of control. He also explains some concepts like zero-knowledge proofs, the Nakamoto consensus, and smart contract blockchains — and how all three of these have combined to make modern-day decentralization possible.

Some other ideas we touch on include state channels — a way to do lots more transactions while storing a lot less data, and side chains — a way to avoid high transaction fees or long waiting times when doing a lot of transactions. We also talk about some of the potential problems involved.

We discuss the growth of crypto, and what needs to come next to allow the widespread adoption of crypto by mainstream society. Gabriel talks about the best projects he has seen so far that combine NFTs with other elements of DeFi and crypto, and what he’d like to see more of in the future.

We talk about how to make NFTs work in Decentraland, and how they would work from a practical and logistical perspective. Then, Gabriel shares some of the Web 2.0 best practices for launching a startup that also apply to Web 3.0.

Finally, we discuss building and scaling communities in Web 3.0, and what makes them successful, along with the role of community managers. Gabriel shares some predictions about where the crypto space will be in ten years.

105 - Understanding the Scalability Issue of Blockchain Nov 17, 2021
    Show notes

This episode was originally published on March 4, 2021.

Scalability has always been a problem for decentralized networks. Ever since the early days of Bitcoin, people in the blockchain space have been grappling with the question of how to scale decentralized networks to handle more and more users.

In this episode of The Unstoppable Podcast, we talk to our CEO Matthew Gould about blockchain scaling. How do we improve the way we build on the blockchain so our networks can handle more activity and more transactions while supporting a wider range of activities?

Matthew explains the difference between Ethereum and Bitcoin in this context, and covers some common concepts like smart contracts and gas prices. He also talks about some of the advantages Ethereum has over Bitcoin when it comes to things like building apps and software functionality.

We also discuss some of the key challenges involved in building and scaling on the blockchain, why they exist, and some of the different types of solutions we can employ now and in the future.

102 - Tracking dApps on the Blockchain with Robert Hoogendoorn Oct 27, 2021
    Show notes

This episode was originally published on February 4, 2021.

Decentralized apps are one of the most exciting applications for blockchain technology. In this episode of the Unstoppable Podcast, we sit down with Robert Hoogendoorn, head of content at DappRadar, to talk about dApps.

We learn about how Robert discovered blockchain and crypto -- as a way to access money in foreign accounts when living abroad without punishing ATM fees -- and how it quickly became a subject of passion for him.

We talk about dApps (software written on top of the blockchain) and their many use cases, from everyday things like trading digital items to bigger concepts like freer sharing of information and democratizing of the online world.

Decentralized gaming is an extremely promising use case for blockchain, and Robert talks about how it’s been evolving and how there is still an unfortunate lack of information and resources about it online.

Robert finishes by talking about DappRadar -- a site that ranks dApps and where users can learn about them. He mentions some of the exciting new features on the way, like a portfolio tracker and NFT evaluation tool, and what users can expect from these.

You can follow Robert on LinkedIn, Medium, and Twitter, and learn more about DappRadar on their website.

100 - Writing About and Understanding Crypto with Jarrod Dicker of TCG Oct 20, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of The Unstoppable Podcast, we speak with Jarrod Dicker, a VC at TCG, about something both he and TCG are excited about: the intersection between consumers and crypto. We start by getting his reflections on his first learning experience in blockchain—a startup called Po.et that aimed to put digital content onto the blockchain. While he reflects that Po.et was probably too early to the market, Jarrod believes in consumers driving crypto, and that powers his work with TCG. We also get his perspective on digital ownership, tokens, and NFTs, and quiz him about his own DAO, Dark Star.

Part of why Jarrod has a media-focused DAO like Dark Star is his love for writing. Dark Star aims to be a constructive lens to think about where crypto is going, by looking at what it has done so far. Jarrod has a background in traditional media and knows how the real-world environment of a newsroom drives creativity, together with the ownership of multiple stakeholders in storytelling. He thinks this is an exciting direction for a media DAO to go in (and is part of why he loves pioneering it in Dark Star).

Throughout this conversation, Jarrod’s excitement for how the new consumer wave is going to change and shape what’s coming is infectious.

99 - Creating and Selling NFTs with Photographer Kristopher Shinn Oct 18, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of The Unstoppable Podcast, we chat with photographer Kristopher Shinn to get his perspective on the growth of NFTs. We start with his journey to photography (via music and drums) and learn how he was inspired by seeing other travel photographers to go on that same journey himself. We also get inside the process of making an NFT from start to finish, what platforms he uses to sell them (including pros and cons), and finish by talking about what the future of NFTs is, as well as sharing some of his fun tweets from an ever-growing Twitter following.

Kristopher has a focus on water in his photography, and a recent collection showcases his love of the ferry—which comes from using it so often and seeing people in their private worlds as they contemplate the beauty all around them.

One of his collections is shot entirely on film, which is a format he prefers to digital and he sees himself mostly shooting on film going forward. The process of how something shot on film becomes an NFT is not obvious and he explains his own process. At the same time, he also explains what an NFT is for those who are still unclear about it.

The path for artists is changing because of NFTs and Kristopher shares his perspective on two platforms he currently uses, Foundation and Opensea, and the pros and cons of both.

It’s one thing to read about NFTs in the news and it’s another to hear from someone actually working, making a living, and influencing in that space, and it’s wonderful to hear Kristopher share his knowledge and experience.

98 - Getting to know The Graph and eGirl Capital with Eva Beylin at the Graph Foundation Oct 15, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode of The Unstoppable Podcast, we speak with Eva Beylin, Director of The Graph Foundation. She explains how she got into crypto, what led her to Ethereum and The Graph Foundation, what The Graph does and is doing, and what she sees the Foundation doing in the near and medium term. We also chat with Eva about eGirl Capital, of which she is a founding member.

Eva speaks about her path into crypto after business school and management consulting for financial services companies. She sees that technology in its current form tends towards monopolization — and crypto is a cure for that. She knows that there are great financial rewards in crypto but is more philosophically involved: she likes the idea of decentralizing power and encouraging more people to participate.

Eva also speaks about what The Graph is (“the Google of blockchain,” she says), what its stakeholders are and their roles, and the importance of attracting non-technical people to the project as a whole.

In her role at The Graph Foundation, Eva is tasked with growing the ecosystem through grants and governance. She also shares the type of governance currently in use for the Foundation and how that relates to the way The Graph started: a hosted service, not a decentralized network, allowing for a lot of feedback as well as for devs to get used to the technology.

We finish by talking about eGirl Capital, one of Eva’s passion projects, of which she is a founding member. It’s a personal outgrowth of what she’s doing at The Graph Foundation, encouraging and curating good projects, but by putting her own skin in the game.
