One of the key priorities for any leader is the care of their team. The number one priority should be their team, the people they lead.
And sometimes caring for your team often gets misinterpreted. Some will define that as being soft as a leader, accepting of poor performance, accepting of poor behavior, not willing to partake in conflict or constructive constructions. Others take it to mean, they protect their team at all costs, even if their team is unproductive, unmotivated, or simple squeaky wheels. That’s not leadership.

Trust is the foundation of everything great in your life. It has long been acknowledged that trust is a critical component of leadership, business, and sales. It also plays a dominant role in marketing. The ability to build trust with others is a big factor for your success. Your inability to build trust will inhibit your results and outcomes.
Judith Glasser in Conversational Intelligence, speaks to the concept of trust and distrust. Her Trust Model (https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/conversational-intelligence/201606/go-the-distance-distrust-trust) and other brilliant leadership resources have been a gift. Unfortunately, Judith passed away in 2018 but leaves a legacy for all leaders.
While trust is part of the leadership language, the reality for some leaders is the navigation to create trust from a place of distrust. Many have found this challenging at best, and at worst impossible. Most leaders understand the importance to build trust, and a good percentage of them will have great intentions to do so. But when we have distrust, the underlying currency is cynicism and negativity.
Why is that?

Coaching has a large range of negative connotations.
Many people reject coaching as they believe it's a sign of weakness asking for help. They have a block of admitting others may be able to help. Others have built a negative tone, as their companies have used the word "coaching" when undertaking performance improvement programs. No one likes being in a PIP, and therefore when requested to sit in a coaching program, what they are interpreting is a counseling session
- Coaching is more performance-driven, designed to improve the professional’s on-the-job performance.
- Mentoring is more development-driven, looking not just at the professional’s current job function but beyond, taking a more holistic approach to career development.
