S1E108: Plane speaking: Is sustainable aviation fuel really green? Oct 01, 2023
    Show notes

Can sustainable aviation fuel help airlines rein in growing greenhouse gas emissions?

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Most of us enjoy flying, especially for that much-needed holiday break. But most of us also know that flying produces lots of greenhouse gas emissions and that taking plane trips can be the single biggest component of our carbon footprint each year.

Plane and engine manufacturers have been pretty good at achieving efficiency gains over the years. But international aviation is growing quickly. Without strong action, emissions from the sector will double or even triple by 2050.

One immediate solution being offered is sustainable aviation fuel or SAF for short. But how green is it?

In this episode, ST's climate editor David Fogarty chats with Mr Sami Jauhiainen, regional vice-president for renewable aviation at Neste, a Finnish refining company. It has recently expanded its operations in Singapore and is now a major producer of SAF.

    Highlights (click/tap above):

1:11 What is sustainable aviation fuel and how is it made?

4:14 Does Neste use any food crops to produce the fuel?

9:07 Current global demand for SAF

11:59 Environmental benefits and emissions reductions from using SAF

18:07 The current cost of SAF? How will the costs fall?

    Show notes

No matter how hard you work, there seems no end? Is this how millennials really feel?

Synopsis: Every first Monday of the month, listen to the Work Talk podcast to help you work smarter, think deeper and get ahead in your work life.

“When we were young, we were told that if you study hard, you are going to do very well in life. But after we have done that, we realised that actually, there's no end to this tunnel. We just have to keep going and going.”

ST's senior correspondent Krist Boo hosts Prof Chong and two of her peers: Mr Darryn Lim, 35, a communications leader at tech firm SAP and Mr Safafisalam Bohari Jaon, 27, a sustainability consultant at Eden Strategy Institute.

He recently released his fourth album, Self Soothing, featuring songs driven by the pursuit of inner peace and emotional stability.

Sezairi also sings a live and full intimate acoustic version of Daylight, a song from Self Soothing (link below to the separate clip).

S1E33: Possible end of BTO profit-flipping mentality: Youths, expert discuss Sep 24, 2023
    Show notes

Will new systemic changes make first-time couples adopt a new "forever home" mentality?

Synopsis: Every second and fourth Monday of the month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at Singapore's social issues of the day with guests.

The Forward Singapore exercise began in June 2022, and since then, many Singaporeans from all walks of life have taken part in engagement sessions on a wide range of topics, including housing. This is the third of four podcast discussions, and part of the ongoing conversation to refresh our social compact for the next lap of Singapore's journey.

At these Forward Singapore engagements, participants agreed that Singapore should continue to be an affordable home-owning society.

To get their reactions towards tighter restrictions and additional subsidies for new Plus and Prime flats, to start from the second half of 2024 under the recently-announced new classification for public housing, ST's podcast editor Ernest Luis hosts three guests in this episode:

    1. Mr Eden Soh, 28, a media producer who recently just paid his deposit for his Prime Location Housing flat in the south-western area
    2. Mr Asher Chua, 28, a sales executive who applied for BTO flats for a few years but has now bought a resale flat instead
    3. Ms Christine Sun, senior vice-president of research and analytics at OrangeTee & Tie

This podcast is brought to you by the Ministry of Communications and Information, in support of Forward Singapore: https://str.sg/wFbY

    Highlights (click/tap above):

3:35 Do youths like Mr Soh, and their peers, feel that public housing flats will probably not be as huge a "pot of gold" as it was seen previously?

5:25 Could the reclassification of flats mean a new reality for aspiring homeowners? Ms Sun on whether it could be the end of the "flipping-for-profit" mentality among young people?

8:15 Why Mr Chua chose a resale flat in the end

14:55 With the new classification of flats from the second half of 2024, what will be the impact on million-dollar public flats?

S1E101: US cements ties with India, Vietnam and why that matters Sep 21, 2023
    Show notes

Asia hosted recent multilateral meetings but it is the US' bilaterals with India and Vietnam that really matter.

Synopsis: Every fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents an Asian perspective of the biggest global talking points with expert guests.

The East Asia Summit in Jakarta, and the G20 in New Delhi, broadly solidified US relations in the region, but it is the bilaterals with India and Vietnam that really mattered.

The US was represented in Jakarta by Vice-President Kamala Harris. But the G20 saw President Joe Biden attending and supporting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s moment as global statesman in his role as chair of the grouping. In contrast, China’s President Xi Jinping was absent.

New Delhi also saw a reiteration of the increasingly close US-India relationship.

Of equal significance perhaps in terms of competition with China, was President Biden’s trip to Hanoi, Vietnam, where the two countries formally elevated their relationship.

To unpack the significance of these meetings, ST’s US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh hosts two guests in this episode:

    1. Ambassador Scot Marciel, the former US diplomat to Myanmar, Indonesia and Asean, who is now a senior advisor at Bower Group Asia

    2. Dr Lynn Kuok, Shangri-La Dialogue senior fellow for Asia-Pacific security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies

    Highlights (click/tap above):

3:40 Why the G20 cemented India’s image as a global diplomatic and strategic player

5:26 Why the so-called "double upgrade" of the US-Vietnam relationship is significant

6:18 Why Asean’s and the world’s approach to Myanmar has been flawed

11:08 Why the US focus should be a lot less on talking to South-east Asia about China, as the region already knows China well

14:35 Do US administrations really understand South-east Asia well enough and how to engage the region? Why Asean meetings are "not often satisfying" in terms of substance
