      • Also…“The process of Star Wars began way back in August of 2015 when I looked at what J.J. and Rian had done and I’m very fortunate that I’m surrounded by some really, really brilliant producers and brilliant creative minds – Kiri Hart and the Lucasfilm story group and my producer [Michelle] Rejwan and Kathy Kennedy and also J.J. and Rian, Larry Kasdan. I mean, these are the best minds available and everybody’s engaged in making sure this is the most satisfying and emotionally resonant conclusion that we can possibly deliver.”

        • She was a major character, that’s not a secret. She really was. And it was extremely sad for all of us, mostly just because she was so loved by the Star Wars family and everyone that worked with her. I feel like our options are limited mostly by ourselves, in that there is only certain things that we are willing to do. But I can guarantee it will be handle†d with love and respect, and all of the soul that Carrie Fisher deserves.

    • Vanity Fair photos from TLJ
      • Written by David Kamp
      • Photographer Annie Leibovitz
      • Part of what makes Lucasfilm’s new system work is that Kennedy has set up a formidable support structure for her filmmakers. Upon her arrival, she put together a story department at Lucasfilm’s San Francisco headquarters, overseen by Kiri Hart, a development executive and former screenwriter she has long worked with. The story group, which numbers 11 people, maintains the narrative continuity and integrity of all the Star Wars properties that exist across various platforms: animation, video games, novels, comic books, and, most important, movies. “The whole team reads each draft of the screenplay as it evolves,” Hart explained to me, “and we try, as much as we can, to smooth out anything that isn’t connecting.”
      • What the story group does not do, Hart said, is impose plot-point mandates on the filmmakers. Johnson told me he was surprised at how much leeway he was given to cook up the action of Episode VIII from scratch. “The pre-set was Episode VII, and that was kind of it,” he said. If anything, Johnson wanted more give-and-take with the Lucasfilm team, so he moved up to San Francisco for about six weeks during his writing process, taking an office two doors down from Hart’s and meeting with the full group twice a week.
      • Among Johnson’s inventions for The Last Jedi are three significant new figures: a “shady character” of unclear allegiances, played by Benicio Del Toro, who goes unnamed in the film but is called DJ by the filmmakers (“You’ll see—there’s a reason why we call him DJ,” Johnson said); a prominent officer in the Resistance named Vice Admiral Holdo, played by Laura Dern; and a maintenance worker for the Resistance named Rose Tico, who is played by a young actress named Kelly Marie Tran (and who is the sister of Paige, the character witnessed in the scene with Poe Dameron). Tran’s is the largest new part, and her plotline involves a mission behind enemy lines with Boyega’s Finn, the stormtrooper turned Resistance warrior.
      • Rose and Finn’s adventure takes them to, among other places, another Johnson innovation: a glittering casino city called Canto Bight, “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief,” the director said.
    • John Boyega says Finn is a ‘Big Deal’ (ew.com)
      • Boyega: “The funny thing is, between VII and VIII, Finn’s now a big deal! He is now a big deal. Imagine that – you get taken down by Kylo Ren,” Boyega told us at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida. “Think about what the gossip’s going to be like in the Resistance. ‘Oh, that’s the guy that got slashed down by Kylo?’”
      • Boyega breaks into a grinning stride, winking and waving at imaginary Resistance fighters. “‘How you doing, guys? How you doing? Yeah, I was there. Then the Falcon picked me up… Oh yeah, I knew Han Solo by the way. We were pretty close.’ All that kind of stuff. They have a fan moment when they see him.”
      • Boyega can’t resist saying it again: “Finn’s a big deal.”
      • Boyega: “Finn’s in a bad way at the end of VII. He has a lot of issues. He got slashed with a saber, and that took him down real hard, so he’s in a coma,” the actor says. “That suit, that whole thing helps him to recover. But we’re not sure whether that means he’ll wake up.”
      • Recovering from a lightsaber wound is a more arduous process than most other injuries.
      • “Once it’s in, it continues to burn the skin and the cells. It’s not a piece of flame that whacks your body. It’s not something that works like a stab wound. It’s really brutal,” the actor says.
      • While Daisy Ridley’s Rey is training with Luke Skywalker, Finn is off on a separate quest with newcomer Kelly Marie Tran, who plays the Resistance mechanic Rose Tico.
    • Oscar Isaac talks fondly about Carrie Fisher (ew.com)
      • From The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (2;49 into interview)
      • Audio clip
      • Transcript from clip: Actually, a large amount of the stuff I got to do was with Carrie, which was amazing,” Isaac, who plays Rebel pilot Poe Dameron, began. “I remember the first day of shooting was a scene with Carrie. I’m still… often times that first day, the filmmaker’s, everybody’s trying to get the tone and figure it out and I remember it was a scene where I come up and talk to her and she’s very upset with me and slaps me, and [director] Rian [Johnson] kept doing it over and over … It ended up being like 27 takes of Carrie just leaning in and every time she’d hit like a different spot on my face.”“She was by far the quickest-witted, funniest, most down-to-earth, real human being as I ever had the opportunity of working with and she does amazing work in this,” Isaac said. “It was definitely a heartbreaker.”

    • Padme almost killed Anakin in ROTS (express.co.uk)
      • Padme Amidala spent much of the closing act of Episode III heartbroken, crying and being choked before her untimely death in childbirth.
      • Star Wars creative legend Iain McCaig is the man who designed the characters of Padme and Darth Maul and he revealed his heartbreak at how much was changed from the original script he helped craft with his team.
      • McCaig also told a packed auditorium at The Academy of Art University how Padme was originally going to be far more instrumental in creating the rebel resistance that her daughter Leia would one day lead.
      • Originally, he revealed, Padme was plotting behind Anakin’s back long before her tragic end.
      • He said: “All those love scenes, all those great scenes expressing great love in awkward ways and then he leaves. Moments later, in come the separatists and right behind his back she’s starting the rebellion to overthrow him, because Padme can see he’s becoming a monster.”
      • At the end, Mustafar, when she goes to see him she has a knife in her hands. “She gets off that ship with that knife. She runs up, throws her arms around him. He lets her. She’s got the knife at his neck, she’s going to kill him. He lets her. And she can’t do it. She loves him too much to stop him even though he’s become a monster.
      • “Enter Obi-Wan. Anakin freaks out, kills Padme, well almost. Wouldn’t that have been good?”
      • McCaig explained that Lucas famously demanded that the films were storyboarded with concept art long before he delivered a script.
      • McCaig told the crowd that his art department created a wall covered with art for the the storyboards and Lucas would approve or reject ideas until there was a final story and script for The Revenge of the Sith.
      • He added: “Unfortunately it was not the script that was eventually shot. There were things left out that broke my heart.”Screen-Shot-2017-04-21-at-3.24.30-PM
    • Marvel announced the upcoming Darth Vader: Year One series to roll out June 7th. It will be helmed by Writer Charles Soule (who did the Poe Dameron comic) and Artist Giuseppe Camuncoli (Amazing Spider-man) on the interior artwork. The comic picks up right where ROTS left off right after Vader yells, “nooooo!” with him now accusing Palpatine with another controlled “No!”
    • “Could ‘Star Wars Detours’ Finally Be Released Via New Disney Digital Networks?”
      • Last week, we mentioned that a new series called Science and Star Wars is coming to the new Disney Digital Network. Justin LaSalata of JediNews.co.uk asks if this means we could finally see the release of Star Wars Detours.
    • “Kylo” is the fastest-rising boys’ name in 2016!
      • Babynamewizard.com: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered at the end of 2015, and its baby name impact reverberated through the following year. Lots of force-ful names like Rey, Finn and even Jedi saw popularity spikes. But America’s biggest zero-to-60 breakout name was Kylo, as in dark side bigwig Kylo Ren.”
      • According to the Social Security Administration, 238 people named their sons Kylo in 2016, and is ranked at 901 on the top 1,000 list.

      • Disney and Lucasfilm announced May 24, 2019…directed by Colin Trevorrow.
      • Also, the fifth Indiana Jones movie is confirmed for July 10, 2020 with Spielberg and Ford.
    • Entertainment Weekly has a video about the 5 things we know about The Last Jedi
      • #1 – A brand new character! Kelly Marie Tran will play Rose, a Resistance mechanic, who will potentially be paired up with Finn as he recovers from a debilitating lightsaber injury.
      • #2 – There’s a new planet in the film! The name of the world is Crait according to director Rian Johnson. “It’s way out there. It’s very remote. It’s uncharted. It’s a mineral planet and so there are mines on it.” It’s also the home of an abandoned Rebel base.
      • #3 – There will be some new vehicles. These new starships are reminiscent of B-wings, first seen in Return of the Jedi, as well as in Star Wars: Rebels.
      • #4 – We learn more about Luke’s decision to flee. Johnson said the movie will explain why Luke’s decision to flee and isolate himself was the right one, and not an act of cowardice.
      • #5 – The Last Jedi doesn’t refer to Luke! It turns out the title The Last Jedi does not refer to him, does not indicate Rey, but it is instead Luke’s mournful pledge to end the mystical order.
    • Blue Milk ingredients are now canon! (starwars.com)
      • Blue Milk
        • Ingredients:
        • 1-1/2 cups whole milk

        • ½ teaspoon vanilla
        • blue food gel dye
        • Stir together the milk, sugar, and vanilla.

    • EW: The Last Jedi director asked for a droid swap in The Force Awakens
      • Johnson already had a to-do list for the Force once it awakened, and he was involved early enough to know exactly where Abrams and co-screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan were taking things. But when he saw the planned ending — that silent scene of Rey returning an exiled Luke Skywalker’s first lightsaber to him — he had a concern about who was accompanying her on that journey.
      • His request will end up returning a long-beloved Star Wars figure to the center of the action: R2-D2. “Yes … The big [favor] was, I asked if R2 could come with Rey, and if BB-8 could stay behind with the Resistance,” Johnson says. “Originally it was BB-8 who went with Rey, which makes sense for the story in a way. But I asked, ‘Can you do me this solid and switch the droids?’”
