    • The biggest mystery of Return of the Jedi: Where or how did Leia get that dress from the Ewoks? (PlutoTV)
      • While Forces of Destiny explains WHO she got the dress from– it still doesn’t answer where the DRESS came from…
    • Disney is launching it’s own streaming service…pulling out of Netflix deal (insidethemagic.net)
      • The Disney-branded direct-to-consumer streaming service will launch some time in 2019 and will become the exclusive home in the U.S. for on-demand viewing of the latest live-action and animated Disney and Pixar films. As a result, Disney will end its distribution agreement with Netflix at the start of 2019.
      • It is yet unclear as to how Marvel and Lucasfilm products will be affected by this shift in strategy. As of right now, Disney has only committed to Disney and Pixar films being a part of this new service. Iger mentioned that there has been talk of creating separate services for Marvel and Lucasfilm, but the amount of content is a concern there. They have also considered including the two properties in the already announced service. Disney will announce their decision on that situation at a later date.
      • UPDATE TODAY: Netflix’s relationship with Disney hasn’t been severed just yet. In an interview with Reuters, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that the streamer is still in “active discussions” regarding a deal for Marvel or Lucasfilm titles. (CynopsisDigital)

    • Clint Howard will probably be in untitled Han Solo movie
    • John Boyega talks to Entertainment Weekly about having different directors for each Star Wars movie. (ew.com by Dalton Ross)
      • Boyega thinks having a different director on each of the new episodes is the perfect way to keep the franchise fresh 40 years in and counting. “What people fail to understand sometimes is that the success of these stories that will stay with us long-term is to bring new ideas, is to expand the universe. So we can have new stories, new people, just a different perspective is awesome. [Rian] had a chance to really go crazy, and I’m a big Star Wars buff so certain things I saw I was just like ‘Well, that’s a first.’ And that, for me, is really cool to experience.”
    • John Boyega tells ABC News that Carrie Fisher gets a send off in TLJ in “an amazing way”
      • The Hollywood Reporter reports there is a new writer for Episode IX
      • Jack Thorne, the British scribe who wrote the upcoming Julia Roberts-Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder, has been tapped to work on the Star Wars installment that is to be directed by Colin Trevorrow.
      • Trevorrow and his writing partner, Derek Connolly, have been working on the script, but sources say a fresh set of eyes was needed. It is unclear how extensive the rewrites will be.

    • Rian Johnson reveals one word from the crawl of TLJ (latimes.com)
      • But was there a particular phrase or word he was most proud to sneak into the first moments of “The Last Jedi”?
      • “It would be funny if it was ‘poop,’” he said with a grin. “Which is a first for the ‘Star Wars’ universe. That’s the whole crawl, just the word ‘poop.’
      • Then he answered seriously, turning to the side to avoid being caught on camera mouthing even one word from the highly secretive script
      • “Decimated,” he said, and he looked quite proud.
    • From SDCC panel, new Star Wars novels tie into TLJ (ew.com)
    • Andrew Sugerman, executive vice president of Disney’s publishing and digital media: “There’s one shared universe, so the films connect to the games, which connect to the books, which connect to the animation, and so on. A story told through publishing enriches the larger universe.”
    • YA books reveal backstories for classic characters like Leia Organa and Luke Skywalker in their younger days while also containing details and motivations that will turn up in the new film.
    • The previous “Journey to The Force Awakens” book series had to avoid discussing Skywalker for the most part, preserving his mystery. Now that he has been found, a new collection of interlocked short stories will unlock parts of his past we don’t know.
    • Dave Filoni tweets that Ahsoka and Kanan knew each other as younglings

    • Radio Flyer Landspeeder exclusively at Toys R Us (commercial)

The Legends of Luke Skywalker by Ken Liu (Oct. 31)

    • Michael Siglain, creative director of Lucasfilm Publishing: “You know how Han Solo says, ‘It’s true, all of it’? Well, was it really?”
    • This book by Ken Liu presents its stories as rumors circulating through the galaxy. Then Liu unspools six different stories, including a first-person account (told second-hand) about a flea-like alien who claimed to be on Luke’s shoulder during some critical history.
    • “It’s a mole-flea named Lugubrious Mote that is present during the time of Luke’s interactions with Jabba, including his battle with the Rancor and the fight on the sail barge,” Siglain says. “The mole-flea is not present in The Last Jedi, nor on the ship to Canto Bight, though he does help to illustrate Yoda’s point that ‘size matters not.’”

Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray (Sept. 1)

    • This book takes Star Wars fans back to when she was a teenager, not yet a revolutionary.
    • It will reveal Leia’s rise to power by showing how she first became an agent for the Rebellion — not long before we see her escape with the stolen Death Star plans in Rogue One.
    • It’s set on the eve of her 16th birthday.
    • Siglain: “She decides to become involved in the fight against the Empire, regardless of what her parents think.”

Phasma by Delilah S. Dawson (Sept, 1)

    • She does have a secret in her past that she guards. And when that secret is threatened to be revealed, what will she do to keep that secret hidden?
    • Siglain: “You will be afraid of this character. You will know why she is a captain in the First Order.”
    • Siglain: This novel will “show how she got off the planet that she was on initially and came to the First Order and what did she have to do to get there and what will she do to protect her secrets.”

Canto Bight by Saladin Ahmed, Rae Carson, Mira Grant, John Jackson Miller (Dec. 5)

    • Four short stories will focus on creatures from the glamorous casino world of Canto Bight, described as the galactic version of Monaco.
    • Siglain: “It’s a city filled with opportunity. There are very high stakes in this city. You’re going to follow four different aliens who will lead you through some of the gambling parlors and the racetracks and, you know, just this beautiful, lush city that’s as far from the Episode IV cantina as you can get.”

    Star Wars Made Easy

    • This guide by former EW writer Christian Blauvelt is meant as a primer for little kids.
    • Siglain: “Years ago, I went to a bookstore, and I was looking for a book to give to my wife to kind of get her up to speed. She had seen all the movies and stuff, but she didn’t know all of the lore, and some of it could be confusing. What was from Episode II, what was from Episode III?”

    • Pablo Hidalgo tweets about the “dreaded C-word”PabloCanon
      • A round of tweets got things going. (July 2)
        • Against my better judgment, about to start a few tweets about the dreaded C-word, canon. But first, one ground rule. This is just my opinion
        • Just my own ideas about it. It is not reflective of any company policy. It’s not a commandment. It’s not a rule. Just an observation.
        • On occasion when asked about something specific, I’ll answer, ‘Canon doesn’t split those hairs.’ What do I mean by that?
        • It means it’s a detail that isn’t catalogued. It’s an increment beneath notice. And stuff like that typically means artifacts of the medium.
        • So, I don’t see there being such a thing as ‘canon dialog’. Because a comic, novel, cartoon, live action version of an event will differ. It’s my way of dodging the who-shot-first horse carcass.
        • All that’s canon is that two people entered that booth, & Greedo died. Reports vary.
      • Follow-up Tweet July 4th :
        • This is all I was trying to say: There are some things canon doesn’t account for, namely the artifacts that come as a result of the medium.
    • What does Fan Hyper-activity look like?
    • What matters to fans defers from fan to fan; case in point, some worry about scars, some worry about styles and mediums. Some don’t worry at all.19787104_1388721654569230_8445253066951333867_o

    • More insight behind the Phil Lord & Chris Miller exit (hollywoodreporter.com)
      • [Lord & Miller] were in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon but didn’t start shooting until 1 p.m. That day the two used only three different setups – that is, three variations on camera placement – as opposed to the 12 to 15 that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had expected, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Not only was the going slow, but the few angles that had been shot did not provide a wealth of options to use in editing the movie.
      • Meanwhile, Lord and Miller, the exceptionally successful team behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, were chafing, too, according to a source close to them. There were “deep fundamental philosophical differences” in filmmaking styles, this person says, and the directors felt they were being given “zero creative freedom.” They also felt they were being asked to operate under “extreme scheduling constraints” and “were never given enough days for each scene from the very beginning.”
      • Shortly after the shoot in the Millennium Falcon, on June 20, the world learned that Kennedy – with the backing of Disney studio chief Alan Horn – had taken the extraordinary step of firing Lord and Miller.
      • Some insiders say that while the talent of Lord and Miller is undeniable, nothing in their background prepared them for a movie of this size and scope. These sources say they relied too heavily on the improvisational style that served them so well in live-action comedy and animation but does not work on a set with hundreds of crewmembers waiting for direction.
      • And an editor was fired earlier and an acting coach was hired for Alden
      • Matters were coming to a head in May as the production moved from London to the Canary Islands. Lucasfilm replaced editor Chris Dickens (Macbeth) with Oscar-winner Pietro Scalia, a veteran of Ridley Scott films including Alien: Covenant and The Martian. And, not entirely satisfied with the performance that the directors were eliciting from Alden Ehrenreich, Lucasfilm decided to bring in an acting coach. (Hiring a coach is not unusual; hiring one that late in production is.)

      • “Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
      • “Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
      • Lucasfilm says the movie will remain on course for a May 2018 release.
    • Director Ron Howard is in! (hollywoodreporter.com)
      • Announces Thursday, June 22
      • Howard, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, will meet with the actors — Alden Ehrenreich is playing the iconic smuggler, Donald Glover is playing Lando Calrissian, with Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke and Thandie Newton also on the roll call — to soothe a rattled set and will pore over a rough edit to see what the project has and still needs.

      • Negative reviews of Trevorrow’s The Book of Henry (22% on Rotten Tomatoes) has fans concerned that he could be dropped from Episode IX (screenrant.com)
