    The Stacking Benjamins Show

Named Best Personal Finance Podcast by Bankrate.com and Kiplinger — and the only podcast the Plutus Awards retired from competition after winning twice — The Stacking Benjamins Show is personal finance that doesn’t put you to sleep.

Hosts Joe Saul-Sehy (former 16-year financial advisor, ex-WXYZ-TV “Money Man”) and Josh “OG” Bannerman, CFP (Certified Financial Planner, Bannerman Wealth) sit around the card table in Joe’s mom’s half-finished basement in Texarkana and talk money with the smartest guests in personal finance, investing, and behavioral economics. As Fast Company wrote, the show “strikes a great balance of fun and functional.”

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: expert guests, real headlines, listener questions, and Doug’s trivia. Topics include investing, retirement planning, budgeting, real estate, behavioral finance, taxes, and financial independence — for anyone who wants to be smarter about money without being talked down to.

Our Favorite Budget and Money Hacks (with Chris Hutchins) Jul 02, 2021
    Show notes

Ever wish that saving money and spending less were easier? Today we've got your back because Chris Hutchins, Mr. Hack himself and host of the All The Hacks podcast, joins us to discuss a delicious list pulled from the popular Inspired Budget blog that lists a whopping 30 money hacks you should try in 2021. What hacks do you love that are missing from this list? On today's show recorded live on the new Fireside app, we're joined not only by Chris Hutchins but also Paula Pant (Afford Anything podcast) and Len Penzo (Len Penzo dot com) as they dive into their favorites (and also skewer one or two that they aren't as fond of). At the end of the discussion we'll ditch the list and this crack team will even add a few of their own.

Before we're done we'll also magnify Tom's money, who asks what we think about popular trading app Robinhood. You know us...this is going to be good! And of course we can't forget about Doug's trivia! He has a heart-wrenching question today. Literally.

    Enjoy!

Making Money While You Sleep (with Alan Corey), plus Crypto in Your 401k? Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

Alan Corey had a small goal: he just wanted to pay his internet bill automatically, and in the process stumbled upon a strategy that would lead him to wealth in real estate at an early age. Today he joins us to share his journey to financial independence, from moving to NYC and realizing he couldn't control his income in the corporate world, to purchasing real estate with a goal of purchasing one property a year for five years. Fast forward and he's now buying five properties in a month! His unique thought process of using rental income to offset fixed costs in his life helped propel his real estate success. You'll also never guess who he sold his first property to in NYC!

For our headline, we'll look at a piece from Morningstar that talks about cryptocurrency in retirement plans. Would you want the option to invest in crypto in your 401k? We'll share the results of the survey and you might be surprised by the results.

We'll also throw out the Haven Life line to Bill who has questions about rebalancing his portfolio. And of course we'll also throw in some of Doug's trivia.

    Show notes

What does it take to reach your goals? Here in the middle of NHL and NBA playoff season, we're going to talk about reaching your big goals. Today's guest, Stu Grimson, had to take a roundabout way to his big goals, and today he'll talk about life as an "enforcer" during his 14-year professional hockey career. While he didn't score a lot of goals, he certainly scored a great career, and we'll dive into the sometimes winding road to success, the importance of good coaching, and not relying on managers or trainers to get you ready for your life's "big game."

Have you thought about your estate plan? Or finished your "what if" planning? Our headline looks at the tragic accident last week of Alex Harvill who died while attempting a record-breaking motorcycle jump. It's the grim reminder that we all need to plan for tomorrow, today.

Of course, we'll also throw out the Haven Life line to a member of our basement Facebook group who wants to know the do's and don'ts of being a landlord. What would we advise him to beware of? Believe it or not, we'll share our opinion! And that's not all. We'll also share some of Doug's trivia.

Of course, we'll also throw out the Haven Life line to a lucky caller wants to stir the index funds and passive investing pot. Could indexing be worse than Marxism? And that's not all. Of course, we'll also share some of Doug's trivia.

Why We Want MORE (with Luke Burgis) plus "Sell in May and Go Away?" Jun 16, 2021
    Show notes

Why do we always seem to have something else we're chasing? Another possession, more stuff, the next token for our treasure trove...where does it end? Today we'll dive into the "why" behind your desires with Luke Burgis, who's deeply studied the philosophy of wanting, and will help you short-circuit some of the self-destructive behaviors in our life that make us believe the more equals better.

During our headlines segment, have you heard the phrase “sell in May and go away?” Sounds a bit like market timing, doesn’t it? We’ll hear what the market did last month and help you understand the impacts of this strategy. Plus, we'll dial up Matt Komos on Joe's dad's shortwave radio. He's the Vice President of Research and Consulting at TransUnion, and has some good news about consumer credit trends over the last year. Unemployment spiked in April of 2020 as the COVID pandemic began and Matt dives into how consumer credit cards, mortgages, and auto loans have all been impacted.

Of course, we'll also throw out the Haven Life line to a lucky caller who's wondering about life insurance for her children. We might have a strong opinion or two on that topic. Of course, we'll also share some of Doug's trivia goodness.

Decoding Greatness, Lowering Fees, and Relief Money (with Dr. Ron Friedman) Jun 14, 2021
    Show notes

How do the best achieve superior results? Do they work 10,000 hours? Do they spend years sharpening the saw? While it takes work and grit, the type of work achievers focus on may surprise you. We'll dive into the science of greatness with Dr. Ron Friedman, author of the new bestseller Decoding Greatness. It's a wide-ranging discussion that will change the way you think about your career, your goals, and how you spend your time.

During our headlines segment, we'll share a sad statistic about COVID and government benefits. It turns out that LOTS of people who are eligible for help aren't applying for it. We'll share some ideas that will hopefully help you find money if you need it. Of course, it's Monday, so that means we'll also share a TikTok video from a brilliant creator who shares some amazing (maybe too amazing) math about AMC stock.

Of course, we'll also throw out the Haven Life line to a lucky caller who's worried about fees in his portfolio, AND we'll share some of Doug's monkey business called "trivia."

Things You Should NOT Do With Money (plus our July scholarship update) Jun 11, 2021
    Show notes

What are you doing with your cash that's a complete "no-no"? Today we'll dive into some things that you should NEVER do with your money. We'll talk about banks, life insurance, debt products and also maybe advice that you find from online blogs. To help us, today we welcome the host of the Nurses on FIRE podcast, Naseema McElroy. She'll be joined by award winning blogger Len Penzo (LenPenzo.com), and our very own OG (other guy).

July is a huge month for private scholarships. We'll detail ALL of the things that students need to do right now to make college easier. We'll share tips for existing college students, high school students, and even younger kids. Our doors are opening again (I know we already have many people on our wait list for this session....) for a short time, so check out StackingBenjamins.com/Scholarships.

On our MagnifyMoney segment, Matt's spouse works for someone else and he's convinced she'd be better off self employed. What does she need to know to make the move? How can he help her see beyond the riskiness of not having a consistent paycheck from another employer? Naseema, OG and Len will all dive into this question.

Of course, we'll also celebrate National Corn Day with Doug's amazing trivia challenge. Which of our panelists will be closest to the answer? You'll have to listen to find out.
