    The Stacking Benjamins Show

Named Best Personal Finance Podcast by Bankrate.com and Kiplinger — and the only podcast the Plutus Awards retired from competition after winning twice — The Stacking Benjamins Show is personal finance that doesn’t put you to sleep.

Hosts Joe Saul-Sehy (former 16-year financial advisor, ex-WXYZ-TV “Money Man”) and Josh “OG” Bannerman, CFP (Certified Financial Planner, Bannerman Wealth) sit around the card table in Joe’s mom’s half-finished basement in Texarkana and talk money with the smartest guests in personal finance, investing, and behavioral economics. As Fast Company wrote, the show “strikes a great balance of fun and functional.”

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: expert guests, real headlines, listener questions, and Doug’s trivia. Topics include investing, retirement planning, budgeting, real estate, behavioral finance, taxes, and financial independence — for anyone who wants to be smarter about money without being talked down to.

How Will You Create “The Best Days of Your Life”? (SB1430) Nov 03, 2023
    Show notes

At what age do you think will be the best days of your life? How do changing priorities impact how you view happiness? What role does stress play in detracting from the best days? What role do finances and financial independence play in happiness? Today's special roundtable discussion is all about the evolution of life satisfaction and the best days of your life — and how your happiness changes as your age progresses. What about the impact that having children has on your happiness? Joining us for this important roundtable discussion, we're proud to welcome the co-host of the How to Money podcast, Joel Larsgaard. He joins Afford Anything's Paula Pant and our very own OG as they offer their opinions and experiences on how the best days of our life and satisfaction change as we age.

In the second half of the discussion, sponsored by DepositAccounts.com, our panelists share their thoughts on whether we should focus on achieving financial independence faster in order to the best days of our life quicker? We also discuss how taking an optimistic outlook may benefit you in the long run.

Be sure to stay for this week's edition of our year-long trivia contest. Doug breaks out the way back machine and has some 90s pop music-themed trivia. Does that spell certain doom for Paula? Will she or OG break their current tie and join Len in first place? Or will Joel make Len proud and increase his lead?

    Show notes

What keeps YOU up at night? We asked an All-Star panel that you can only put together at a big conference like FinCon...and today we do just that. We're recording LIVE from the moomoo podcast booth at FinCon 2023 with Rob Berger (Rob Berger YouTube channel), Nick Loper (Side Hustle Nation), and Paula Pant (Afford Anything), to ask them what THEIR audiences are worried about right now. Man, did we get an earful. From rising interest rates to uncertain retirement conditions, to the world of work changing around us because of AI and more, we work through MANY of the big issues people are facing in 2023 and often come up with solutions to help relieve those fears.

It's a special episode of Stacking Benjamins, without our usual segments (only the trivia remains...and Doug brings us a GREAT one today). Enjoy!

Fixing a Toxic Walk Toward Financial Independence (with the FIoneers) Oct 30, 2023
    Show notes

Financial independence. It's often presented by writers as the place dreams are made of. You've reached this magical place called "enough" and now life is all unicorns and rainbows. But what happens when you realize that the march toward shoveling everything toward an uncertain future is creating a horrible existence TODAY? That's what happened to Jess, one half of the Plutus Award winning coaching team The FIoneers. Jess and Corey came by Joe's mom's basement to tell the tale of their "a-ha" moment that led them to reject shoveling tons of cash from a hated job toward an early retirement...and maybe an early grave.

Before that we celebrate our Halloween-kickoff episode with a visit from financial columnist and the host of the Money Life podcast, Chuck Jaffe. Chuck orchestrates an awesome, interesting, and always-changing economics game every Halloween with the trick-or-treat'ers who come by his home. What's the game this year? He'll share what he's planning, and hopefully inspire you to find clever ways to teach kids some money or economic lessons.

Of course we also throw out the Haven Life line (this time all the way to India!), and Doug regales us with his mind-bending trivia.

It's a Halloween party in the basement! Hope you can join us.

    Stop Pressing Life's Easy Button (SB1427) Oct 27, 2023
    Show notes

Les Brown, no stranger to hard work and the resulting success it brings, famously said, “Do what is easy, and your life will be hard. Do what is hard, and your life will become easy.” Does the secret to creating an easy life lie in doing hard work first? How much of what seems easy from the outside looking in is actually the result of hours of hard work that was put in beforehand? Joining Joe for a special roundtable discussion that centers around how to do the hard things in order to create an easier life going forward are three people who are no strangers to doing the hard work: Roger Whitney, the Retirement Answer Man; Carl Jensen, creator of the 1500 Days to Freedom blog; and Paula Pant, host and creator of the award-winning Afford Anything podcast and blog. They dive into the complex relationship between hard work and an easy life and offer some gems for Stackers to take away.

In the second half of our show, sponsored by DepositAccounts.com, we discuss some hard work life skills and money skills that you can tackle today that will help you out financially in the future.

Be sure to stick around for our resident hard work expert Doug's astrological-themed trivia! Will either of our two guest contributors pull out the W and Len or OG benefit from their hard work, or will our regular contributor Paula continue her late season charge for our spectacular dollar store trophy?

Life Advice From a Top American Entrepreneur - Panera Founder Ron Shaich (SB1426) Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

Want to know how to stack AND enjoy more Benjamins? Us too! That's why we like taking life advice from the right people. In our minds, Ron Shaich, founder and former CEO of Panera Bread joins us to talk about living a life of service. Ron's had a full life, making money quickly but still working. How come? It turns out, Ron's best life advice revolves around how to live with meaning, rather than chasing money. We talk about his early days with the company, reinventing Panera before it was broken, and coming back out of "retirement" four times to pursue the next phase of running the business he loves.

Speaking of life advice...one crypto trader could use some. Mom always said "measure twice and cut once" when doing anything. This trader lost OVER one hundred thousand dollars on a trade recently. We'll share how and what life advice this may mean for you! (There's plenty).

Of course, we still throw out the Haven Life Line to a lucky listener and also dive into some of Doug's juicy trivia.

Stumbling Toward -- and achieving -- Your Goals (Live from Bali!) SB1422 Oct 16, 2023
    Show notes

Ever think that you aren't sure where you're headed with your money? Today we talk to TWO guests who began experimenting and found themselves much more prepared for the future than they'd thought. First, Annie decided it was time to experiment with "van life" during the pandemic. Her goal? To see if living and working from anywhere was actually viable. She'll share her stories, including what worked, what didn't and what she thinks about trying again long term. Plus, Tonia shares her story of how she realized she could actually quit her job! That was a welcome shock and now she shares what it's going to take for her to jump off the employment treadmill and into a new life. Think that's awesome? We're also joined by special guest co-host Becky Heptig, who along with her husband Stephen retired at 60 after only beginning the journey toward financial independence ten years earlier! She's the co-host of the hot new podcast "Catching Up To Fi," and she helps steer this ship today!

Welcome to a very special edition of Stacking Benjamins! On today's show, LIVE from Bali, Indonesia, Joe shares interviews and stories with a live audience at Amy Minkley's FI Freedom Retreat, where he was a keynote speaker. Not only does Becky Heptig from the Catching up to FI Podcast co-host, but she also shares her and her husband's success story about how they achieved financial independence in a relatively short time, starting from zero at the age of 50.

Joe's interview with attendee Annie is an eye-opening look at just how different financial independence can look for different people, with Annie's path fully embracing the location independence through #VanLife. Could camping, vagabonding, and generally roughing it be right for your financial independence? Annie shares the pros and cons of adopting this lifestyle.

Joe also sat down to talk with Tonia, who's story about how she unknowingly stumbled her way to financial independence hopefully will help you realize that maybe you're closer than you think to success! Learn from Tonia how to make the right moves to secure your financial independence by starting early.

Stick around when Doug calls in some Bali-related trivia.
