Michael Akira West - Founder of 686 - Episode 116

Michael Akira West started Jib 686 Enterprises in 1992 as a college project. Influenced by the early skate culture in SoCal and the Big Bear snowboard scene Mike launched a small collection of denim, technical outerwear, and accessories and never looked back. In 1995 Jib 686 became just 686 and that's when Mike launched the Smarty 3-in-1 layering system spawning more than two decades of innovation in snowboarding outerwear.

We stopped by their headquarters in Compton, CA. to talk with Mike about what it takes to start a company and grow it into one of snowboarding's powerhouses, the business philosophy of Kaizen, and the importance of cultural influence in product design.

It's still Springtime in New Zealand

It's springtime in new zealand - snowboard pro camps made a trip and rode the small and medium features and spring in the southern hemisphere is just like the spring in the north - its all about park laps.

Mt. Hutt, the Remarkables and cardrona as well as a handful of club fields are still open as the season winds down.

    RUKA FINLAND

Now up north to Ruka in Finland - the first resort in the world to open this season.

Currently they have 2 of their 30 'Alpine' runs open (and 98.8 miles of nordic trails) and 3 lifts operating. They currently have a base of 8" of frozen granular - aka a majority of man made snow.

Let's go to Colorado. Colorado Traction Law - new law requires special M+S designated tires, snows, or chains from denver through Vail September through May - Denver to Gypsum (aka through Vail).

Buzzin off Corona, buzzin off vodka tonics. They had a hotel room party. It was three dudes dancing and one girl hanging out on a bed. Fear and loathing in SoCal.
