Episode 44: J.K.'s Magical Meltdown Jan 14, 2019

Show notes

Goblet of Fire chapter 27. JK Rowling decided to just have a full on twitter meltdown right as we were about to record this week, so we spend a lot of time talking about her bizarre takes on income inequality. This casts kind of a long shadow over our reading, but we manage wring a lot of discussion out of this one very strange catch-up chapter. Finally, we celebrate Snape's birthday with a Liz-led lecture on his strange place in the fandom. Like the show? Episode 43: Well, Here We Go Again! Jan 07, 2019

Show notes

Goblet of Fire chapters 25-26. We're back! After a long holiday break we dust out the cobwebs and discuss classic literature, bitcoin, commemorative 9/11 coins, and mermaids! The reading this episode was surprisingly great honestly. This book is pretty good when there's a plot. Finally, we ring in the new year by making some resolutions. Like the show? Episode 42: Welcome to the Black Parade, 'Arry Dec 24, 2018

Show notes

Goblet of Fire chapter 24. Rita Skeeter's Scoop is here, but before that we have some scoops of our own: chiefly, more deets from the case of JK Rowling's rogue personal assistant. Our reading this week is pretty good, but definitely exists in the shadow of the not so great chapters that came before it. It's pretty packed for a single chapter! Like the show? Episode 41: Viktor Kum Dec 17, 2018

Show notes

Goblet of Fire chapters 22-23. We have seen Dobby's ass, and balls. We also want to know whether or not Dobby has a beard, but that's sort of secondary to his ass and balls. Speaking of ass, these chapters are kind of a bummer! Ron is redpilled and Harry does nothing, but we squeeze some enjoyment out of the fringe teen drama and a few good character moments. After that, we get festive with some Tumblr/Reddit Yule Ball content. Like the show? Episode 40: Grimble Film Dec 10, 2018

Show notes

Goblet of Fire chapter 21. The House Elf Liberation Front chapter is here, but before we can unpack it we have to mourn a high-profile death and dig into some JK Rowling Twitter drama. Also, Grimble Film? Not what you'd expect. Like the show? Episode 39: Steampunk Egg Dec 03, 2018

Show notes

Goblet of Fire chapters 19-20. We're back! After taking a break for the holiday, we have lots to say about box office numbers, Bustle, and Artemis Fowl. Our reading this week has dragons (good) and Harry being kind of a jackass (not so good) and a steampunk egg. Finally, we kick off the Christmas season with some Pottermore dinner planning.

Episode 38: The Wheighing of the Whands Nov 17, 2018

Show notes

Goblet of Fire chapter 18. Content warning for transphobia discussion, because this chapter has a part that sucks big time!! The Crimes of Grindelwald (listen to the episode!) looms over us, but we still dutifully discuss our reading for the week. There's some... good? Character stuff? Sort of? And a lot of bad stuff too. Harry Potter is truly a land of contrasts.

Shrieking at the Movies: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Nov 17, 2018

Show notes

Well, we saw it. We did our waiting and saw the damn movie on opening night, and it sure was an experience. How many beasts were there, and just how fantastic were they? What were Grindelwald's crimes? Why couldn't this movie just be two hours of Newt hanging out with that adorable Zuwou? HEADS UP: throwing a content warning here for some fairly heavy discussions of sexual violence, including in relation to slavery, which is a weirdly huge part of this Harry Potter movie!

Bonus UNLOCKED! The Crimes of Grindlewald Predictions Nov 14, 2018

Show notes

We go beyond trailer reactions to predict specific details from the Fantastic Beasts sequel--and the rest of the series. Is Dumbledore gay? Just how bad is Grindelwald? What the hell will Queenie do? Why are they making these movies? Why?
