The Seacoast Podcast: Things You Won’t Hear On Sunday

The Seacoast Podcast: Things You Won’t Hear On Sunday captures meaningful – and often challenging — conversations that happen off the stage amongst the people of Seacoast. Hang with us and guests we love to learn from, including authors, artists, pastors, and many others who share their stories of struggle and oftentimes, how God’s grace brought about peace and redemption. We hope listening in to our discussions revolving around church, theology, and culture will feel like slowing down and hanging with friends. You’ll be encouraged, laugh, find solidarity with someone else’s story, or see things from a new point of view. What if listening to other perspectives was the first step in loving people with a different point of view? We’re giving it a shot.

221 - She Didn't Even Ask to Be Healed (w/ Pastor Julie Mullins) Oct 20, 2026
    Show notes

Pastor Julie Mullins, Co-Senior Pastor of Christ Fellowship Church in West Palm Beach, sits down with host Joey Svendsen and Seacoast's Co-Lead Pastor, Lisa Surratt to talk through Luke 13, the story of a woman who had been bent over by a spirit for eighteen years until Jesus healed her.

Julie breaks down three things that Jesus spoke over the woman, starting with "daughter" and shares that until we accept what he says about us as our identity, we settle for smaller, limiting labels instead. The three also get into what it’s like for a husband and wife to co-pastor a church, why legalism often comes from a place of pride, and how to respond with grace instead of suspicion when someone new to faith doesn't look the part yet.

After the interview, Joey, Lynne, Jill, and Tomelex take over for a lighter round: killing animals for sport, a very loud hog-castration field trip, and Lynne gets asked about the alligator mating call-at-night incident that everyone's been waiting on. They also discuss why Joey was felt more exhausted than he expected after standing for eight hours at Chosen (he asked AI to explain it), and they work through the ethics of helping panhandlers, including a story that didn't go the way Joey hoped. Finally, they close it out by digging into one of the more debated passages in the New Testament: Should women stay silent and not teach men, as Paul wrote it? Lynne, Jill, and Tomelex push back on Joey’s take that the text doesn't leave much wiggle room.

220 - Holding the Story: Chaplain Eva Bleeker on Suffering and the Ministry of Listening Oct 13, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, Joey and Lynne sit down with Dr. Eva Bleeker, known to her students as Chaplain Eva, a board-certified chaplain who spent a decade doing pastoral care in hospitals and now teaches chaplaincy at Denver Seminary.

Her work centers on the power of story, and in this conversation she unpacks why simply receiving someone's story, without needing to fix it, can be the ministry itself. Eva walks through what she calls "narrative identity theory," the idea that the way we listen actually shapes the story a person is willing to tell, and how showing up distracted, hurried, or performative can push someone deeper into isolation.

She and Joey trade stories from years of sitting with people in crisis, talk through what it looks like to prepare yourself before walking into a hard conversation, and dig into why naming your own emotions is the first skill of good pastoral care.

After the interview, Joey, Lynne, and Jack stick around for a theological deep-dive, revisiting an old comment Lynne said about predatory pastors. They also all face the fact that none of them ever knew what CVS stood for. Until today.

219 - Deconstruction and the Other Side of Certainty (w/ Pastor Kristin Mockler Young) Oct 06, 2026
    Show notes

Pastor Kristin Mockler Young of Mosaic Church in Charlotte sits down with host Joey Svendsen and Pastor Chip Judd to dig into a buzzword in Christian circles: deconstruction. They discuss Kristin’s book, The Other Side of Certainty: How to Follow Jesus When Easy Answers No Longer Work, give an overview of deconstruction, and explore how it doesn’t always lead people away from faith—but can often be a necessary part of building a healthier one.

Other topics include deconstruction as an act of rebellion, walking away from God when one is experiencing him, and the role certainty plays in faith and where it falls short. Then, Joey, Kristin, and Chip share their own “Ebenezers"—undeniable encounters with God that strengthened their faith and have made it impossible to walk in unbelief.

To wrap up the episode, Seacoasters Jill Forbes, Ciarrah Lindsay, and Tomelex Copeland respond to Pastor Kristin’s conversation, dispel negative connotations around “deconstruction,” and then jump in to talk Joey through his recent confrontation with Chick-fil-A customer service.

    218 - God and Healing (w/ Becky Johnson) Sep 29, 2026
    Show notes

Former punk-rock, self-loathing, self-harmer, now a minister of the gospel and leader at one of the most influential Christian ministries in America; and it all started when a stranger handed her a compact disc, (google it, youngsters) strongly encouraging her to give it a listen. While listening, the ensuing healing and transformation brought to her by the Holy Spirit would drastically change the trajectory of her life and vastly increase the amount of hope in her heart.
Given that Becky is also a former student at Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, we also ponder and process the topic of supernatural healings. Why don't we see more healings? Why does there seem to be more healings in developing countries? Is it a cop-out to end certain prayer requests with "...if it's your will?" These questions and many more on the topic of Jesus and supernatural healings.
If you enjoy this episode, you may enjoy last years mini-series on a corporate healing season Seacoast Church experienced in 2019, leaving the culture at Seacoast changed forever. Here's a link to the first episode of that 4-part series: EP 1 of Healing Series.

217 - Hurricane Hugo Anniversary Special: Rob Fowler, Bill Sharpe, Bill Walsh Sep 22, 2026
    Show notes

On September 21, 1989, Hurricane Hugo barreled toward Charleston as a powerful Category 4 storm. Just after midnight, the eye passed directly over the Peninsula and slammed the coast with sustained winds of 135 mph with a storm surge as high as 20 feet in some areas. The damage to the city was estimated to be $7 billion, making it, at the time, the costliest hurricane in U.S. history. It remains one of the defining nights in Charleston's history. This episode is geared toward Charlestonians, especially those here at the time of the storm, but we know all listeners will enjoy.

Host, Joey Svendsen was in seventh grade when Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston. In this episode, he sits down with meteorologists Rob Fowler and Bill Walsh, along with retired news anchor Bill Sharpe, all of whom worked to keep Charleston informed until they went off the air. The men swap memories of that dreadful experience including the moment they realized it was going to be bad. They also discuss how storm tracking has evolved since Hugo and ask whether it makes sense to say, “Charleston is due for another one.”

To continue the Hugo conversation, the hosts discuss the question: How do you make sense of a natural disaster when you believe in a God who is both all-loving and all-powerful?

The hosts close with a little light-hearted conversation, and debate whether they would drink from a cup after a fly flew into it, and discuss whether it's harmless to say "I'm fine" when it's actually a very bad day.

216 - One Thing: Clearing the Noise and Drawing Closer to Jesus (w/ Andi Andrew) Sep 15, 2026
    Show notes

On this episode, host Joey Svendsen sits down with Andi Andrew to discuss how the past year has been life-changing for her and her family. When God asked Andi to ruthlessly let go of her full schedule of traveling, speaking, and ministry—a lifestyle that earned a significant amount of her family’s income—she found freedom from her unhealthy attachments to the world. She became completely dependent on God and learned that even good change can feel like both freedom and loss at the same time.

This journey inspired her to write her latest book, One Thing: 21 Devotions to Clear the Noise and Draw Near to Jesus, a devotional centered on the story of Mary and Martha and what Jesus really meant when he said Mary chose the right thing.

Also in this conversation, Andi talks candidly about how trust can feel like a weapon, exposing our fears, and how even through surrendering her lifestyle, she found peace that no paycheck could ever buy.

To open the episode, Sparkle Anderson, Jack Hoey, and Joey Svendsen discuss germaphobia, the Christian metal band Demon Hunter suing K-Pop Demon Hunters for trademark infringement, and dig into a mini Bible study on the three temptations of Christ.

215 - Heaven and Living in Light of It (w/ Pastor Brian Zahnd) Sep 08, 2026
    Show notes

Pastor Brian Zahnd sits down with host Joey Svendsen and podcast regular Jack Hoey, to talk about heaven and how the concept of an eternal kingdom should inform a Christian’s perspective on life. With his newest book, "Unseen Existence: Of Heaven, Earth, and the Divine Mystery in All Things."as the context of the conversation, Brian asserts that many Christians and churches today have disenchanted souls because of their losing sight of heaven, and that this loss is reflected in our culture.

In this conversation, Joey, Jack, and Brian also dig into what heaven actually is, whether people continue to learn and grow there, why heaven won’t be boring despite being eternal, and how a proper understanding of heaven will radically change everything, including how one engages in prayer, politics, and daily living.

To open the episode, Bri, Brian, Joey, and Lynne dig into a handful of quick topics: those times you just feel "off," the criticism that seeker-friendly churches aren't deep enough, how differently we might live if there were no God, and some guesswork on what we'll actually remember once we get to heaven.

214 - Seeing People Through the Eyes of Jesus, Including Yourself (Chip Judd Part 2) Sep 01, 2026
    Show notes

Pastor and counselor Chip Judd returns with Jeff Leinberger, Ciarrah Lindsay, Lynne Story, and Joey Svendsen, continuing last week's conversation on Shades of Grace: Seeing People Through the Eyes of Jesus, Starting With Yourself.

This week: self-love. What it actually looks like to love yourself, why it feels awkward even to try, and how ultimate surrender to God's sovereignty is really self-acceptance — easier said than done, since, as Chip puts it, the hardest person you'll ever have to learn to love is you. He walks through how to retrain your soul — one step is resting in God's love instead of chasing from people what only God can give. Chip also talks about the power of judgment-free environments that are also full of grace and truth, and Jeff, Ciarrah, and Joey turn that lens on Seacoast's own staff culture.

Along the way, Joey shares a spiritual encounter he had with a homeless man, and the group gets into why Christians being "angry at sinners" doesn't add up.

213 - Seeing People Through the Eyes of Jesus, Including Yourself (Chip Judd Part 1) Aug 25, 2026
    Show notes

Pastor and counselor Chip Judd joins Bri McLeod, Lynne Stroy, and Joey Svendsen to talk about his new mini book, Shades of Grace: Seeing People Through the Eyes of Jesus, Starting With Yourself.

Using the book as a jumping-off point, Chip breaks down what actually makes each of us who we are — and makes the case, backed by real science, that a lot of our weaknesses and struggles aren't fully our fault. That gives us solid ground to offer grace, both to ourselves and to other people. Skip the grace, and you miss out on the deeper work God wants to do in all of us. Bottom line: everyone's doing the best they can with what they were given, and we all need grace, truth, and time to change.

Also covered along the way: pet peeves, and when the world's going to end.

212 - Bears, Dogs, Being Bored, Being Frustrated Aug 18, 2026
    Show notes

Jack, Joey, and Lynne catch up on their summers, and each drops listeners one "tid-bit" of spiritual wisdom. Joey's summer included a bear encounter and getting chased twice by large dogs. Also up for discussion: is good customer service dying? Is boredom a thing of the past — and is that a bad thing? They dig into some surprising stats on how parents' obsession with keeping kids "safe" might be quietly hurting their mental health, and talk honestly about why Christians sometimes struggle to honor other people's journeys — landing on a simple, uncomfortable answer: it might just be a lack of love. Plus, some real talk on trusting your car's AI more than you probably should.
