The Seacoast Podcast: Things You Won’t Hear On Sunday

The Seacoast Podcast: Things You Won’t Hear On Sunday captures meaningful – and often challenging — conversations that happen off the stage amongst the people of Seacoast. Hang with us and guests we love to learn from, including authors, artists, pastors, and many others who share their stories of struggle and oftentimes, how God’s grace brought about peace and redemption. We hope listening in to our discussions revolving around church, theology, and culture will feel like slowing down and hanging with friends. You’ll be encouraged, laugh, find solidarity with someone else’s story, or see things from a new point of view. What if listening to other perspectives was the first step in loving people with a different point of view? We’re giving it a shot.

    Show notes

Pastor of Leadership Care at Seacoast Church, Chip Judd, takes great strides in seeking out truth. But, with a background in drugs, eastern mysticism and reckless living, Jesus had to find Chip. Since then, he has restored Chip’s life, made him a charismatic preacher, revealed to him his gift of counseling and strategically positioned Chip to speak truth about the science of mental health as well as the power of God to restore fallen humanity. In this unique time when the church seems to be in the early stages of trending toward a healthy disposition in interacting with the real challenges that come along with mental health, Chip has much to say.

119 - Building Healthy Marriages and Ministries with Pastors Josh and Lisa Surratt Oct 08, 2024
    Show notes

Seacoast Church Lead Pastors Josh and Lisa Surratt have walked with friends who have experienced the heartache of divorce and they’ve seen the relational fallout that comes in many shapes and sizes. On this week’s episode, we discuss the importance of healthy individuals and marriages, including Josh and Lisa’s desire to create a Seacoast staff culture that encourages individuals to open up about personal challenges. The couple shares their hearts for staff members to be healthy, even providing a strategic plan for restoration of health. We’ll also talk about why Josh and Lisa operate off the assumption that if there are healthy marriages and healthy individuals doing ministry, productivity can be relinquished to God (1 Corinthians 3: 6-11).

    118 - While She Was Sleeping (w/ Carolyn Haas) Oct 01, 2024
    Show notes

While in town to speak at the Chosen Women’s Conference, Pastor Carolyn Haas joined us in the studio to share about God's faithfulness throughout her life. Growing up in a family of faith, walking away from God, losing her father to suicide, and then returning to church after her boyfriend, Peter, had a life-changing encounter with God. Now her husband, Pastor Peter and Carolyn lead Substance Church in Minnesota, combining their strengths and weaknesses to complement a fruitful ministry.
We also talk to Carolyn about some common themes (and "debate-like" discussions) we've unpacked on the podcast including "The Billy Graham Rule," women in church leadership, and how much a Christian should be invested in spiritual warfare.
At the top of the episode, Roy Jacques, Tomelex Copeland, and Joey Svendsen talk to Lynne Stroy about her experiences at Chosen through the years and they assess the fine line between harmless joking and disrespectful ridicule when it comes to the things of the spiritual.

    117 - Gospel Rap is Back w/ 1K PHEW Sep 24, 2024
    Show notes

Atlanta-based hip-hop artist, 1K Phew joins us fresh off of his 30th birthday to share the meaning behind his “gospel rap.” A "self-proclaimed old soul,” wisdom included, 1K Phew grew up in church before chasing a different lifestyle and getting in trouble with the law. Through that experience, he had a spiritual rebirth and began a relationship with God. He has now taken the hip-hop scene by storm and in his own words, "gospel rap is back.”
In addition to his story, 1K Phew talks to Lynne Stroy and Joey Svendsen about the difference between being a "Christian artist" and "an artist who communicates Christian themes.” He also gives the rationale for why he collaborates with hip-hop artists who don't hold to Christian faith.

At the top of the episode, Lynne, Joey, and Luke Gaikwad discuss "the Cheers paradigm." The idea is that today when you look at pictures of TV stars who appeared in shows in the 1970s and 1980s, while in their 30s and 40s, look to us like they are in their 50s and 60s. It's a thing.

    116 - The Instagram Hip-Hop Free-styling Sensation, Ray Wimley Sep 17, 2024
    Show notes

Ray Wimley considers himself a family man. He's a proud father, happy husband, one after the deeper things of life, and he’s driven to spread love to his fellowman. In the last few years, Ray, a hip-hop artist, has taken to Instagram, posting videos of himself free-style rapping in public spheres. His rhymes incorporate people's actions, attire, and anything that comes to his brilliant mind, leaving hip-hop fans marveling and the masses smiling.
Ray and host Joey Svendsen talk about Ray's upbringing, laugh, and lament about the pleasures and heaviness of being a dad. Joey also probes for the framework and mechanics of Ray's gift of rapping and plays some highlights while Ray gives us the scoop on some of his tactics.
At the top of the episode, Pastors Josh Surratt and Josh Walters sit with Lynne to talk internal leadership and accountability structures at Seacoast, what's behind Lynne's intimidating “stone-cold face,” and they remember a trivial concern from back in the day when Joey pushed back hard against Josh Walters.

115 - After an Abortion: Finding Grace, Restoration and Community Sep 10, 2024
    Show notes

As Peyton Pickens was preparing for the Chosen Women’s Conference in 2023, she did not expect the freedom she would encounter or the rescue and redemption she was about to experience. Ten years prior, Peyton had an abortion and had struggled with that decision ever since. But, during the conference, The Holy Spirit convinced her to be prayed over by another woman, who then confessed to Peyton her own abortion earlier in life.

With host, Joey Svendsen, Peyton walks us through how her life unfolded, leading to an abortion, her life-changing transformation, and what she’s learned in the one year since Chosen.

At the top of the episode, Tomelex Copeland, Jack Hoey III, Abbie Love, and Joey Svendsen talk about Kareem Abdul Jabaar's work-life balance and whether the sacrifices to pursue greatness are worth making. They wrap things up by analyzing who's more likable—Lebron James or Michael Jordan.

114 - Michael Sweet, Frontman of Platinum-Selling Metal Band, Stryper Sep 03, 2024
    Show notes

In a pre-MP3 and CD era, vinyl full-albums abounded in Christian bookstores and at local record stores. It's 1986, and today's guest, Michael Sweet, and his band Stryper ("by His stripes, you are healed.." Isaiah 53:5) just released their album To Hell With the Devil. It's about to sell millions in both Christian and secular markets, with its songs all over the radio, and music videos on MTV. Host, Joey Svendsen was in the 4th grade, but found that Stryper album at Family Christian Bookstore and it turned his life upside-down, resulting in music exploration being a full-blown hobby.
Stryper was no different than the other "metal band greats," like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Poison. From impeccable songwriting to catchy melodies and shredding guitars, Stryper was on top of their game. The things that separated them from the rest was their motivation to spread the gospel of Jesus and their song lyrics that matched that passion.

Joey talks to Michael Sweet about the early days of Stryper, the hair and make-up culture of the 80s metal scene, and why Michael had to walk away to get healthy and prioritize God and family. Throughout the episode, Joey highlights some of his favorite Stryper songs as listeners are treated to audio clips of them all.
At top of the episode, Abbie Love, Joey, Tomelex and Jack Hoey III talk pointless homework assignments and spiritual warfare in context of the Surratt's wreck discussed in episode 112.

[BONUS] "God Help Me With My Faith" (a post-sermon discussion on Sunday's message) Aug 29, 2024
    Show notes

Pastor Adam Martin makes his first appearance on the Seacoast Podcast, it's been long overdue. He delivered a sermon four days ago on Sunday (August 25th), "God Help Me With My Faith." On this bonus episode, he's in studio with Jack Hoey III (Creative Director, Pastor, host of show), Joey Svendsen (host of the show, Pastor) and Geoff Reppard (Pastor of Seacoast Small Groups, also first time on the podcast) to talk faith, doubt, certainty and disbelief. Other questions are discussed: Has western Christianity taken the "personal relationship" component of faith too far and perhaps have not enough emphasis on the beauty and truth of "the Faith" being originally birthed into "the church" (a group of people) and never starting with "one person having his or her own personal faith?"
If painful seasons are "building blocks" of faith, are they also good? Does God give these seasons as gifts? Pastor Adam explains the important distinction between "God causing" and "God ordaining," especially in regards to growth from suffering. Lastly, the four reflect on the importance of experiencing God through the Holy Spirit while also discussing how an overemphasis on "personal feeling" and a zealous drive for experiences can both be counterproductive or even harmful to one's faith.
The guys today can't answer emphatically on a lot of these questions, but they can ponder on it all and certainly give their best guesses; after many years of seeking God, a lot of invested prayer (Adam more than others, very likely. holier, tad older), and a lot of scripture reading. Certainly each having his own experiences with past seasons of doubt and unbelief and now each in a season of peace and belief in the core essentials of the Gospel.

113 - Tired of Being Tired? Receive God's Rest with Jess Connolly Aug 27, 2024
    Show notes

Author and Pastor at Bright City Church in Charleston, SC, Jess Connolly joins the podcast to share some helpful advice, spiritual practices, and truths on adopting a lifestyle marked with rest. In her newest book, Tired of Being Tired: Receive God's Realistic Rest for Your Soul-Deep Exhaustion, she walks the reader through practices on how to find the source of one's fatigue. Jess includes scriptures to meditate on for saying "no," shares strategies for protecting personal peace, and practices for bringing realistic rest into your daily and weekly rhythms.

With co-host Amy Worley and Joey Svendsen, the three also talk through seasons in which rest seems impossible, how busyness is viewed as a badge of honor, how comparison kills, and how rest comes easier for some.
At the top of the episode, Amy, Joey, Lynne, and Roy talk some about rest, telling lies, the Olympics and a moment over the summer when Joey lost his cool with a stranger.

[BONUS] "God Help Me With My Finances" (a post-sermon discussion on Sunday's message) Aug 20, 2024
    Show notes

Pastor Joel Delph delivered a sermon two days ago on Sunday (August 18th), "God Help Me With My Finances." He's in studio with Seacoast Chief Financial Officer, Nick Johnston as well as Seacoast member and professional financial advisor, Rich Young. With host Joey Svendsen, the three continue the conversation on finances that Joel started in his sermon this past Sunday.
The four talk a bit about Seacoast's financial strategies, whether tithing is "Old Testament theology," the deeper heart change one can experience during seasons of financial hardship, how to "give responsibly," and there's even some sound advice for parents who want to instill in their kids, good financial stewardship.
Nick and Rich bring to the table helpful insight on finances from a wealth of knowledge and from extensive professional experience and personal practice. Most importantly they demonstrate lives of astute personal financial stewardship with "living out the gospel" being the goal (i.e. increasing generosity is the goal).
