    The Scriptures Are Real

The Scriptures Are Real (TSAR) with Kerry Muhlestein is a podcast where we look at elements of the scriptures that have become real to us. We interview both experts (people with language, archaeological, historical backgrounds, etc.), and lay folks, and explore times when the scriptures became real to them. This is done from the viewpoint of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We believe that there is real power in the scriptures and that as they become more real we can better apply them to our lives and draw more power from them.
If you listen to this podcast you will learn all kinds of interesting background information that will help you understand and learn more from the scriptures. We believe it will allow you to add real power to your life.
My gratitude to my co-host Lamar Newmeyer. Also to my friend Rich Nicholls, who composed the introductory music.

In this episode Kerry and George Pierce discuss how the Lord extends his mercy to Israel as they have failed to repent. Because of His covenant, He promises Israel another chance, where they can learn to be turned by God, turn to God and receive a new heart and a new covenant. They look at how God will nurture and shepherd His people in their adversity. They also look at the message of hope God sent through Jeremiah when He asked Jeremiah to buy a field because one day they will have the chance to use that land again. Then Kerry and Rabbi Jarrod Grover look at Lamentations. They explore the cries over destroyed Jerusalem and what we can learn from that. In particular, Rabbi Grover discusses how Jews use those Lamentations as a time to mourn, to sit with the sorrow that follows destruction and feel it and learn from it.

He also briefly discusses how to understand Isaiah 52 in light of Isaiah 47. Then he and Dr. Daniel Belnap discuss how Isaiah 52 draws on both Exodus and Babylon imagery as well as traveling in the wilderness imagery. They also discuss how it prepares us for Christ's second coming and how it can see us through times of uncertainty and how to deal with things we can't control because of Christ's redemption. They talk about the necessity of staying with the camp of Zion to have peace and redemption. Then Kerry and Dr. Paul Hoskisson talk about the transition from chapters 52 and 53 and how the transition verses that speak of a triumphal and suffering servant work well in both verses. Dr. Hoskisson walks us through how the "marred" servant can mean the anointed servant or the blemished servant. They explore how Christ is both a suffering servant and a triumphal king. Then Kerry and Rabbi Grover examine together Isaiah 53 and how the suffering servant is both Christ and Israel. They look at the idea of a messiah and redeemer in general and and what it means for Jews and what it means to be an anointed one and all the people in the Bible that were anointed ones. They delve into what it means for Israel to be a suffering servant and what it means for a redeeming messiah to be a suffering servant. They look at the original context and how both Jews and Latter-day Saints fulfill the imagery in the passage. They explore the shared suffering of those two groups and how both groups have a task to bring the Lord and His redemption to the world. Rabbi Grover shares his experiences about learning of LDS suffering and the affect it had on him. Then Dr. John Howell and Kerry look at Isaiah 54 and how it teaches us of God's hesed for us. They see the way it follows and interacts with Isaiah 53. They also look at how the Book of Mormon helps us understand it, especially the time markers in the text. They examine how God takes away shame and makes us new and ready to move forward in a relationship with God, the most powerful creator. They look at how we forsake God but He accepts us back, and the incredible imagery of His unmovableness in waiting for us.
