How Disney's Film Chief Got Out of His Own Way | Dave Hollis Mar 11, 2020
    Show notes

Are you your own worst enemy?

There are going to be hundreds of obstacles that we face when trying to pursue greatness.

Some people will tell you that you're not enough.

Others will say your ideas are unconventional and crazy - "it's never going to work!"

Maybe your own family doesn't believe in you.

The pressure from other people can be insane and paralyzing, but sometimes, we are our own worst enemies. We can get in our own way when it comes to our dreams. Insecurity has a way of tripping us up when we try to get out of our comfort zone. Thoughts like, "I'm not enough," play on repeat.

Other times, pride has a way of convincing us that we're doing everything right, when we're actually not, and that's not great either. We always need to be willing to change, to humble ourselves when necessary, and to get out of our comfort zone.

On this episode of The School of Greatness, I've got Dave Hollis in the house to tell you his story about struggle, adaptation, and success.

Dave Hollis is one half of the dynamic, powerhouse duo that is Rachel and Dave Hollis. He's the former Disney film distribution chief who was responsible for the relaunch of the Star Wars franchise, the Avengers series, and mega-hits like Frozen and Beauty and the Beast, but he left his prestigious post at Disney last year to lead The Hollis Company alongside his wife Rachel Hollis.

In addition to running a company and raising his four beautiful children, Dave is touring the US, regaling tales of how one former personal development skeptic became a spokesperson for growth.

Dave understands the path to success well and acknowledges that it's a path full of change. It requires not only strategy but also the willingness to grow and adapt to situations you never saw coming.

I had Dave's wife, Rachel Hollis, author of Girl, Wash Your Face, on my podcast a while back, and I was so excited to have Dave on here as well! He gets vulnerable talking about their marriage and how they've navigated all this crazy stuff together.

I think you all are really gonna enjoy this one. Join me on Episode 926 to learn how to get out of your own way so you can reach your fullest potential with Dave Hollis.

    • What has been the biggest area of growth for you in the last 2 years? (9:06)
    • Is there anything in your marriage that still isn’t resolved since Rachel’s career took off? (19:30)
    • What have you learned is the common thing that holds women back from their greatness? (40:37)
    • What’s your biggest fear about the next 5 years? (46:20)
    • Why did you decide to step out and write your own book and brand? (51:47)

    • Why Dave is okay with going from CEO to COO (0:30)
    • What happens when you have a huge lynchpin product in your business (4:18)
    • How to shift your perspective on vulnerability and transparency if you think they are liabilities (6:10)
    • Why Dave shifted his relationship with alcohol to focus on running (10:28)
    • How to unpack the stories that run your life (17:30)
    • Where to draw the line with what you share publicly (26:35)

You Don't Need an Apology to Forgive | Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt Mar 09, 2020
    Show notes

    Forgiveness is a gift.

Forgive and forget. We've all heard this phrase at some point, but it's way easier said than done.

We are all hurt at some point in our lives. Maybe a close friend has betrayed your trust, a family member ignored your hospitality, or a partner cheated on you. Sometimes, these conflicts end, and the other person admits their wrong and asks for forgiveness, but other times, they don't. Maybe they couldn't care less that they hurt you.

Sometimes, people intentionally hurt us. Maybe you've been abused, neglected, manipulated, or harassed. As a young boy, I was sexually assaulted by a man I didn't know. It was traumatizing.

There are something things that just seem unforgivable.

But forgiveness is not something you need permission for. It's a choice that you make yourself, and ultimately, it's an empowering and liberating one.

My guest today on The School of Greatness has just written a whole book about the subject, and it's a book you're going to want to read.

Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt is an American New York Times bestselling author, TV correspondent, philanthropist, and the daughter of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and broadcast journalist Maria Shriver. In 2019, Katherine married actor Chris Pratt, and let me tell you — they are relationship goals.

In 2010, she wrote her first book entitled Rock What You've Got: Secrets to Loving Your Inner and Outer Beauty from Someone Who's Been There and Back. In this book, Katherine describes her personal journey and encourages other young women to achieve confidence and a positive self-image.

Her fourth book called The Gift of Forgiveness is set for release on March 10. In the book, she interviews 22 different women about their experience overcoming trauma and hurt while figuring out the path to healing and forgiveness.

Katherine is also a HUGE animal lover. Katherine works as an Ambassador for Best Friends Animal Society and the ASPCA, lending her time, voice, and energy to spread awareness about animal rescue. She rescued her own dog, Maverick, and even wrote a children's book about him called Maverick and Me.

Katherine is such a genuinely kind and thoughtful person. I really enjoyed this interview with her and was blown away by the things she had to say.

Are you battling with forgiveness? Do you feel imprisoned by your pain? Then join me on Episode 925 with the wonderful Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt to learn how forgiveness is a step toward healing and greatness.

    • What’s the most powerful lesson you’ve learned from your mom? (1:30)
    • Was there ever a time when you didn’t love yourself? (4:05)
    • What thing in your life are you most proud of? (8:13)
    • What has been the hardest thing for you to forgive in your life? (12:10)
    • How many people did you need to forgive in the process of writing this book? (17:45)
    • When have you felt most alone? (27:25)
    • What have animals taught you about forgiveness? (30:28)
    • How can you forgive something quickly when it saddens or angers you? (32:55)

    • Why it’s important to be proud of your relationships (9:39)
    • The biggest relationship lesson Katherine has learned in her first year of marriage (10:15)
    • Why waiting for someone to ask for forgiveness doesn’t work (14:15)
    • How long it takes to forgive someone (19:58)

The First Step to Ending a Toxic Relationship | Coach Chris Lee Mar 06, 2020
    Show notes

“You know energetically if someone is adding to or subtracting from you.”

If you’ve never experienced or been a part of a toxic relationship, congratulations!

You will still benefit from listening to this episode on The School of Greatness, however.

For the rest of us, this conversation with Transformation Coach Chris Lee (back for the 5th time by popular demand!) is powerful.

Take it from me: toxic relationships are not worth it, whether they are romantic, professional, family, friends, whatever.

But it can be really really hard to end them if you don’t know how.

That’s why Chris and I wanted to discuss this process on the podcast. In this 5 Minute Friday, he breaks down the first two steps, walks you through the how and why, and drops a lot of wisdom along the way.

This process is powerful and can free you from relationships in your life that need to shift or go away.

17 Companies Failed Before He Made $15 Million | James Altucher Mar 02, 2020
    Show notes

Want to be successful? You gotta fail first.

If you want to accomplish anything great in life, it's most likely not going to be an easy path to get there.

Sometimes, things fall into place for us. But more often than not, things fall out of place, and we find ourselves sitting in failure. Sometimes it's our fault, sometimes it's not, but whatever the case, failures are hard to handle.

I myself understand failure. I used to live on my sister's coach. My injury immobilized me, and for months, I wallowed in self-pity. Finally, I realized that my failures and hardships didn't hinder me from greatness. My sister kicked me out, and I learned to fight for myself again.

My guest today knows all about failure and how it can set you up for success.

In addition to having incredible hair, James Altucher is an American hedge fund manager, entrepreneur, author, venture capitalist, and podcaster. He has published 20 books, and he is a contributor to publications including The Financial Times and The Huffington Post. He is also the host of The James Altucher Show in which he interviews innovators, creators, and just all around amazing people. James has founded or cofounded more than 20 companies, 17 of which have failed, but he hasn't let this slow him down.

Failure is a big part of James' story. In fact, I believe that anyone who is remotely successful has probably experienced an extraordinary amount of failure in their life. Why? Because overcoming failure is a step towards success.

At one point, James lost almost all his money. He was completely broke. He had less than two hundred dollars in his bank account. But somehow, he was able to build his business back up, and change that two hundred dollars into fifteen million.

Want to learn his secret? Then tune into Episode 922 and get ready to be blown away by entrepreneur, author, and hair inspiration, James Altucher.

    • When was the last time you cried? (6:01)
    • What are you proud of yourself for and what do you regret as a father? (10:08)
