The new Australian thriller that centers on female vulnerability in a male atmosphere reminds us that monsters aren't always lurking under the bed waiting to grab our ankles. Sometimes they're sitting at the bar waiting for a drink.

It doesn't take much. Sometimes all you need is a well-planned cast, a simple storyline, and a nice plot shift to scare someone. "Barbarian" is simple, with a small cast and a simple story that creates fear that births not from surprise, but confusion.

David Gordon Green and I will forever have beef until he gets it together. "The Exorcist: Believer" is underwhelming and nowhere close to being as scary and terrifying as its 1973 predecessor.

What’s the secret to good horror movies: character development. Create three-dimensional characters and give your audience time and space to bond with them so the audience has reason to care when things happen to them. Nia DaCosta fails in this aspect. Instead of pushing us to bond with the main character she tries to force us to feel something for the film’s central social issue. It’s visually stunning but thematically loose, but more importantly…it’s not scary.

The movie has some weaknesses, but "The Blind" is one of the best Christian films I've seen in a while.

John David Washington shines in "The Creator", but this movie is missing something. The best way I can describe it is this: good bones, poor muscle tone.

"Dumb Money" is well-acted and well-written, but it has some issues. Either way, it's a great real-life David and Goliath story.

"Gone Baby Gone" reminds us that actions have consequences and that doing the right thing is never as simple as it should be. "Gone Baby Gone" is an emotional ride placing us in the center of a moral dilemma, forcing us to pick sides and make a decision. The early 2000s were rough for Ben Affleck, but his directorial debut starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan gave us a new reason to root for him.

Bishal's Dutta's directorial debut is a valiant effort, but the social commentary is heavy-handed and the artistry that makes a scary movie scary is lacking.

Every film has something to say, but some say it better than others. "The Menu" is a conversation about wealth, inequality, and the divide between the haves and have-nots. Why this film didn't get more Oscar attention is beyond me, but let's talk about it.
