Let's take a look at a few of the main themes from Gary Ross's "The Hunger Games" as we prepare ourselves for the prequel.

"Journey to Bethlehem" is an interesting directorial debut. The music is good and the dancing is questionable, but the "re-writing" of the nativity story is distracting. Seeing more Christian films on the big screen is nice, but I don't know if this film is helpful.

"The Marvels" is fun trash. It's entertaining, goofy, and the opposite of serious, but it's well below normal Marvel expectations. With a weak story, weak plot, and a forgettable villain this movie serves to fill the gaps rather than stand on its own. Brie Larson's Carol Danvers is supposed to be the draw, but newcomer Iman Vellani's performance saves this film from being a flat, heartless mess.

Happy "The Marvels" Week...or not. This seems to be the most anticipated movie of the year with presales trailing behind box office bombs such as "The Flash" and "Black Adam." Yes, the SAG Strike is still happening, but Marvel should be able to see itself. The fanfare should produce enough word of mouth to guarantee a slam dunk, but this might be a cinematic airball. Before stepping into new adventures with Carol Danvers, Kamala Kahn, and Monica Rambeau, let's see what went well with "Captain Marvel" and what could go wrong here.

There's a stoic beauty about this that makes sense, probably because it's Priscilla Presley. It's a quiet, understated, portrait of a movie that gives us a story we've heard before but from a different perspective.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! One of the most influential and culturally relevant movies of all time cost almost nothing to make. John Carpenter's "Halloween" birthed a subgenre that gave us some of the best Boogeymen over the last forty years. Also, Michael Myers is my favorite. So let's talk about it!

If you're a fan of the video game series, then you're probably going to love this because it was made for you. For the rest of us, "Five Nights at Freddy's" is fun trash.

"Why do you like scary movies?" I get this question a lot, and while I can give a smile one-sentence answer, I know I can do better than that...so let's talk about it!

The Martin Scorsese slow burn is no joke, but "Killers of the Flower Moon" reminds us this master and student of cinema is one of the greatest of all time for a reason. Well-acted and beautifully tragic, this is easily one of the best of the year.

I can recall the first time I watched a Hitchcock film (Vertigo in 2004) and I remember the second Hitchcock film I watched (Frenzy in 2006), but I don’t remember the first time I saw Psycho. I got my first Netflix account in 2010 and I know this movie was in my DVD queue, but I’m almost positive I saw it sometime before then.
I’m often asked about my favorite movies and this classic is definitely in the top 5. I can watch this over and over and never get bored, and at this point, I’m sure I can recite it word for word from memory. While it’s well-acted and beautifully shot with great sound mixing and film editing, I love the structure. I love how this story starts one way and then shifts into something else, how we’re following Marion on an ill-conceived journey only to be abandoned halfway through. Psycho is as beautiful as it is disturbing, but it’s timeless and one of my absolute favorites.
