The Safety Moment by Utility Safety Partners

In our modern culture, the safety moment has evolved as brief and casual conversations in which to share. They are the perfect time to bring up safety topics in a non-threatening (though potentially lifesaving) way. The Safety Moment Podcast is produced by Utility Safety Partners – a non-profit corporation that has been providing communication service between the digging community and the owners of buried facilities since 1984. Let’s talk about damage prevention, excavation safety, locating and marking, watching for overhead powerlines, and legislative matters to ensure contractors and neighbours can all do their work safely. Let’s talk safety – it’s always a good conversation.

Navigating the Legislative Journey for Public Safety and Prosperity Jun 14, 2023

Mike Sullivan and Ian La Couvee discuss the challenges they’ve faced in the legislative journey they embarked on 18 months ago. It's a simple ask, to have any owner/operator of buried utilities in Alberta be required to become a member of Utility Safety Partners. Make one notification, truly one notification.
But there’s a growing disregard for facts in political discourse and a need for reasonable and informed discussions after elections. Utility Safety Partners remains determined to push for new legislation focused on public safety and economic prosperity.

As Alberta’s political landscape has shifted, Concentric Public Affairs, in helping Utility Safety Partners has had to adopt a more creative approach to achieving the end goal. And the key strategy is to gain support from all sides of the legislature.

Sea to Sea for PTSD - Chad Kennedy's Story Apr 26, 2023
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

After a career in law enforcement Chad Kennedy knew he was suffering from PTSD. He’d seen the signs before… in his father.

One night, hell bent on destruction and suicide, he eventually passed out, waking up in the morning to a surprise. In his drunken stupor he’d gone on social media. He had somehow pledged to walk across Canada, to raise awareness for PTSD, and people were responding to him.

He didn’t remember any of it. But now he had to do it. In August last year Chad and his team at Sea to Sea for PTSD wrapped up the first leg of the cross-Canada trek in Montreal (having started on the west coast). This June, he’ll pick it back up in Quebec City, walking all the way to St John’s Newfoundland.

In this episode Chad shares his personal story. And if you’ve trouble recognizing him on the road, he’s the one walking 50 kms per day, coffee in one hand, cigarette in the other.

Promoting Safety in a Digital World Apr 12, 2023
    Show notes

Safety needs reminders, constantly. Public Awareness.
Once upon a time that meant pamphlets, billboards, radio and TV ads. All of those are still part of the promotional mix but new digital tools are being added like geo fencing, social media strategies, and even generative AI. Not only do they allow for better targeting but provable success statistics.
This is a significant change in recent years to the marketing landscape. One company that’s picked up on that is ATCO Gas. As members of Utility Safety Partners they’re already helping to promote safety but they’ve also gone the extra mile with additional campaigns – one of which recently won an award.
