Nikki Fried Jumps into the Rotation to talk Hemp and Florida Legalization Jun 03, 2026
    Show notes

In this special episode of The Rotation by Suncoast NORML, Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried jumps into the conversation to break down the chaos unfolding around the federal hemp ban. Fried — long known as one of Florida’s most vocal cannabis and hemp advocates — offers her unfiltered take on Congress slipping the ban into a last-minute spending bill, the impact it could have on farmers, small businesses, and consumers, and why the move represents yet another failure of federal cannabis policy. Nikki set up Florida's hemp industry so we know she is pretty upset! But it’s not all doom and gloom. Fried also shares why she believes Florida is closer than ever to full marijuana legalization, what’s happening behind the scenes politically, and how advocates can stay engaged during this pivotal moment. Whether you’re in the hemp industry, the cannabis reform movement, or you just want to understand how these decisions affect everyday Floridians, this episode is one you won’t want to miss.

Adam Smith is the Executive Director of the Marijuana Policy Project. Smith's extensive career in drug policy reform includes significant contributions to the movement. In 1996, as Associate Director of StopTheDrugWar.org, Adam launched The Week Online, the nation’s first publication providing original coverage of domestic and international drug policy from a reform perspective. Two years later, Smith launched the Higher Education Act Reform Campaign, the first successful effort to roll back federal drug war era legislation. He also laid the groundwork for the founding of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, incubating the group under his direction for nearly two years until SSDP’s launch as a stand-alone organization. As the founder of the Craft Cannabis Alliance and the Alliance for Sensible Markets, Smith wrote legislation and spearheaded successful efforts to pass the nation’s first three cannabis interstate commerce bills in Oregon, California, and Washington. Smith was also a founding contributor to the "Marijuana Today" and “Marijuana Tomorrow" podcasts, appearing in more than 250 episodes from 2015-2023. He has organized and lobbied on behalf of craft cannabis producers, managed ballot initiatives and candidate campaigns, negotiated collective bargaining agreements for Oregon nurses, and built and served in coalitions driving legislative action on issues ranging from labor rights to election reform. Morgan Fox is the Political Director at NORML, focusing on congressional lobbying and changing federal cannabis laws. As a professional cannabis policy reform advocate since 2008, Morgan has been directly involved in dozens of successful state ballot initiative campaigns to establish medical and adult use cannabis programs, as well as legislative victories at the local, state, and federal levels. He has been featured in hundreds of print, radio, television, and online publications. Morgan was most recently the Media Relations Director and chief spokesperson for the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) before joining NORML, and spent nearly a decade at the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) prior to that. He lives in Washington, DC, and when he’s not working to end prohibition and repair the damage it has caused, he can usually be found exploring the numerous parks and playgrounds of our nation’s capital with his children. 🎙️ New to streaming or looking to level up? Nick Garulay & Dr. Barry Gordon Jump in The Rotation Jun 01, 2026
    Show notes

Nick Garulay is the founder and CEO of My Florida Green. He believes his company is not so much a business as it is an expression of one of his great passions in life. Working in the medical software field for some time and having been dismayed time and again by the difficulties that physicians and their patients experience in getting medical cannabis into the hands of the people it can most help, he wanted to do something about that. Not being a doctor, rather a talented technology guy, he felt he could do something to help. He created a patient management platform to simplify the process of getting medical marijuana certification for both doctors and patients in Florida. The software he launched in 2016 is now in the past, building three more platforms since then, including an app for patients to control their profile and monitor progress. The data his team has gathered from patients and healthcare professionals has proven invaluable in developing a revolutionary patient management platform in My Florida Green, a patient management platform licensed to compassionate physicians who believe in cannabis as a medicinal alternative. It provides a tool that allows them to facilitate patient engagement, prescribing, and follow-up. With this software, patients are able to properly document their response to treatment and better communicate with their physician. Dr. Barry Gordon is a 1981 graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Barry Gordon spent nearly 35 years of his career practicing Emergency Medicine within some of the most respected trauma centers in the country. As one of the country’s first Board Certified Emergency specialists, he witnessed first hand the changes in America’s healthcare system and the emerging dangers of our modern society. This experience has enabled him to offer a perspective unique to the medical practice In 2015, Dr. Gordon relocated to the Venice area with his wife Patty and opened a state of the art laser tattoo removal clinic. Always cutting edge, Dr. Gordon simultaneously began a telehealth practice where patients could connect with him via their smartphones, tablets, or laptops to receive general medical care. No longer tethered to a large healthcare organization, Dr. Gordon made the decision upon overwhelming passage of the Florida Medical Marijuana Legalization Amendment on November 8, 2016 to begin seeing and treating patients with chronic illnesses using cannabis therapy. With his undergraduate major in communications, Dr. Gordon (affectionately known as Dr. Barry) has been a fixture on radio and television shows in both Northeast Ohio and Southwest Florida for over two decades. He has utilized these combined experiences to become a Statewide and National leader in the Medical Cannabis field, even being named a member of former Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried’s Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Barry enjoys fishing, spending time on the water, and anything related to Cleveland sports teams.
