    T.J. Wharton – Hitting/Strength Coach - Maryville College (148) Jan 07, 2020

    Just this past August, T.J received his Masters of Coaching degree from Ohio University. Before that he has made numerous stops on the coaching trail. After graduating from Catawba College, T.J. became the head coach in the Virginia Beach Collegiate League. He has served as a catching instructor at IMG Academy and was a performance science assistant with the New York Yankees organization. In this episode T.J. talks about how he balances being a hitting coach and a strength coach for his team, what he’s implemented so far at Maryville College, and his goals for the future.

    Jason Thompson - Head Baseball Coach Alamo Heights High School Dec 18, 2019

    Jason is currently the Head Baseball Coach at Alamo Heights High School. However, his journey as a coach started long before that. In this episode he shares how he has grown as a coach over the years. Starting last year, he implemented Blast Motion bat sensors throughout his entire program. Every player has a blast sensor and focuses on three metrics, Bat Speed, Attack Angle, and Rotation Acceleration. Jason has individualized drills for players based off of the blast data and their performance. Over the past three years he has also served as the President of the San Antonio Area Baseball Coaches Association, he talks about how important it is that coaches can collaborate with each other and why it was so important to him to be apart of the association.

    Coaching Youth Baseball with Justin Sherman - 146 Dec 12, 2019

    We often hear about what it's like to be a coach at the youth level. I wanted to bring on someone who is solely doing that, coaching youth players, to see what it's really like, and how we can make it better for the future of our game. On this episode we have Justin Sherman, Justin has his own training program, JustinTime Baseball. He specializes in coaching youth players ages 6-13 and describes what it's like to not only coach the players, but the parents as well.

    Ethan Newton - Hitting Coach Fairleigh Dickinson University - 145 Dec 04, 2019

    After finishing his playing career at Ohio University, Ethan had zero plans to ever get into coaching. However, the baseball gods had other plans. He went back home to become a substitute teacher and ended up coaching the JV baseball team at the high school with his dad for three years. After that he was able to get into coaching college baseball at the JUCO level and steadily climbed the coaching ladder to the division 1 level. He talks about some of the challenged that are at a school with a smaller budget and how you can still be creative and get just as much done. Ethan also dives into his hitting philosophy and what he looks for in potential recruits.

    Phillip Diehl - LHP Colorado Rockies - 144 Nov 26, 2019

    On this episode we have Phillip Diehl, Phillip is currently a LHP in the Colorado Rockies organization. This past season he made his MLB debut with the Rockies. On this episode we talk about his journey to the big leagues. Starting out as a pitcher who didn’t pitch much in high school, however was still able to go pitch at the University of Evansville before realizing after his freshman year that it wasn’t the best fit. He then had to transfer to Wabash Valley Junior College and explains what the JUCO process is like for a player. After a season at Wabash Valley he was afforded another opportunity to transfer again to Louisiana Tech before getting drafted as a Redshirt Junior. Phillip also takes us through what it was like to back a late round pick and still make it to the big leagues.

    Dan Gratz - Head Softball Coach North Iowa Area Community College - 143 Nov 20, 2019

    Dan is entering his third season as the head coach for NIACC. Previously, he was the director of softball operations at the University of Iowa. In this episode Dan talks about player development at NIACC and why he even brings in coaches from private facilities to help assess and write programs for his players. We also get into softball as a whole, and how it is still behind baseball on the player development side.

    Dr. Fergus Connolly - Human Performance Expert - 142 Nov 12, 2019

    Getting players to buy into what you're trying to build as a coach is everything. On this episode we have Dr. Fergus Connolly, a human performance expert, who has worked with every major sport at some point of his career. In this episode Dr. Connolly talks about some of the traits that the best coaches in the world show during practice and competition. We also talk about how to lead other coaches as a head coach, and how do you empower your own players? The human element will always be king, no matter what technology comes out. Once we understand how to get people to work together, we have something special.

    Robin Lund – University of Iowa Pitching Coach - 141 Nov 05, 2019
    Show notes

    Currently Robin is the pitching coach for the University of Iowa. However, just this past season (2019) he served as the hitting coach. From 2002-2018 he was the associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at UNI from 2002-2018. Robin taught anatomy and ran a biomechanics lab at UNI. Since Robin has a deep understanding of how the body works and takes full advantage of the current technology on the market. This has allowed him to develop players at a faster rate. After listening to this episode, I think you will become a fan of Robin Lund!

    Carlton Salters - Hitting Coach UTSA - 140 Oct 29, 2019

    Current hitting coach for the UTSA (University of Texas San Antonio) Softball program joins the show, Carlton Salters joins the show! Carlton is a former professional baseball player and also played SEC football at Arkansas. After his playing career he spent two seasons as the volunteer coach at Florida State for their softball program.     Alan Jaeger - Meditation, J-Bands, and The Yips - 139 Oct 22, 2019

    This is part 2 with Alan Jaeger. In this episode Alan gives the background on how J-Bands actually came about. We also get into the importance of having a routine that includes breathing and meditation. Why long toss can be so crucial for not only pitchers but position players as well. Lastly, Alan gives his take on the Yips and some ways that he has helped players beat them.
