Throwing Harder and Swinging Faster with Paul Nyman Jul 06, 2021
    Show notes

Paul Nyman is an Engineer who has a passion for player development in baseball. After starting his regular job in the technical world as an engineer, Paul retired in 1989. He started to come across different research articles on overload/underload training and ways to develop ballistic power. He started to realize that not many people were putting in the time and effort in the baseball world to develop players in a similar manner. With Paul’s background as an Engineer, he knew he could develop products that could help teach coaches how to train pitchers and hitters to maximize their capabilities as a baseball players. In this episode, Paul takes us through his research and experience in developing hitters and pitchers.

Paul’s company is called SetPro. His Twitter handle is @setprosports

Some of the questions that were asked:

Where did all of the new school pitching philosophy coming from?

If you were running a professional organization, how would you structure it from a developmental standpoint for pitchers?

What tools or products are overrated in the pitching world?

Similarities and differences in pitching and hitting mechanics.

What are optimal mechanics for a hitter? How does that change based on pitch type/location?

Where do you see baseball going in the next 3-5 years from an analytical and development standpoint?

If I had a son who WANTED to play Baseball Jun 29, 2021
    Show notes

What would I do if I had a son who wanted to play baseball. How would I go about it from a developmental and parent perspective. I played baseball as a kid and now have coached players from middle school to the MLB. I have seen what has worked and what hasn't. Below are a few of the topics that I will go over in the episode.

    Gymnastics at a young age

Play other sports if he wanted to, he’s in the driver’s seat

Give him the option to do other things if he wants to. I want him to be curious. Identity isn’t a baseball player. Separating baseball player vs person. Bad game?

Having fun, being a good teammate, and playing hard would be the goal during games. I know if this is the goal, he will play better. Not focusing on his own stats.

After and DURING the game. Remind him how much I love and believe in him. After a big strikeout, I’m looking for my Dad in the stands to see his reaction. Every son want’s his Dad to be proud of him.

At a young age, I would throw him CBs, a lot. Swing decisions often separate hitter’s in baseball. Not talent.

We would focus a ton of time on defense. Playing and learning multiple positions. Often forgotten and equally if not more important in some ways depending on the position.

Getting a strong foundation before high school. (Learning how to hinge, squat, move properly). I know I would’ve been a much better player had I learned to move properly at a younger age.

Strength, speed, and power. (Greg Rose. Under 22 is where we can develop speed. When they’re growing fast, train fast. Bones are growing faster than muscles. When you think of mechanics you start to slow down. Develop ballistic speed.

Recruiting process: What is the goal? Being honest.

No showcases until he’s ready. The focus is on development and having fun. If that’s not until he’s a junior then that’s when we go.

The #1 fear for most humans is what people might think of them.

How can we re-define failure in baseball?

What will happen if I don’t perform well?

Failure is the inability for us to not go for it.

We have to be able to use information well. It’s up to us on how we use it.

Co-Rumination and why it’s important for us to talk about our failure’s but not ruminate on it.

Cody Decker on Pinch Hitting, Data for Players, and Pulling Pranks Apr 06, 2021
    Show notes

Normally on the show we have coaches at various level who come on and talk about their current coaching situation, how they go about developing players, and give advice to everyone listening. However, I think it's just as important to have current and former players on the show to balance that out. I know I have learned a ton from just listening to players talk, they will tell you what pieces of information help and what doesn't. That is why on this episode I invited former MLB player, Cody Decker to talk about his experience as a player. Cody played for 11 years, mostly all in the minors, getting a cup of coffee in the show. Cody shares his experience not being able to get any data from his organization on himself as a player, and why it made sense years later.

    Other topics:

    • Tips on how to be a better pinch hitter.
    • Pulling a prank on a teammate that went viral.
    • What kids should be focusing on when hitting in the cage.

Jim Maciejewski - Developing High School Players, and the value of Consistency Mar 23, 2021
    Show notes

What makes high school baseball beneficial? To me it's actually closer to what college is like. Same teammates everyday, competing against teams in your league, and winning is relevant. It's important for the game that high school baseball is still held in high regard. No better way to find out what it's like to be in high school sports than to bring on a current high school Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach. Jim Maciejewski is currently the Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach at Mauldin High School in Mauldin, South Carolina. In this episode Jim talks about some of the problems he sees at the high school level, dealing with parents, how he runs his baseball program, and a story of a player who struggled in high school but continued to work and is now in MLB spring training.
