This episodes guest is Dr. Ben House from Functional Medicine Costa Rica.
This is Ben's second appearance on the ATSW podcast, having been previously on the show back on episode 119.
Functional Medicine Practitioner (CFMP). House was accepted to medical school without an undergraduate degree, but rescinded because during this time his father was fighting for his life with debilitating diverticulitis. The conventional medical model prescribed him pain killers, antibiotics, saltine crackers, and white bread. This pushed House to question the sick care model and look for the underlying lifestyle and dietary factors that could be the reason why his father was in so much pain. Lo and behold his father had Celiac disease and within a week of removing all grains and diary from his diet he was symptom free. This was Dr. House’s first taste of Functional Medicine and he knew at that moment that this would be his life’s passion. Since then he has studied under some of the best in the world and continues to regularly attend and present at conferences and seminars around the world.
As a strength coach, House has worked at both the high school and collegiate levels, including time under Coach Wright at the University of Texas Basketball. Besides practicing Functional Med, coaching, and writing articles for Functional Medicine Costa Rica, House has numerous publications in peer-reviewed, high-impact scientific journals. House blends his knowledge of research and Functional Medicine with years of experience working directly with a variety of different clients.

This episodes guest is Dr. Andy Galpin.
Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton.
Andy has a degree in Exercise Science, a Masters degrees in Human Movement Sciences, and a PhD Human Bioenergetics.
He now focuses his attention on teaching classes (Sports Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Designing Exercise Programs, Applied Strength and Conditioning, Athlete Assessment and Measurement, etc.) and running the BMEP lab (which studies the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force/velocity/power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. The team does this by taking muscle biopsies from non-athletes and elite athletes from different backgrounds (e.g. normal college student, MMA fighter, Boxer, Weightlifter, etc.) and use highly sophisticated laboratory techniques and equipment to address questions about single fiber "type", size, function, protein quantity, diameter, mitochondria, and myonuclear function. You can get all of our published research here.

This episode's guest is Alex Viada from Complete Human Performance.
Alex Viada, NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and USA Triathlon Coach, is the founder and co-owner of Complete Human Performance. A lifelong athlete, he has participated and competed in nearly every sport imaginable (some with greater success than others), since being dragged to his first swim meet when he was four years old.
Alex has close to 13 years of personal training and coaching experience with over 300 athletes of all ages and levels, in sports ranging from bodybuilding to ultra running to triathlon to cycling to powerlifting. He has also prepared close to 40 individuals for Ranger School, SFAS, BUD/s, and other selective military programs.
A graduate of Duke University, currently on hiatus from a Masters of Physiology program at NC State University, Alex enjoys lifting heavy things, biking, running long distances, and otherwise pushing himself to his limit (though his body is not always on board with the program). He is also an avid homebrewer, and if you give him much of an opening, he will happily bore you with details on hop schedules and yeast strain flocculation. You’ve been warned.

Firstly - My audio sucks dick on this episode - I was in between laptops at the time and the audio on my end didn't come out great. I fucked up the mic set up. Pat is crystal clear, and really that's all that matters.
Also you will hear me chopping some vegetables for a few minutes mid-way through the episode (27:00 to approximately 38:00) and because I was unaware of how the laptop I was using at the time was functioning regarding the audio set up - it picked up the sound of me preparing my meal. But fuck it the content of the conservation was too good for me not to post this episode. I have since sorted the audio and have acquired a quality mic, and since this episode the audio for all episodes since has been excellent.
Anyway....
