Full Show: Indiana's Loss to Maryland with Dane Fife + Colts Head Coach Search with Kevin Bowen Feb 01, 2023
    Show notes

(0:00-28:12) The Ride with JMV kicks off on a Wednesday! John opens the show with Indiana’s loss to Maryland. The discussion centers around the lack of help for Trayce Jackson-Davis, fouls and more. It looks like Tyrese Haliburton is going to come back against the Lakers on Thursday and Daniel Theis is inching closer to seeing the floor. John discusses the Pacers rebounding issues and where that production could come from. Then, he turns to a Colts head coaching update and why there was no way Sean Payton could end up in Indianapolis. Is it Steichen or Brian Callahan? Jeff Saturday? A petition seems unnecessary from JMV’s point of view. Finally, John talks about what the Pacers are doing at the deadline.

(28:12-40:49) John remembers how fun the video game Tecmo Bowl was in the late 80s before the conversation returns to IU ahead of their matchup against Purdue on Saturday. Are the Pacers a buyer or seller? JMV has a different word to describe the local franchise with the deadline approaching.

(40:49-48:30) JMV wraps up the first hour with the current odds for the next Colts head coach, the Hoosiers loss to Maryland and some comments from the lounge.

(48:30-1:20:59) To kick off the second hour, Coach Dane Fife joins JMV to first talk about domestic life nowadays before getting into what happened with Indiana in College Park last night. Dane talks about the consistency – or lack thereof – of Indiana and why Purdue is so consistent both at home and on the road. Dane and JMV talk about the growing pains of getting back to the highest level of the Big Ten and college basketball and the upcoming matchup against Purdue. Dane talks about his relationship with the current players and players dealing with outside voices. The conversation wraps up with a more extensive IU-Purdue preview.

(1:20:59-1:27:16) John discusses some news from the day.

(1:27:16-1:35:07) JMV wraps the second hour with Tom Brady’s retirement, the Pacers at the deadline and the Colts.

(1:35:07-2:11:46) 107.5 the Fan and Kevin and Query’s Kevin Bowen joins the show as he does every Wednesday. KB and John discuss the Colts head coach search. Where does Jeff Saturday stand right now? What are the reasons that Saturday is not in the running for the head coaching position? Then, they discuss why there was no interest from Jim Harbaugh’s camp in being the HC in Indianapolis and why that didn’t pick up any steam. The conversation ends with a head coach prediction, how quiet the Colts have been throughout the process and what Bowen thinks the best choice is before finishing with the Pacers.

(2:11:46-2:16:23) John gives out some shoutouts from his remote last week at Alley Cat.

(2:16:23-2:21:08) JMV wraps up the show and sets up tomorrow’s show featuring Trayce Jackson-Davis.

    Show notes

(0:00-16:45) Greg Rakestraw of the ISC Sports Network joins the show to first further the musical education of the listeners before turning his attention to a late tip off for the Indiana Hoosiers this evening. JMV and Rake preview the matchup, talk about IU’s current form and where more 3-point shooting might come from. Then, the conversation turns to the Butler Bulldogs and if this season’s struggles are just about one bad year or a foreshadowing of things to come. What about IUPUI? What is the status of the program right now and what’s the path to get more talent in the building? Including Indiana State, Rake discusses how mid major coaches are finding talent where others aren’t looking. John and Greg conclude with sectional action in high school hoops.

(16:45-38:33) Jason Belmonte, the No. 1 bowler in the PBA, joins the show to discuss his favorite Australian band before discussing the 2023 U.S. Open happening in Indianapolis at Royal Pin Woodland. Jason discusses how he compares himself to some of the best to ever do it and his place in the history of the game. Belmonte and JMV talk about the growth of the sport, access to bowling information and his parents’ decision to build a bowling alley changing his life. Naturally, the conversation turns to his two-handed approach, it’s origin and other successful players who have gone that route. The conversation concludes with Belmonte’s bowling heroes and a few stories from his time in bowling.

(38:33-56:29) ESPN Front Office Insider Bobby Marks joins the show to discuss the Myles Turner extension and what it means for both him and the Pacers. Can Myles still be traded? Yes, but Bobby says an extension followed by a trade that fast would be unprecedented. Does this outcome workout better for the Pacers than the result had DeAndre Ayton arrived in Indiana over the summer? JMV and Bobby discuss the premise that Indiana is the best fit in the NBA for Myles Turner. Is anyone better for him than Haliburton? Then, the discussion turns to the ultimate value of Haliburton when it times to pay him, what type of movement – if any – the Pacers will have at the deadline and what Buddy Hield is worth. The discussion ends with news and moves from around the league and how the NBA thinks about Trayce Jackson-Davis and Zach Edey.

    Show notes

(0:00-27:32) The Ride with JMV is rolling on a Tuesday afternoon. John opens the show with the news that Tyrese Haliburton could be back against the Lakers on Thursday night. The Indiana Hoosiers are on the road to take on Maryland tonight in a tough environment. JMV touches on Purdue, their freshman and what makes them ready for big moments in the Big Ten. Kevin Willard says that he thinks Trayce Jackson-Davis is the best player in the country. Just coach speech? JMV discusses the rest of the Indiana roster and finding things to lean on other than TJD. John then sets up the rest of the show, setting the lineup of guests, and talks about Frank Reich’s introductory press conference in Carolina. That leads to a conversation about the extensive Colts head coaching search.

(27:32-45:14) Greg Rakestraw of the ISC Sports Network joins the show to first further the musical education of the listeners before turning his attention to a late tip off for the Indiana Hoosiers this evening. JMV and Rake preview the matchup, talk about IU’s current form and where more 3-point shooting might come from. (1:13:52-1:29:11) In the middle of the second hour, JMV continues the head coach discussion and a Jim Irsay reaction to a bit done by Joey Mulinaro about the owner and Jeff Saturday. Is there anything anyone can do to pull Irsay out of Saturday’s corner? JMV talks about the idea of a petition for Saturday to not be the head coach and what kind of reaction Irsay might have to it. Should Colts fans take stock in Peyton Manning vouches at this point?

(1:29:11-1:37:35) JMV wraps up the second hour with the Lounge on YouTube and phone calls about the coaching search.

(1:37:35-2:03:38) JMV goes back to the phone lines to kick off the final hour. Colts quarterback is the topic of conversation. Does it make sense to bulk up at other positions this year in the draft and go after a quarterback in 2024? John returns to the newest coaching hire news of the day. With the hiring of Sean Payton and DeMeco Ryans, the Colts and Cardinals are the only two teams left without a head coach. The segment ends with more callers.

(2:03:38-2:22:15) ESPN Front Office Insider Bobby Marks joins the show to discuss the Myles Turner extension and what it means for both him and the Pacers. Can Myles still be traded? (2:12:51-2:22:49) – Following his conversation with Stephen Holder, JMV receives a tweet from a listener that teases some information regarding Jeff Saturday’s interviews with the Indianapolis Colts and recaps his conversation with Myles Turner from earlier in the show.
