This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew interview our newest RECing Crew member Chris “Fox” Wallace! Chris is a professional poker player, author, and poker coach. While primarily a cash game player, he also has over a million dollars in tournament earnings including winning the $10,000 buy-in HORSE World Championship at the World Series Of Poker for more than half a million dollars and has made day five and six in the WSOP Main Event. Fox has created video content for more than a dozen poker training sites, coached some of the best players in the world, and written three books on the game.

We talk about shifting from recreational to pro mindset, the effects of being ‘feared’ at the table, common ‘tells’ that players are less-experienced (and how to exploit them) and Fox shares some GREAT tips about how to extrapolate meaningful information from incomplete data sets - and how you can use that information to make good assumptions about different player types at your table and to play optimally against them.

Ep 551 - Chats: Mark Zhang and Combatting MTT Variance Jan 12, 2024

This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew interviewed recent RECing Crew addition Mark “Mr. Bullet” Zhang! Mark talked about growing up in Luxembourg and his early experiences with poker, from playing with friends in high school to using it as a means to pay rent during university. He explained how a pivotal win during the EPT in Barcelona convinced him to pursue a career as a professional poker player, and reflected on his mother's initial disapproval of his career choice and how her attitude changed after he achieved significant success in the game. Mark also mentioned his preference for online poker due to the higher volume of hands he can play compared to live games.

The conversation featured a detailed discussion about post-flop play, with Mark sharing insights on the challenges of navigating various bet sizes and opponent tendencies. The discussion also included analyzing opponents' playing styles, coaching resources, and common mistakes in poker strategy, with examples from poker vloggers and Mark’s own personal experiences. Mark also shared some thoughts on some recent scandals involving online cheating.

Ep 541 - Rebbecca Scales on “Raising Up” Women in Poker! Dec 08, 2023

This week Sasha Sutton and the RecPoker RECing Crew interviewed Rebbecca Scales! Rebbecca and the gang discussed a slew of topics, including the lack of marketing to women in the World Series of Poker and the resistance to change in the industry. Rebbecca also talked about the three main barriers that women face in poker: harassment, social norms, and daily responsibilities. Sasha and Rebecca shared personal anecdotes about their experiences with both positive and negative aspects of the poker world.

Rebecca discussed her journey before joining Poker Power, including her failed attempt at creating a clothing line for women in poker. She then shared her experience of creating a marketing studio called Poker Queen and talked about her work with Women's Poker Association and the Raise It Up campaign. Sasha and Rebecca discussed the golden age of women in poker and the dramatic change that has occurred over the last five years.

The group talked about the need for men to speak up against verbal harassment towards women and the importance of zero tolerance for any kind of harassment in poker tournaments. They also discussed how male players sometimes mistreat female dealers if they make errors in their dealing and the need for protection of the room for all players.

Rebecca announced the launch of Women Poker News, a media company that aims to provide a different perspective on poker content for women. She explained that women consume media differently than men and that the company will cover mainstream events and socialites in the poker world that are often overlooked by other media companies. Tommy gets right into sharing how he came to write the book, and some immediate benefits to Hold’em and Omaha players that follow his guidelines for a happier, less stressful, more profitable poker game. They discuss the potential downsides of playing fewer hands and Tommy makes an argument that a lot of those downsides are really upsides in disguise. They talk about Omaha specifically, and how it’s a difficult game to make preflop charts for, but how Waiting For Straighters as a philosophy can make a big difference in playing Omaha hands - with a few caveats and exceptions for paired or Ace hands.

This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew interviewed TJ Reid from Poker.Org! TJ shared some stories about his journey into the world of poker; from working retail and service jobs to playing full-time, and how he treated it like a small business by tracking his results and hourly rates. They also discussed the importance of not depending solely on poker for income and the definition of a recreational player.

TJ Reid discussed his passion for traveling and playing poker, and how his current role as a live reporter allows him to do both without financial stress. He also talked about the shift in poker reporting towards storytelling and finding interesting content to share with the world. Chris Jones and TJ discussed the success of new approaches to reporting in poker media, including initiatives like First-Hand Hands and Inside the Rail content.

TJ provided valuable advice for recreational poker players, highlighting common mistakes and stressing the importance of situational awareness and having a long-term plan for every decision. Ep 505 - Chats: Abby Merk on Playing, Reporting, and…Karaoke?!?! Aug 04, 2023

This week Jim Reid and the RecPoker RECing Crew interviewed Abby Merk about playing as a pro, creating content and enjoying the great game of poker! To start, Abby introduced herself as a professional poker player, advocate for female empowerment, and content creator. She discussed her passion for poker and how it is a game of strategy and competition.

Abby discussed her summer working with Poker News and how it allowed her to meet and become friends with her poker idols. She explained her content creation strategy and how her experience as a reporter and interviewing players about their strategies helped her improve her own game by learning about different approaches and perspectives. Abby also discussed her journey to becoming a professional poker player and shared a hand she played with Stephen Chidwick. She analyzed her betting strategy and decision-making process, discussing the range of hands Chidwick could have and ultimately deciding to fold on the river to a shove. The group discussed the importance of having a plan and being able to adjust it when necessary, as well as the psychology of bluffing and the social dynamics of poker. They also talked about what comes next for Abby and the importance of letting loose at a karaoke bar every now and then!

Jim announced the upcoming RecPoker Weekend and encouraged listeners to attend. He also mentioned a bounty placed on him by his friend and nemesis Phil in event number two and explained that only RecPoker members can participate. Chris Jones asked about becoming a member, and Jim explained that it's free and easy to sign up.
