Workers in Bessemer are “gonna start a movement” Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

After a year of workers organizing, signing union authorization cards, enduring constant union-busting efforts from management, and participating in an election, the historic union drive at the Amazon fulfillment center in Bessemer, Alabama, is coming to a close. Vote counting will begin on March 29, and we will know soon after if 5,800 warehouse workers in Bessemer will become the first unionized Amazon workforce in the U.S. Longtime poultry plant worker and current lead organizer for the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Mid-South Council Michael “Big Mike” Foster has been fighting with and for Amazon workers throughout the union drive. In the latest installment of our special TRNN series “Battleground Bessemer,” Foster explains why the union struggle at Amazon is so significant for workers in Bessemer, for their communities, and for the labor movement writ large.

Will we stand up for Black trans lives, too? Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

Last summer, during what some have called the largest social justice uprising in United States history, the lives of Black trans people were ignored. While many rightly raged against the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, few know the names of Black trans people like Kim Wirtz, who have also been murdered by a racist policing and prison system. In Baltimore, trans activists from the LGBTQ organization Baltimore Safe Haven protested, demanding an end to police violence and an end to the erasure of the Black trans community. The Real News' Eddie Conway talks to activists on the ground in Baltimore about their fight.

The union fight at Amazon is a fight for Black lives Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

In the latest installment of our special series “Battleground Bessemer,” TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez sits down with Joshua Brewer of the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Mid-South Council. Brewer is one of the lead organizers involved with the historic campaign to unionize 5,800 workers at the Amazon fulfillment center in Bessemer, Alabama. In this interview, conducted at the RWDSU Mid-South Council headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, Alvarez and Brewer talk about Amazon workers’ arduous path to get to this point, and they discuss what a union at the Bessemer facility would mean for a workforce and for a town that is majority Black or African-American.

    Show notes

Jennifer Bates was among the group of warehouse workers who initiated the process of forming a union at the Amazon fulfillment center in Bessemer, Alabama. Now, nearly a year later, Jennifer has testified in front of Congress and become one of the faces of the historic Amazon union drive that is currently underway. In the latest installment of our special series “Battleground Bessemer,” TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez sits down with Bates at the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Mid-South Council headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. Alvarez and Bates discuss the tireless efforts by workers and RWDSU organizers to make the union vote a success, to combat Amazon’s constant union-busting efforts, and to spread the word to workers around the world that it’s time "to stand up and stand out.”

Police Union Defends CONVICTED COPS Keeping Their Jobs Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

Why is it so hard to reform the police, let alone hold police accountable for abusing their power? What are the legal and political protections that have put police above the very law they’re supposed to enforce? On this week’s PAR, reporters Taya Graham and Stephen Janis report on site from Annapolis, Maryland, where a Police Union rally was held to push back against recently proposed legislation that would reform policing and revoke the Law Enforcement Officers Bill Of Rights. Then, we speak with veteran copwatcher Tom Zebra on the importance of filming the police and his almost 20 year-long fight for transparency.

This bodycam footage reveals all that is WRONG with policing Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

Video obtained by TRNN reporters Taya Graham and Stephen Janis highlights American law enforcement officers' lack of de-escalation training and respect for civilians. In this week's PAR, Graham and Janis investigate the questionable arrest of an immigrant cab driver in Toledo, Ohio, caught on body camera, which shows how quickly police resort to using unnecessary force and how much damage it inflicts upon the civilians they're supposed to protect.

The debt is too damn high! Mar 26, 2021
    Show notes

@Lisa @Dwayne I've gotta be in this damn board meeting at noon so could we get MSS up on Spreaker and then I can publish on the website as soon as I'm out?
    HED:
The debt is too damn high!
    SUBHED:
We talk with Umme Hoque of the Debt Collective about the push to cancel all student debt; then, we examine why we have failed to fight COVID-19 the way we fought polio or smallpox.
    WEBSITE/YT DESCRIPTION:
Americans are currently buried under a staggering $1.7 trillion in student debt, and many see no way out. This is why the Debt Collective, a debtor’s union, has organized the Biden Jubilee 100, a debt strike carried out by 100 people, one for each of Joe Biden’s first 100 days in office. In the first segment of this week’s “Marc Steiner Show,” we talk with Umme Hoque, Organizing Director of the Debt Collective, about the fight to cancel all student loan debt. Then, Marc is joined by Dr. Stephanie DeGooyer, a residential Burkhardt Fellow at UCLA and an incoming assistant professor of English at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Srinivas Murthy, M.D., a clinical care specialist in British Columbia and researcher at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, to discuss why the global response to COVID-19 pales in comparison to past, internationally coordinated efforts to eradicate polio and smallpox.

We Can’t Erase the Radicalism of the Rainbow Coalition Mar 19, 2021
    Show notes

It is an undeniably good thing that films like Judas and the Black Messiah are helping to disseminate the true story of the U.S. government’s coordinated involvement in the murder of Black Panther deputy chairman Fred Hampton. But there are many facets to that story that still need to be told and understood, especially when it comes to the Rainbow Coalition and the people who organized it. In this special episode of “The Marc Steiner Show,” Marc sits down with two founding members of the Rainbow Coalition, Henry “Poison” Gaddis of the Black Panthers and Hy Thurman of the Young Patriots, to dig deeper into the history of the Rainbow Coalition and the radical threat it posed to the white establishment.
Tune in for new episodes of The Marc Steiner Show every Friday on TRNN.

The WHITE ESTABLISHMENT rebels against COMMUNITY POLICING Mar 17, 2021
    Show notes

Every Thursday at 9:00 p.m. EST on The Real News Network, journalists Stephen Janis and Taya Graham premier a new episode of the acclaimed Police Accountability Report, a show that investigates police corruption around the U.S., as well as the grassroots movement to hold police accountable. This week, in lieu of a new episode of PAR, we have a special interview with Janis and Graham about their new full-length documentary, “The Friendliest Town,” which tells the story of Kelvin Sewell, the first African-American police chief of Pocomoke City, MD. When Sewell, a former Baltimore city homicide investigator and narcotics officer, instituted radical changes to Pocomoke City’s policing system, focusing on community policing over aggressive law enforcement, the results were stunning. Then, the local white establishment fought back.
