Chauvin trial 'felt like something because I’m used to so much nothing' Apr 27, 2021
    Show notes

Last week the country watched anxiously as Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd last May, was found guilty of third-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter, and second-degree unintentional murder. While many breathed a sigh of relief that some modicum of justice had been achieved for Floyd and his family, we were reminded of the continuing inhumanity of the U.S. policing system as Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Ma'Khia Bryant, and others were killed by police during and immediately after the Chauvin trial. When coupled with the fact that so few police officers are ever convicted of violent crimes, this all serves as a sobering reminder that we have a long way to go to get to justice.
In this important, extended panel discussion on “The Marc Steiner Show,” we reflect on the Chauvin verdict, the state of police accountability in the U.S., and the cultural and political backlash that is already taking shape. Marc is joined by Kali Holloway, columnist for The Nation and The Daily Beast, and the director of the Make It Right Project, a new national campaign to take down Confederate monuments and tell the truth about history; Stephen Janis, co-host of the Police Accountability Report on TRNN and director of the new documentary “The Friendliest Town”; and Taya Graham, co-host of the Police Accountability Report, co-creator and producer of the “Truth and Reconciliation” podcast, and producer of “The Friendliest Town.”

Vietnam, Afghanistan, Yemen: What is all this needless death for? Apr 20, 2021
    Show notes

Last week, President Joe Biden announced he will be pulling U.S. troops out of Afghanistan on Sept. 11, 2021, seemingly ending the longest war in U.S. history. But what does that really mean? What happens to Afghanistan next? How can we possibly make reparations for the destruction we’ve wrought, and will we do anything to address the machinations of a military-industrial complex that continually drives us into more wars around the globe? In the first segment of this week’s “Marc Steiner Show,” we dive into these and other vital questions with Matthew Hoh, disabled Marine combat veteran, senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, and member of the Eisenhower Media Initiative, and Danny Sjursen, retired Army major who served in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, director of the Eisenhower Media Network, and author of multiple books, including “Patriotic Dissent: America in the Age of Endless War.”
Then, the Saudi-led war and the war-induced famine in Yemen is the greatest humanitarian crisis in the world today—a crisis in which the United States continues to be complicit. In our second segment, Marc speaks with Iman Saleh, one of the Yemeni-Americans with the Yemeni Liberation Movement who began a hunger strike on March 29 to demand an end to the Saudi-led and U.S.-backed blockade of Yemen. As of this publication, Saleh has not eaten for 23 days.

A small-town hospital goes after its union nurses Apr 19, 2021
    Show notes

On top of the typical stresses, intense work, and long hours common to the profession, nurses working at smaller hospitals in more remote parts of the country face many unique challenges. With fewer staff and 24-7 services, facilities like the two Lehigh Valley Health Network hospitals in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, rely on nurses, nursing assistants, and other staff to perform many jobs simultaneously with little rest. But when nurses begin to leave for better working conditions and the hospital does not replace them, those who remain are put under even more strain, which endangers them and their patients. For workers with Schuylkill Hospital Nurses United, that's just the tip of the iceberg. In this episode, we talk with two Schuylkill County nurses, Brandee Brown-Seigfried and Chrissy Newton, and Seth Goldstein from the Office and Professional Employees International Union, about the day-to-day grind of working in small-town hospitals while also combating union-busting and bad-faith bargaining from management.

How militarism eats the poor and destroys the planet Apr 13, 2021
    Show notes

From endless wars and imperialist violence to racist systems of oppression and climate destruction, the battles poor and working people face around the globe are as daunting as they are numerous. What will it take to build a grassroots movement that not only combats these destructive forces, but understands them as fundamentally interconnected? In the first segment of this week’s blockbuster “Marc Steiner Show” (now premiering every Tuesday), we talk about what such a movement can look like with Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign and director of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice.
Then, in our second segment, we talk with Congressman John Sarbanes, U.S. Representative for Maryland's 3rd congressional district, who introduced H.R.1, the For the People Act, in the House of Representatives. Marc and Rep. Sarbanes discuss H.R.1 and what it would do to restore and protect voting rights in the U.S. They also discuss the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021 in the context of the ongoing trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed George Floyd.

America: The land of lost causes Apr 02, 2021
    Show notes

COVID-19 has put an incredible amount of pressure on higher education and its workers, including graduate students and contingent faculty who shoulder heavy workloads and make poverty-level or near-poverty-level wages. While simultaneously fighting to get universities to recognize them as workers, many graduate students around the U.S. are organizing, demanding, and even going on strike for better wages, benefits, and treatment. In the first segment of this week’s “Marc Steiner Show,” we speak with three graduate workers and organizers about what they’re fighting for and what these fights mean for the future of higher education: Rithika Ramamurthy, an English Ph.D. candidate at Brown University and president of the Graduate Labor Organization; Harlan Chambers, a Ph.D. student at Columbia University in the Institute of Comparative Literature and Society and member of the Graduate Workers of Columbia - UAW Local 2110 and the Columbia Academic Workers for a Democratic Union caucus; and Dylan Iannitelli, a sixth-year Ph.D. student in Biology at NYU and a steward for the Graduate Student Organizing Committee, the grad worker union at NYU.
Then, in our second segment, we kick off an exciting collaboration with Jacobin magazine by talking with Matthew E. Stanley about his recent series of Jacobin articles on the continued relevance of forgotten or understudied struggles in 19th-century America. Stanley is Assistant Professor of History at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia; he is the author of “The Loyal West: War and Reunion in Middle America,” and he has a new book coming out with the University of Illinois Press called “Grand Army of Labor: Workers, Veterans, and the Meaning of the Civil War.”

Georgia's new voter suppression law is rooted in Jim Crow racism Apr 02, 2021
    Show notes

Georgia Rep. Park Cannon was arrested last week as Georgia became the latest state to implement laws that restrict Black voters' rights. In response to alleged voter fraud, dozens of new voting laws have been introduced in states across the country, even though GOP officials and former President Trump’s own attorney have acknowledged they have no evidence to support said allegations. While the Democrats have majority control of Congress, they won't be able to pass legislation to protect voting rights unless they abolish the filibuster, a Jim Crow-era relic that was previously used to block civil rights legislation.
