The Supreme Court had just handed down its landmark Citizens United decision, fundamentally altering and corrupting the landscape of campaign finance. Meanwhile, the country was mere weeks away from the signing of the Affordable Care Act, a piece of legislation that would reshape the healthcare system and lead to Republicans losing their damn minds for years to come.

Doctrines come from the stories that a church or a political party or some other group tells about itself. In that sense, the stories people tell themselves create the reality that they believe in. Powerful stories tell them what’s true and what’s false. It gives them heroes and villains and victims, and an explanation for why things are the way they are.

And right now we are experiencing a huge war over who gets to tell the stories of what's happening. And for once, the good guys are winning that battle.
