When You Take It Upon Yourself to Stop a School Shooter Mar 20, 2024

Show notes

Episode Nine is here— and with it comes our very first HERO’S STORY.

Jonathan was just your average shy, emo 15 year old kid— until a schoolmate brought a 9mm to the classroom, threatening to kill everyone in sight. Thinking fast and knowing he wasn’t going to die a sitting duck, Jonny Boy took it upon himself to DISARM and BEAT THE HELL out of the would-be mass-murderer. All of a sudden, Jonathan was a national hero, even appearing on programs like 'Dr. Phil' to tell his story of bravery and strength. Sounds crazy, right?! Well, what’s even CRAZIER is that that’s just the BEGINNING of Jonathan’s story, as this heroic incident — while initially bringing him notoriety and popularity — led him down a confusing path of anxiety and self-destruction. Once again, Jonathan had to find the strength to confront the beast in front of him. And once again, he BEAT THE HELL out of it!

EPISODE EIGHT IS HERE! AND IT IS TOTALLY CRAZY! CRAZY EIGHT!

Who else has heard their fair share of horror stories about obsessive and paranoid young men emotionally and mentally terrorizing vulnerable young women? Perhaps some of you even have similar stories of your own— OR, if you’re REALLY unlucky, MAYBE you have a tale like the one told by today’s (anonymous) guest, who has the unfortunate distinction of having experienced THE CRAZIEST ONE OF THESE STORIES MATT HAS EVER HEARD IN HIS LIFE. Need we say more? Didn’t think so! Let us know in the comments if you agree with Matt, or if you’ve heard (or, gulp, PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED) something even worse! Welcome to 'The Private Record', where ordinary people tell their most extraordinary stories. New episodes every Wednesday!

"When You Crash Your Car On Ice and You Start Sinking" Mar 06, 2024

Show notes

Seven episodes in and we think it's high time for our very first EPIC SURVIVAL STORY.

Our guest Zach is an accomplished and experienced aerial photographer for movies and tv shows. One night after a long day of work on the mega-massive-hit show ‘Yellowstone’, Zach loads up his gear and begins his 3-hour drive through the serpentine Montana mountains, amid cold and icy conditions, back to his hotel for a good night of hard-earned sleep. But on a particularly dangerous and desolate stretch of road, Zach encounters a patch of black ice that has other plans for him. Next thing he knows, his truck is upside down atop a frozen body of water— at which point the ice breaks, and he starts to sink. Fast. Unfortunately for Zach, avoiding a horrible death by drowning in freezing water was only the beginning of his troubles. He did, however, live to tell the tale. And tell the tale is exactly what he does. Needless to say, Matt’s mind is blown. We think yours will be too!

When You Are Born Into An Unhinged Modern-Day Cult-- and Then You Escape Feb 28, 2024

Show notes

'The Private Record' - Episode 006 - "When You Are Born Into An Unhinged Modern-Day Cult— and Then You Escape"

Well. This is a wild one! Our guest (a kind, extremely tatted-up gentleman named Ben) was born and raised into a very strange, very scary, very secretive, and VERY little-known Christian sect called Gospel Outreach. By the time Ben turned 18, he knew he had to get out— so that’s exactly what he did. But it wasn’t easy! In fact, it was probably the hardest part of all. And now, for the first time ever, Ben tells Matt everything — the whole story — and it is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. Matt, for his part, is blown away, not just by Gospel Outreach’s wicked (and plain old weird!) ways, but also by Ben’s rare ability to tell his story with such clear-eyed perspective, and in incredible detail.

Call us crazy but something tells us the powers that be over at Gospel Outreach won’t be very happy with Ben for airing out their business like this! So let us know in the comments if you would like to see Ben in a follow-up episode, to discuss the fallout that is sure to come— as well as any other dark and dirty details he may have left out the first time around!

When You Run A Massive Fake ID Empire Feb 21, 2024

Show notes

Today’s guest (who asked to remain nameless, for reasons you will very soon understand) has a confession to make: when he was just a wee teenager, he became one of Southern California’s largest suppliers of fake IDs. As his ‘business’ rapidly expanded throughout the entire Golden State (and eventually beyond its borders), he became a folk hero of sorts to the thousands of kids aged 16-20 for whom he provided a ‘legal’ means for a good time. But as his legend grew and even some of his most faraway customers began whispering his name, so did the risk involved in his (obviously illegal) enterprise. Here, for the first time, he tells his whole story from beginning to end, and in the process, he utterly rocks Matt’s world. We think it will rock yours too!

Show notes

‘The Private Record’ — Episode 002 — ‘When You Are Kidnapped & Held For Ransom By Your Own Drug Dealer’

This week Matt connects with an Englishman named Lewis, who expertly recounts a harrowing story from his time as a drug-addicted youth— when he was accused of stealing a fat stack of cash from his dealer and subsequently held hostage, without food or drink (or a badly-needed fix!), until he came up with the money… which he didn’t have, and never even stole in the first place.
