Hi Plant friends and welcome to another episode of the PBN Podcast.
This week we meet Joanne Molinaro, also known as The Korean Vegan. Joanne is a Korean American, born in Chicago, Illinois.
When you consider her tasks and accomplishments, you wonder how Joanne manages to incorporate all of her work and play into a 24-hour period. She works at a large law firm, runs 30-40 miles a week, and creates a blog that has over 100,000 followers. On top of that, she’s managed to write her first book, which she hopes will be released by Autumn 2021.
Joanne also writes poetry and prose, with her writing appearing in Side B Magazine, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, and The Mashup Americans.
Joanne started her blog, The Korean Vegan, in 2016, after switching to a plant-based diet. In July 2020, she started her TikTok platform, mostly as a coping mechanism for the isolation caused by the global pandemic. Each of the simple recipe videos she shared included an accompanying family story, all less than 60 seconds. She's shared stories of her mother's immigration to America, her grandmother's escape from North Korea, interracial dating, and more.
In addition to her other work, Joanne has given cooking demonstrations, participated in fundraising events for North Korean refugees, and was invited to be the keynote guest speaker for the Korean Women’s International Network 2018 Conference.
