33: 4 Things You DON'T Need to Start a Photography Business Feb 08, 2023

Do you ever log into Instagram only to be immediately overwhelmed by the sheer volume of advice? The must do's and the tips telling you what you need to do, what you did wrong, and where you're failing—that you immediately want to log out and rethink your entire life?

The internet can make us feel like we're failing at everything … whether it's our diet, our makeup routine, our sleep schedule, or our work habits. For me personally, sometimes I feel like I need to dive into everything all at once, so I can "fix myself" before I start the thing I'm really excited about.

And I've noticed when this happens, I get stuck in a procrastination cycle. The kind of procrastinating you do without realizing it, actually.

And I bet you do it sometimes too. Maybe for you, it looks like…

…spending way too much time editing a shoot to be "perfect" ,but then you never end up sharing it.

…saying you can't reach out to 'X' client until you have a nicer camera or a better portfolio.

…searching for the perfect solution to every problem before it ever comes.

…waiting to start your business until you finally feel "ready".

Yup. I've been there, too. It can be so hard to know what to focus on when you're first starting your photography business, and shiny object syndrome is a very real thing. We can get so distracted by the things we think we "NEED" to do, that we end up spending all of our time focusing on the things that don't really matter.

When I was in photography school my teacher told me, "The only way you're ever going to comfortably make money is if you become a wedding photographer."

This was something I heard constantly when I was learning photography—that wedding photographers were the only ones who didn't struggle—and that my pipe dream of becoming a fashion photographer was just that… a dream… not realistic.

I just remember thinking… HOW is that possible?

There are TONS of different niches ... wedding photography can't be the ONLY one that's profitable, right?

The good news is, I was right.

Over the years, I've discovered that there are SO MANY major money making photography niches! The trick is finding the right one that speaks to you, lights you up, and helps you share your story.

What has this year looked like for you? What has it taught you? If I could show myself a year ago what 2022 was going to look like for me, I'm not sure I'd have wanted to see it.

To be honest, it's been hard. One of my hardest ever — and I know I'm not alone in that.

But as I've gotten older, I've gotten a lot better at seeing the beauty that, yes, while it was hard, existed. Shone through. Kept showing up, even when I didn't want to. And this year in particular has taught me a ton of lessons that I can't wait to share with you on today's episode.

So whether this year has been a hard one for you or your best yet, I hope this episode encourages you to think back on your year, think back on what it's taught you, and think forward to all that 2023 can be.
