    #933 - Will Kimbrough

The Will Kimbrough Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.

Are you here? If so, just know that we think your presence here is one of the best gifts you could give. We don’t take you being here for granted here on The Paul Leslie Hour.

We have an interview with the über-talented Will Kimbrough that went out on the radio airwaves years ago. The interview was recorded on November 18, 2006 at the famed live music venue Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia.

Now, Will Kimbrough is an artist very worthy of your ear. He’s one of those all-around musical artists. He’s got a commanding voice, but he’s also a gifted songwriter. As a guitarist he’s greatly respected, but he’s highly regarded as a record producer too. You’ll want to delve into his records, believe us. You listen to Will Kimbrough and immediately think — I need to listen to more of this guy!

It was just the first few years of Paul’s broadcasting career. Ha ha. Boy did he sound a bit like a rookie, but you’ll notice that Will Kimbrough gives a lot of great, interesting details. They talked about “Americana music,” Will’s Mobile, Alabama origins along with musical influences. Will Kimbrough also talks about his song “Piece of Work,” which Jimmy Buffett recorded.

Just as a heads up, Will Kimbrough co-wrote the song “Bubbles Up,” which will appear on the Jimmy Buffett album “Equal Strain On All Parts.” The posthumous album will be released on Mailboat Records on November 3, 2023. You can listen to Will talking about that song and more on Episode #15 of the Will Kimbrough Super Service Podcast. Check it out.

Before we get started here, why not consider giving yourself and others the gift of stories? You can do so by going right here. Paul has a lot more great interviews in store for you. Be one of the folks who keep this show going. Or maybe you’d just like to buy Paul a coffee? Okay. This recording needs to get out there. Will Kimbrough talking to Paul Leslie. Let it roll.

    #932 - Josh Kear

The Josh Kear Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.

Are you here? One of the things we like most about The Paul Leslie Hour is that we can uncover something that went out over the radio years ago and listen to it in the here… and now. People just like you listen to these interviews totally in the present. The present we’re in.

We’re going to give this interview with Grammy award-winning songwriter Josh Kear a spin. Back in 2007, three songs co-written by Kear entered the country charts: “That's How They Do It in Dixie” by Hank Williams, Jr., “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood and “Bama Breeze” by Jimmy Buffett. (Josh wrote the Buffett track with Chris Tompkins and Mark Irwin)

The same year “Before He Cheats” won the Single of the Year Award at the Country Music Association Awards. A few months later, it won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. It’s one of the longest-charting hits in Billboard history.

Josh Kear did this interview with Paul Edward Leslie to talk about some of his famous songs and also about “Blue Pearl Paradise,” his somewhat underground album of original island songs. Josh is such a nice guy he sent us the demo of “Bama Breeze” to play and we’ll all listen to that together.

Before you forget, remember to subscribe to Paul Leslie’s YouTube channel and also like this video and leave a comment. You won’t want to miss any of our interviews or reviews so ring that bell.

Now let’s hear from our special guest Josh Kear. Whatdya say? It’s time we listened. Together.

    #931 - Robert Greenidge

The Robert Greenidge Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.

Are you here? Dorothy said “there’s no place like home.” When you’re listening to The Paul Leslie Hour, we hope you feel like: “there’s no place like here.”

On this episode we’re celebrating Mr. Robert Greenidge. You’re about to hear an interview Paul did with Robert Greenidge in a hotel room the night before he was to perform with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. The conversation began with Robert’s solo album and from there went into a variety of directions.

Robert Greenidge is a man who has lived by and for the steel drum.

Sometimes called Robert G., he is a recording artist, entertainer and composer. He also fronts the band Club Trini along with partner and friend Michael Utley. He’s a member of the Trinidad-based steel drum band The Desperadoes. Robert has recorded with artists ranging from Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Robert Palmer, and others.

Robert has been a member of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band for 40 years—since 1983. With the unfortunate passing of Jimmy Buffett, many are asking what will become of the Coral Reefer Band without Jimmy? The Trinidad Express newspaper recently interviewed Robert, and he suggested the band may carry on. Remarking on the passing of Buffett, Greenidge said “Would he want the show to go? Absolutely! He would say, ‘rock on!’” Interesting idea, isn’t it?

Mr. Greenidge is about to share some great stories, but real quick—consider giving yourself and others the gift of stories. You can do that_ _by going right here. Paul has many more great interviews in store for you. Be one of the people who keep this show going.

And with that, let’s hear from Robert Greenidge.

    #930 - Gene Mitchell

The Gene Mitchell Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour.

Are you here? To be here is to be present, and the interview you’re about to hear feature a guy who is about as present as is possible. On this episode of The Paul Leslie Hour it’s a pleasure to present an interview with Sailor Boy Records and Sailor Boy Publishing performing and recording artist Gene Mitchell. A lot of people make tropical-inspired music, well Gene Mitchell is one of ‘em, and a one-of-a-kind talent. A joyful guy too.

You may recall the on-air beer tasting Gene did with host Paul Leslie. Well, what you’re about to hear is the time when Gene Mitchell, the big coconut himself called into Paul’s show. Now this was an old-school show. So Gene and Paul would chat a bit and then they’d spin one of Gene Mitchell’s songs. Now get this, Gene would stay on the phone while the song played and when the tune finished, Gene was still there and they’d talk some more. Novel concept, isn’t it?

Well, what we have for you is the talking part of that show and we’re putting it out there for you all. All of the episodes we release get distributed on Apple, Spotify, iHeartRadio and of course YouTube. The YouTube channel is growing like mad, probably because of all of the great content we’ve been releasing there. We just surpassed 3,000 subscribers. It’s free to subscribe and don’t forget to ring that bell.

I think it’d be worthwhile that we all listen to this one. Gene Mitchell should never be kept waiting. Let’s hear what Gene has to say.

    #928 - Jimmy Buffett

An Interview with Jimmy Buffett is presented on The Paul Leslie Hour.

    Are you here?

Jimmy Buffett was one of the all-time great storytellers. He did that in his many splendid songs, but he could also talk to the audience from the stage like no other. Like so many of you, we felt a great loss with the passing of this great raconteur. The stories he left behind are nothing short of astonishing.

However, there aren't so many long-form Jimmy Buffett interviews. That said, he did speak in great detail with Clay Eals for his book Steve Goodman: Facing the Music. Clay Eals worked with us in getting that interview to the masses in a fitting way. Thank you Clay Eals for thinking of our show as a home for this precious recording. Visit clayeals.com for more information.

This interview with Jimmy Buffett was recorded October 26, 2000. It's an honor to bring this to you all. It's presented in both audio format, and also as an audio with visual-text presentation. We invite you to subscribe to Paul Leslie's YouTube channel to gain free access to tons of independent media just like this.

If you’re here, just know that we appreciate you. Thanks for tuning into The Paul Leslie Hour.

We’re honored to present Paul’s interview with Lucy Buffett and Mac McAleer. This interview with Lucy and Mac was recorded at Lucy’s restaurant LuLu’s at Homeport in Gulf Shores, Alabama on March 10, 2007. It was originally broadcast on the radio, during the Stars Fell on Alabama festival.

LuLu’s is a place renowned for fun, food and music. No doubt, many of you heard the sad news about Jimmy Buffett, Lucy’s brother. Fun, food and music were a big part of his life as well. We were heartbroken to hear about Jimmy’s passing on September 1st.

If you’ve been listening to The Paul Leslie Hour you know how many people and events from the Jimmy Buffett world have been covered here. He said “heart breaking Paul, keep the stories coming.” Well ladies and gentlemen, that’s what we’re going to do. Please subscribe to Paul Leslie’s YouTube channel and don’t forget to hit the bell. On this episode we're taking you to Montgomery, Alabama for an interview focusing on the great Hank Williams considered the Father of Contemporary Country Music. Born on September 17, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama, Hank Williams began playing music after his mother gave him a guitar at 8 years old. Hank Williams learned his singing style in part from a blues street singer named Rufus "Teetot" Payne.

Williams went on to perform across the United States. He had many hit songs and was a favorite on radio and television. Hank Williams was and perhaps is the greatest country star of all times. Hank Williams passed away on January 1, 1953 at 29 years old.

Yet Hank Williams music continues to get new fans. His songs are known by everyone. You cannot get much more "American" in music than Hank Williams. His songs were covered by countless musicians from Johnny Cash to Willie Nelson. Patsy Cline to Jimmy Buffett. George Strait. George Jones. They all recorded his songs.

Even when people do not know the name Hank Williams, people from around the globe know the songs…"Your Cheatin' Heart," "There's a Tear in My Beer," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "Jambalaya," "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive," and of course "Hey Good Lookin'."

Hank Williams' legacy lives on at the Hank Williams Museum in beautiful Montgomery, Alabama where this interview was recorded. On this episode we are joined by Beth Petty. She’s the manager of the Hank Williams Museum. It is a museum filled with photographs, press clippings, and numerous personal artifacts belonging to the late Hank Williams including his personal Nudie suits, instruments and many fascinating exhibits.

We want you to be sure to go to http://www.thehankwilliamsmuseum.net There will be some upcoming event for Hank 100. You’ll find out about it there.
