Play Isn’t a To-Do — It’s the Thing That Makes Everything Else Work, with Dr. Kim Van Dusen Jun 10, 2026
    Show notes

If play feels like one more thing on your list, this episode is going to change that. Albiona sits down with Dr. Kim Van Dusen — registered play therapist, licensed marriage and family therapist, and author of Parenting Through Play — to talk about what play actually is, why parents have it backwards, and how a more playful approach leads to less defiance, fewer meltdowns, and a home that just feels better.

Dr. Kim brings 20 years of clinical experience and 12 years of parenting into a conversation that is practical, permission-giving, and full of ideas you can use today — even on your most exhausted days.

    Inside, they explore:

→ Why most parents misunderstand play — and why the parent who says “play isn’t for me” is actually the one who needs this most

→ The connection between play and behavior: why kids who feel connected through play are more likely to listen, cooperate, and follow through — and what happens when that connection is missing

→ How to handle tantrums, power struggles, and resistant kids using play-based strategies that actually work — including the sand timer trick and how to gamify chores

→ Why independent play matters more than most parents realize — and why boredom is a problem for kids to solve, not parents to fix

→ Practical play ideas for the transitions that drain you most: mealtime, bedtime, morning routines, and getting out the door — without the fight

    About Dr. Kim Van Dusen:

Dr. Kim Van Dusen is a registered play therapist and licensed marriage and family therapist with nearly 20 years of clinical experience. She is the author of Parenting Through Play, a research-backed, practical guide that combines play therapy, solution-focused therapy, and PBIS to help parents build deeper connection and better behavior — without the power struggles.

Rewards Aren’t Bribes — And Anxiety Isn’t the Opposite of Calm May 20, 2026
    Show notes

Two things keep coming up in coaching sessions right now, in household after household, family after family: rewards and kids’ anxiety around trying new things. So Albiona brought it here.

In this solo episode, she breaks down the real problem with how most parents use rewards (it’s not that you’re doing them — it’s how often), and reframes childhood anxiety in a way that actually gives you somewhere to go. Spoiler: the opposite of anxious isn’t calm. It’s self-trust.

And that changes everything about how you respond.

    Inside, she explores:

→ Why rewards work — and exactly where they stop working — including the novelty problem most parents hit two weeks in and what to do instead

→ How to choose the right motivation for your child, why sticker charts fail kids who don’t care about stickers, and how to use time, agency, and choice as rewards that actually land

→ The art of fading: how to gradually pull back rewards so the behavior sticks without the incentive — and why your kids are more resilient than you think

→ Why childhood anxiety isn’t the opposite of calm — it’s the opposite of self-trust — and how that one reframe shifts your entire approach to a kid who freezes, avoids, or shuts down

→ What to stop saying when your child makes a mistake in sports, school, or social situations — and what to do instead to help them get back in and try again

Please rate, review, and share this one with a parent who’s second-guessing their reward system or watching their kid shut down every time things get hard. These are the conversations that don’t get talked about enough — and the more parents hear them, the less alone they feel.

You Can’t Regulate Your Kid If You Can’t Regulate Yourself — Here’s Where to Start May 13, 2026
    Show notes

    Inside, she explores:

→ Why a dysregulated parent can’t help a dysregulated child — and what actually has to happen first before any parenting strategy can work

→ The two reasons most parents struggle to stay regulated in hard moments: not being able to access tools when it counts, and not having a plan to follow through on

→ How the PAR method works in real time — Pause, Acknowledge, Respond, Reflect — and what it sounds like with a toddler tantrum versus a teenager who won’t back down

→ Simple regulation tools you can use in the middle of a meltdown, including breathwork, body-based interrupts, and how to name what you’re feeling without fixing it

→ How to build a plan for the predictable hard moments before they happen — so you’re not scrambling, reactive, or white-knuckling your way through it

Please rate, review, and share this episode with a parent who’s tired of losing their cool and not knowing how to stop. Emotion regulation is one of the most overlooked parenting skills out there — the more this conversation reaches people, the better.

Your Brain Isn’t Broken — It’s Becoming - The Truth About the Postpartum Brain with Dr. Nicole Pensak May 06, 2026
    Show notes

    Inside, they explore:

→ What matrescence actually is — the neurocognitive developmental phase of becoming a mother — and why understanding it as an identity shift (not a breakdown) is the reframe new moms need most

→ The full picture of “mom brain”: why the forgetfulness is real, what the research actually shows about cognitive strengths postpartum, and why your brain deserves a lot more credit than it gets

→ How to tell the difference between normal postpartum adjustment and something that warrants support — and why Dr. Nikki’s answer is simpler than you think

→ The “bouncing back” myth: why the goal isn’t to return to who you were, and what it actually looks like to come through this developmental phase better than ever

→ Practical ways partners, family, and support systems can show up — including the single most protective thing a partner can do in the first three months

    About Dr. Nicole Pensak:

Dr. Nicole Pensak is a Harvard and Yale-trained clinical psychologist certified in postpartum mental health and the author of Rattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain. Why Kids Don’t Listen — And How to Fix It Without Yelling Apr 29, 2026
    Show notes

If you’ve ever found yourself repeating the same direction six times, voice rising, before your child finally moves — this episode is for you. The truth is, you don’t have a bad kid. And you’re not a bad parent. What you have is a defective pattern. And patterns can be changed.

In this solo episode, Albiona revisits one of the most downloaded and shared episodes on the show — why kids don’t listen — and goes even deeper with real-life examples, coaching language you can use today, and the mindset shift that makes all the difference.

    Inside, she explores:

→ What a “defective pattern” actually is — how kids collect data from their environment to decide when they actually have to listen, and why recognizing this changes everything

→ The repeating cycle most parents are stuck in — and how priming your child ahead of time breaks it without yelling, threats, or emotional spirals

→ The negotiation trap: why strong-willed kids learn to play the odds, how small moments of flexibility accidentally teach them to push limits, and what to do instead

→ Why your action matters more than your words — how to give yourself something clear and followable so you stay regulated when your child tests the new pattern

→ How to identify the pattern you’ve created, name the outcome you actually want, and build a new one — practically, without judgment, and in a way your child will respond to

How to Look for Signs & Talk to Kids About Death & Grief with Jenny Robinson Clark Mar 25, 2026
    Show notes

    Inside, they explore:

→ The reframe that changes everything: stop saying you "lost" someone—they're not lost, they're on the other side of a very thin veil, still here, still sending signs (and once you start looking, you'll see them everywhere)

→ Why kids are naturally more connected to the other side than adults—and how honest conversations about death (even when we're crying and fumbling through it) prevent the fear of the unknown from taking root the way it did for Jenny as a child

→ The signs Jenny's mom sends: owls, ladybugs, rainbows appearing out of nowhere—and the Costco parking lot story where a stranger tapped Jenny's shoulder to tell her about a ladybug on her back right when she needed her mom most

→ Why grief isn't linear (it comes in waves, and that's okay) and how riding the wave instead of resisting it opens you up to healing and creativity you didn't know you needed—plus the power of sign tracking (the more you pay attention, the more signs show up)

→ The mistake parents make when trying to "perform" the right answer instead of being honest—kids end up carrying the burden alone because they think bringing it up hurts us, so they stop talking about it

She lives in Nashville with her husband and their four children. A former dancer and actress, Jenny has always been a creative at heart. When she's not writing, she's homeschooling and baking with her kids, taking hip-hop class with her husband, and exploring the outdoors. She believes that when you open your heart, ask for a sign, and are willing to receive, loved ones send messages in the most unexpected ways.

Because here's the truth: death isn't the end. It's just different. Our loved ones are still here, still sending love, still guiding us. We just have to stay open enough to see the signs.

Stop Rescuing Your Kids: How to Build Frustration Tolerance & Resilience Mar 18, 2026
    Show notes

    Inside, she explores:

→ What stretching is—and why intentionally letting kids struggle through slightly uncomfortable situations builds resilience, frustration tolerance, and confidence (the opposite of helicopter parenting or overprotective parenting)

→ The critical question to ask when kids engage in undesired behavior (transition tantrums, meltdowns, refusal): what skill are they missing that would reduce this behavior's frequency or intensity?

→ How scaffolding works in real life: meeting kids where they are (the task feels too hard, they're overwhelmed) while still stretching them toward mastery—with examples from speech therapy sessions and everyday moments like zipping a coat or handling sibling conflict

→ Why letting kids struggle through hard things without rescuing them is one of the most loving things you can do—and how to support them without fixing it or taking the discomfort away

→ The real-life coaching example: a child making unsafe choices at school and using manipulation ("you're not listening to me!") to avoid consequences—and why the parents had to hold the boundary even when the child was upset, because stretch moments teach kids they have the power to make good choices no matter their environment

→ How to stretch yourself as an adult if you're a people-pleaser or overgiver: setting boundaries with loved ones without over-explaining, saying no without guilt, negotiating your worth, and getting comfortable being uncomfortable—because staying small to keep others comfortable is exhausting

    Resources & Links:

    Mentioned in This Episode:

→ Scaffolding: meeting kids where they are developmentally while stretching them toward growth and skill-building

→ Life coaching with Albiona (focused on unblocking patterns, setting boundaries, and building resilience for parents and individuals)

Please rate, review, and share it with a parent who's constantly rescuing their kids from discomfort, a helicopter parent ready to let their child struggle and grow, a people-pleaser who can't say no without guilt, or anyone ready to stop staying small and start stretching into growth.

Because the truth is: resilience isn't built in the easy moments. It's built when things feel hard and we do them anyway—and then we realize we're stronger than we thought. And our kids? They're stronger than we give them credit for.

Good Cop Bad Cop Parenting: How to Stop Fighting & Get on the Same Page Mar 11, 2026
    Show notes

    Inside, she explores:

→ What compensatory parenting is—and why disagreements about parenting styles push you into more extreme versions of yourself (the permissive parent becomes too passive, the harsh parent becomes too critical and controlling)

→ The real-life example: one parent over-explains, talks too much, and eventually gives in when kids protest; the other explodes with punishments that don't fit the crime—and neither is actually responding to what the child needs

→ The simple 3-step framework that works for both parenting styles: state the boundary clearly, express empathy without over-explaining, restate the boundary—then allow the child space to self-regulate

→ How to talk to your partner about co-parenting disagreements without it turning into a fight: come from a place of connection, not correction—stay child-focused, remain open, and ask "where can I give a little and where do you need to give a little?"

→ Why the more consistent and predictable your responses are as a team, the safer your child feels—and how getting on the same page transforms not just your parenting, but your partnership and your home

    Resources & Links:

    Mentioned in This Episode:

Please rate, review, and share it with a parent who's constantly butting heads with their partner about how to handle meltdowns, a couple stuck in the good cop/bad cop cycle, or anyone who feels like they're parenting alone even when their spouse or partner is right there.

Because the truth is: you don't have to parent the exact same way. You just have to stop compensating for each other and start focusing on what your child actually needs. And when you do that—when you parent as a team instead of against each other—everything shifts.

Episode 86: How to Handle Teenage Disrespect & Defiance with Dr. Cam Caswell Mar 04, 2026
    Show notes

    Inside, they explore:

→ Why "disrespect" is usually dysregulation—and how to respond when your teen talks back, rolls their eyes, or uses a tone you don't appreciate

→ The authority reframe: your job isn't to be right or have power—it's to carry the responsibility of de-escalating, listening, and modeling regulation (even when your teen is losing it)

→ Why connection is the foundation for good behavior, not the reward for it—and why taking away quality time when teens struggle backfires completely

→ How boundaries actually work with strong-willed teens: you can't control what they do, but you CAN control what you do—and that's where your real power lives

→ Why letting them make mistakes (even when you're terrified) builds trust and safety—because the tighter you hold on, the less you're actually able to protect them from poor choices, risky behavior, or shutting you out completely

This episode will challenge every assumption you have about what it means to parent difficult teenagers—and give you the tools to build the kind of relationship where they actually come to you when things get hard.

Emotion Regulation vs. Nervous System Regulation Feb 18, 2026
    Show notes

    Inside, she explores:

→ The key difference: emotion regulation is top-down (cognitive, in your mind) while nervous system regulation is bottom-up (visceral, in your body)

→ Why nervous system regulation must come first—it's the power source that creates space for emotional regulation (the software) to work

→ Practical tools for regulating your nervous system in the moment: 4-6 count breathing, moving away from the trigger, grounding your feet, cold water on your hands, ice cubes

→ The PARR framework mapped to regulation: Pause and Acknowledge are nervous system work, Respond and Reflect are emotion regulation work

→ Why kids regulate faster when we stay steady—they need to see the boundary held consistently to feel safe, and our calm nervous system teaches theirs how to co-regulate

This episode is packed with actionable strategies, real examples, and the kind of clarity that makes you think, "Oh, THAT'S why nothing else was working."
