161: [SELF] Don’t Make This Mistake in Your PA Career Dec 27, 2022
    Show notes

You know you can’t talk about working in healthcare – the nights, the weekends, the thankless job and the seemingly never-ending tasks… without talking about you, the human being who works in healthcare. It’s a lot to do, all while dealing with all the things you do as a person outside of your profession.

It’s awesome if healthcare is your calling, your passion, your profession and something you feel drawn to, but hopefully you can have some passions and pursuits outside of the healthcare realm as well.

Today I’m sharing a very important reminder that you are a person first and a PA second. Sure, being a Physician Associate is a HUGE deal and a major part of your life, but it’s not the *only* thing. You were a human being before you were a hero. You are a person AND a PA, not a PA instead of a person!

If you are a “healthcare hero” that wishes they were being treated with basic human rights, press play. If you are a PA who misses who they were when they were a person, press play… this episode is for you!

156: [WORK] How Writing & Publication Can Advance Your Career as a PA with Harrison Reed, PA-C Dec 07, 2022
    Show notes

The son of an English teacher, Harrison Reed debated English and writing, publication and journalism as a career alternative to being a Physician Associate. Communicating in written form is something that he found to be both necessary and a great tool to wield in the field of medicine.

Harrison has been clinical editor, associate editor, and acting Editor in Chief at The Journal of the American Academy of PAs (JAAPA). His research on PA turnover recently won the 2022 AAPA Publishing Award and his most recent venture, Harrison Reed Writing, aims to help PAs and other healthcare professionals achieve their writing and publication goals.

From thinking of that next article topic, drafting and writing the article and finding a great editor, he’s focusing on the impact that PAs can have through research, writing and publication.

Harrison is here to talk about the role we play in the larger society of life, medicine and PA life using writing as a tool. Whether you’re a published author or an aspiring writer who works in healthcare, this episode is for you.

153: [SELF] A Vulnerable Look at Gratitude and Personal Growth Nov 24, 2022
    Show notes

When I reflect on my personal journey with gratitude, I realize it has impacted my life on a seriously deep level, probably deeper than any achievement, money saving strategies or systems I’ve used in the past. As a Type A achiever I used to think that gratitude was a slippery slope to complacency.

I now know that gratitude is the cornerstone to launch your life into the next level. Gratitude and wanting to grow are not mutually exclusive. I know I’m not unique in this grappling with gratitude and growth. I love personal development and growth and now my gratitude practice is a part of that journey.

I think what’s super interesting about this topic, especially when it comes to achievement and appreciation, is that I’ve been doing this gratitude practice for years. Sometimes more consistently, sometimes less, and what I focus on, I find. When I’m consistently doing my gratitude practice I’m more grateful. Period. I find things to be grateful for even on the shittiest days.

In this episode we are diving into the deep end of gratitude, it’s raw (spoiler alert: I cry… twice), it’s real, it’s me thanking you and sharing why my heart has changed in this gratitude of arena.

152: [WORK] How to Leverage Your PA Skills and Years of Experience to Land a Raise Nov 22, 2022
    Show notes

For years I was underpaid as a PA – it wasn’t until *this* year that I realized I wasn’t being paid what I am worth, not because I’m not skilled, but because I don’t know how to negotiate well. I was busy doing surgery, rushing home to see my kids, and staying in my own lane, keeping my head down and cashing my paycheck.

But things changed when I got *super* burned out in the middle of a global pandemic. I was disconnected from my work, actually physically ill and emotional past the point of no return and I quit my job. As I’ve navigated these last two years it’s become clear to me that PAs are providing huge economic value to practices, improving patient care, and it’s mind-blowing how poorly we are compensated.

I’m sharing the five most common mistakes that PAs make when asking for a raise. You deserve more. You are worth more. These negotiation mistakes and what to do instead are going to help you craft a pitch that will land you that raise, better hours, admin time, and maybe even another PA in your office to share the load.

I’d avoided my own negotiations too long, because… sweaty armpits and *I work with surgeons*... but creating a plan for negotiating and executing it, even with nerves, ended up being one of the biggest blessings to our family.
