We finally made it, my friends. After eleven chapters of talking about muscle, metabolism, and building a strong foundation, it’s time to tackle the topic many of you have been waiting for: fat loss!

And no, I’m not about to hand you a sad little salad and tell you to make peace with the treadmill.

In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, I’m sharing Chapter 12 of my upcoming book, Fully Alive. We’re diving into Phase Two of the blueprint: Accelerated Fat Loss - and how to approach it while protecting the muscle, strength, energy, and habits you’ve worked so hard to build.

Because the goal isn’t to win a contest for who can eat the least. The goal is to build a lean, strong, capable body that supports the life you want to live.

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    · Why fat loss is a season, not a permanent way of life

    · What it means to “protect the engine” while losing body fat

    · Why strength training, protein, daily movement, and sleep still matter during a fat-loss phase

    · How to find a calorie-deficit sweet spot that supports steady progress

    · Why the bathroom scale gets one vote, rather than the final say

    · What everyday weight fluctuations can—and can’t—tell you

    · How to recognize when it’s time to end your fat-loss season and move toward Lifestyle Integration

If you’re tired of starting over every Monday, this chapter will help you think differently about what lasting progress can look like.

I’d love your feedback! Fully Alive is still a work in progress, and hearing from you helps me make it better. What resonated with you? Was there anything you’d like me to explain more clearly? Reach out and let me know.

And if this episode brought someone to mind who’s stuck on the diet roller coaster, share it with them. They might need to hear that there’s another way.

Thanks for listening - and remember… we’re building a body that helps you live fully alive.

Behind the Book: Chapter 11 - Want to Lose Weight After 50? Stop Dieting First. Oct 21, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

You want to lose twenty pounds. Your coach’s first instruction? Stop trying to lose weight.

    Wait… what?

If you’ve spent years eating less, pushing harder, and losing and regaining the same weight, that advice might sound backward. But another restrictive diet may be skipping the very thing you need: a stronger foundation.

In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, Kevin English returns to his upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life, with Chapter 11: Phase One—Metabolic Restoration, kicking off Part III: The Blueprint.

This chapter explores what it means to rebuild before reducing: nourishing your body, supporting muscle, restoring consistency, and preparing for a more sustainable approach to fat loss.

And no, eating enough doesn’t mean backing a dump truck full of nachos into the driveway.

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    · Why preparation deserves a place in your fat-loss plan.

    · What metabolic restoration means—and how it differs from permission to overeat.

    · Five goals for this phase: better energy, muscle support, consistency, a healthier relationship with food, and renewed trust.

    · Why strength training, protein, walking, sleep, and recovery form the foundation.

    · Signs that you may be ready to transition into a fat-loss phase.

    · How to recognize meaningful progress when the scale hasn’t budged.

    · Why ordinary habits deserve more credit than another dramatic Monday restart.

Your challenge this week: Choose one measure of progress that has nothing to do with your weight. Track your energy, strength, sleep, or consistency—and give yourself credit for the improvements.

    Help shape Fully Alive
You’re hearing this book while it’s still a work in progress, and your feedback matters. Does rebuilding before reducing make sense? Does eating more after years of dieting feel intimidating? What would you like explained more clearly?

Email Kevin your feedback at coach@silveredgefitness.com.

Coming next in the book series: Phase Two—Accelerated Fat Loss, where we’ll explore a strategic approach built on the foundation established here.

If this episode made you think of someone who’s exhausted from starting over, send it their way.

Your next chapter doesn’t have to begin with another diet. It can begin with building a body - and a life—you love.

More Than Longevity: Building a Life You Love After 50 w/ Dr. Kyle Hulsebus Oct 14, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

What do you want your health for?

To travel without worrying about keeping up? Play with your grandkids? Pursue a passion you’ve put on hold? Build a second half of life that you’re genuinely excited to live?

This week, we’re taking a brief break from our Fully Alive book series for a conversation that fits perfectly with everything we’ve been exploring: building a strong, healthy, capable body—and giving yourself something meaningful to do with it.

Kevin sits down with Dr. Kyle Hulsebus, a third-generation chiropractor, author, and Health and Human Potential Specialist, to explore purpose, identity, and the possibilities of life after 50.

Together, they ask what health means beyond symptoms and numbers, explore the uncertainty that can accompany retirement, and challenge the assumption that our best years are already behind us.

Dr. Kyle also shares ideas from his 40 Over 40 framework, including a few you probably won’t find on your usual fitness checklist: dancing, stargazing, playing games, and stepping away from your phone.

And wait until you hear about his 104-year-old patient who had places to go, people to see, and absolutely no time for a sore back.

    In this episode, we explore:

    · Health with a purpose: Looking beyond a goal weight to the experiences and abilities you actually want.

    · Identity and lasting habits: Becoming someone who values taking care of themselves.

    · Life after retirement: Finding meaningful work, connection, and direction beyond your career.

    · Your next peak: Questioning the belief that your greatest accomplishments belong in the past.

    · Everyday ways to engage with life: Breathing intentionally, dancing, playing, and making room for wonder.

    · Longevity and quality of life: Considering how the pursuit of more years fits with enjoying the days you have.

    · Technology and our future: A conversation about AI, human connection, and changing sources of purpose.

    · The legacy you’re creating: Recognizing the influence of everyday interactions and encouragement.

    Your challenge this week

    Finish this sentence:

“I want to be strong and healthy so I can…”

Be specific. Write it down. Then take one small step toward that experience this week—whether that’s planning a hike, calling a friend, or signing up for something you’ve always wanted to try.

Behind the Book: Chapter 10 - You Don’t Really Want to Lose Weight - You Want Your Life Back Oct 07, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

What if you hit your goal weight… but still didn’t have the energy, strength, or confidence to live the life you wanted?

Would that really feel like success?

In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, Kevin English continues reading from his upcoming book, Fully Alive, with Chapter 10: “The New Goal - Strong, Healthy, and Capable.”

This chapter wraps up Part II - Build a Body - with a question that changes the entire conversation: What are we actually trying to build?

A lower number on the scale might be part of your goal. But chances are, what you really want is the freedom to travel, play with your grandkids, enjoy your hobbies, and remain independent for decades to come.

And “weigh less” doesn’t give you much of a blueprint for any of that.

Kevin explores a more useful North Star: strong, healthy, and capable. It’s a way to recognize meaningful progress, make better daily decisions, and build an identity that lasts beyond your next diet.

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    • Why weight loss often stands in for something deeper—energy, confidence, freedom, and participation.
    • How useful strength shows up outside the gym, from carrying groceries to getting off the floor.
    • Why looking healthy and living well aren’t always the same thing.
    • What a client’s month-long European adventure reveals about the real payoff of fitness after 50.
    • How shifting from “What do I want to lose?” to “Who do I want to become?” changes your approach.
    • Three simple questions to help guide your choices when motivation fades or life gets messy.

    Your takeaway challenge
Ask yourself: “What do I want my body to allow me to do?” Pick something specific. Hike with your spouse. Keep up with your grandchildren. Travel with confidence. Get back to an activity you miss. Then consider one small action you can take this week to support that future.

Because being able to say yes to an adventure is a pretty great return on your workout investment.

    Help shape Fully Alive
You’re hearing a book in progress, and your feedback matters. What resonated in this chapter? What felt repetitive or needed more explanation? And what do you want your body to help you keep doing—or start doing again?

Email coach@silveredgefitness to share your thoughts with Kevin. Honest feedback is welcome - even if your review includes, “You lost me here, and I started thinking about lunch.”

    Coming next: Part III—The Blueprint
Next episode, we move from the vision to the process, beginning with Phase One: Metabolic Restoration—and why rebuilding the foundation comes before chasing fat loss.

Behind the Book: Chapter 9 - Why You Cannot Outrun Your Fork Sep 30, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

What if the problem isn’t that you need more cardio - but that you’ve been expecting cardio to do a job it was never designed to do?

For years, Kevin believed the answer to weight loss was simple: run more, train harder, and burn more calories. And he didn’t just talk the talk - he ran marathons, completed triathlons, and logged countless hours of training.

But eventually, he learned an important lesson - cardio is one of the best things you can do for your health - and one of the most overrated tools for fat loss.

In this installment of the Behind the Book series, Kevin reads Chapter 9 of his upcoming book, Fully Alive: Why You Can’t Outrun Your Fork.

This chapter exposes the “treadmill trap” - the exhausting cycle of eating, exercising to compensate, getting hungrier, pushing harder, and wondering why the results never match the effort.

You’ll discover why exercise should never be punishment for what you ate, why calories are much easier to consume than burn, and why simple daily movement may be more valuable than another punishing workout.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why cardio burns fewer calories than most people imagine
    • How harder workouts can increase hunger and trigger compensation
    • Why exercising more doesn’t always create the expected calorie deficit
    • The important difference between exercise and daily movement
    • Why walking is one of the most powerful—and underrated—healthy-aging habits
    • How the “treadmill trap” damages your relationship with food and exercise
    • What exercise is actually for if calorie burning isn’t the main goal
    • Why strength, mobility, resilience, and independence matter more than the number on the scale
    • How to shift from asking, “How many calories did I burn?” to “What am I building?”
    • Why the ultimate goal of fitness after 50 is freedom

Cardio is not the enemy. The problem is expecting cardio to erase your food, fix your nutrition, or exhaust you into the body you want.

You don’t need to earn your meals. You don’t need to repay every indulgence with another trip to the treadmill. And you don’t need to spend the rest of your life trying to outrun your fork.

You need a sustainable approach that helps you build a strong, healthy, capable body - one that gives you the freedom to fully participate in your life.

    Help Shape Fully Alive
Kevin is sharing these chapters before the book is published, and your feedback is helping shape the final manuscript.

What connected with you in this chapter? Have you ever felt like you needed to exercise just to maintain your weight - or used cardio to compensate for what you ate?

Behind the Book: Chapter 8 — Food Is Fuel, Not the Enemy Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

What emotions come to mind when you think about food?

For far too many people, the answer isn’t nourishment, enjoyment, or gratitude. It’s guilt, fear, anxiety, confusion, and shame.

After decades of conflicting nutrition advice - don’t eat fat, don’t eat carbs, skip breakfast, eat six meals a day, avoid fruit - it’s no wonder so many of us have come to see food as a threat rather than a resource.

In this episode of the Behind the Book series, Kevin reads Chapter 8 of his upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.

This chapter explores a powerful mindset shift: moving away from restriction, punishment, and fear -and learning to view food as fuel for the body and life you’re trying to build.

Kevin explains why calories matter - but aren’t the whole story - how chronic under-fueling may be affecting your energy, strength, recovery, cravings, and metabolism, and why the question isn’t simply, “How little can I eat?” but rather, “How well can I nourish myself?”

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    • How decades of conflicting nutrition advice created widespread food fear and confusion
    • Why labeling foods as “good” or “bad” can damage your relationship with eating
    • The important difference between fearing food and respecting it
    • Why food provides far more than calories
    • How food influences hunger, fullness, energy, recovery, performance, and body composition
    • Why the quality and quantity of your food both matter
    • Common signs that you may be chronically under-fueling
    • How prolonged restriction can affect energy, cravings, strength, mood, and recovery
    • Why eating less isn’t always the answer—especially after 50
    • What it means to approach nutrition with a builder’s mindset
    • How to make food important without allowing it to consume your thoughts
    • The liberating question that can transform your relationship with food: “How well can I nourish myself?”

Kevin wants your honest opinion - does Chapter 8 earn its place in Fully Alive?

Did it offer a useful new perspective on nourishment and under-fueling? Did it deepen the book’s message - or did it feel like territory that had already been covered?

Send Kevin your feedback and help shape the final version of Fully Alive. Don’t hold back. He wants the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Behind the Book: Chapter 7 – Your Muscle Retirement Account Sep 16, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

What if one of the most important things you could do for your future had nothing to do with losing weight?

What if you should be paying more attention to building muscle?

In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, I’m continuing my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 7 of my upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.

And this chapter is called Muscle Changes Everything.

For decades, we’ve been taught to think about muscle as something cosmetic - big biceps, six-pack abs, bodybuilders, athletes, and gym rats.

But especially after 50, muscle is about something much bigger.

    Muscle is capacity.
    Muscle is resilience.
    Muscle is protection.
    Muscle is freedom.

It helps determine whether you can climb the stairs, carry your luggage, get off the floor, play with your grandkids, recover from illness or injury, travel, stay active, and continue saying YES to life.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • Why muscle is far more than cosmetic tissue
    • Why getting lighter isn't necessarily the same thing as getting healthier
    • How muscle protects your independence and freedom
    • The idea behind your Muscle Retirement Account
    • Why strength training after 50 is an investment—not punishment
    • How small physical investments compound over decades
    • Why your ability to remain active later in life is being built right now
    • The incredible story of a woman who began lifting at 70 and became a world-record powerlifter
    • Why it's never too late to become stronger
    • And why building muscle may be one of the best investments you can make in your next 30 years

    I Want Your Feedback
Fully Alive is still being written and revised - and you're getting a behind-the-scenes look at the book before the finished version ever hits the shelves. And I genuinely want your help making it better.

What resonated with you in this chapter? Did the Muscle Retirement Account change the way you think about strength training? Was there something you disagreed with, wanted me to explain better, or wished I had gone deeper on? Or did this chapter remind you of your own story?

    Email me at coach@silveredgefitness.com.

I personally read your messages, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.

And if you know somebody who still thinks lifting weights after 50 is just about looking good... send them this episode.

Because we're not building muscle just to change what we see in the mirror. We're building it so that 10, 20, and 30 years from now, we still have the strength, capacity, independence, and freedom to fully participate in our lives.

Behind the Book: Chapter 6 - Stop Trying to Lose Weight Sep 09, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

What if the goal that's been driving your health and fitness journey for years... is actually the wrong goal?

If you've spent the last decade - or maybe several decades - trying to lose the same 10, 20, or 30 pounds, this episode may completely change the way you think about your body.

This week on The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, we're continuing the special Behind the Book series with a first look at Part II - Building a Body from my upcoming book, Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.

And we're kicking off Part II with a statement that probably sounds a little crazy coming from a health and fitness coach: Stop trying to lose weight.

    Seriously.

Because here's the truth - nobody really wants weight loss. You don't actually want a smaller number on your bathroom scale. You want what you believe that smaller number will give you.

More energy. More confidence. Better health. Freedom. Strength. Capability. The ability to travel, hike, play with your grandkids, get up off the floor, carry your own luggage, and keep saying YES to life.

So maybe it's time to stop making weight loss the mission.

Maybe it's time to start building a body.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • Why focusing on weight loss can actually lead you toward the wrong behaviors
    • Why losing 20 pounds isn't really what most people want
    • The hidden problem with making a number on the scale your ultimate goal
    • Why traditional weight-loss goals come with a dangerous built-in finish line
    • The difference between changing your weight and changing your identity
    • Why “I'm trying to get healthy” and “I'm a healthy person” are two very different mindsets
    • How your identity influences your daily choices
    • Why lasting transformation is about becoming, not dieting
    • The question that's far more powerful than “How much weight do I want to lose?”
    • Why your new mission should be about the next 30 years, not the next 30 pounds
    • How shifting from shrinking to building can change the trajectory of your second half

📖 Help Me Make Fully Alive Better
This book is still a work in progress, and the feedback I've received from listeners throughout this Behind the Bookseries has been phenomenal.

    Please keep it coming!

What resonated with you in this chapter? Did anything challenge the way you've thought about weight loss? Have you experienced the shift from “trying to lose weight” to becoming someone who simply lives like a healthy, active person? Or was there something you disagreed with, didn't understand, or wanted me to explore more deeply?

I want to hear all of it!

    📧 Email me at coach@silveredgefitness.com

I personally read your emails, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive before it goes to print.

    Coming Next...
Next week, we'll continue Part II — Building a Body — with Chapter 7:

    Muscle.

Behind the Book: Chapter 5 — Why “Eat Less, Move More” Stops Working Sep 02, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

    Eat less. Move more.

For decades, that’s been the default prescription for weight loss.

And to be fair... it sounds perfectly logical.

If you want to lose weight, eat fewer calories and burn more calories.

But if the formula is really that simple, why are so many intelligent, motivated people still struggling? Why do we keep losing and regaining the same 10, 20, or 30 pounds? And why does it seem to get harder every time - especially after 50?

In this episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, I continue my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 5 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.

Chapter 5 is called “Why Eat Less and Move More Stops Working.” And this chapter represents an important turning point in the book. Because the problem isn't that you need to try harder. You may simply be trying to solve a building problem with a shrinking strategy.

Most traditional diets are built around subtraction: Eat less. Cut calories. Remove carbs. Do more cardio. Burn more. Weigh less. Get smaller.

But think about what you actually want from your body in the second half of life. More strength. More energy. More muscle. More confidence. More resilience. More freedom. More capability.

Those aren't shrinking goals. They're building goals.

In this episode, we'll explore why the traditional eat-less-and-move-more formula eventually breaks down, why doubling down with even more restriction and cardio can leave you frustrated and exhausted, and why sustainability matters far more than short-term results.

    I Want Your Feedback!
Fully Alive is still being edited and refined, and you're getting a behind-the-scenes look at the book before the final version is published. So I'd genuinely love to hear from you.

What resonated? What challenged you? What didn't make sense? What would you like me to explore more deeply? And have you personally experienced the cycle of eating less, exercising more, losing weight... and eventually gaining it back?

Send me your thoughts, stories, questions, and feedback at: coach@silveredgefitness.com

I personally read every email, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.

And if you know someone over 50 who's still stuck believing they just need to eat less, move more, and try harder, please share this episode with them.

Because maybe they don't need more willpower. Maybe they need a better blueprint.

Behind the Book: Chapter 4 - Is My Metabolism Broken? Aug 26, 2026
    Show notes

Text us a comment or question!

If you're over 50 and you've ever said - or even thought - "My metabolism is broken," this episode is for you.

This week, I'm continuing my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 4 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life.

And in this chapter, we're tackling one of the biggest - and most discouraging - beliefs in the over-50 health and fitness world - that aging has somehow broken your metabolism.

Because let's face it… it can certainly feel that way.

You eat less. You exercise more. You try harder. And somehow the strategies that worked at 30 or 40 don't seem to work anymore.

    So what happened?

In this chapter, I'll explain why your metabolism isn't some mysterious force conspiring against you - and why "broken" may be completely the wrong way to think about what's happening inside your body.

Instead, we'll explore a much more powerful idea - Adaptation.

Your body is constantly responding to the environment you create and the signals you send it.

Years of restrictive dieting. Loss of muscle. Reduced activity. Poor sleep. Stress. Repeated cycles of losing and regaining weight. Your body notices all of it - and adapts accordingly.

But here's the incredibly good news - adaptation works both ways.

The same body that adapted to years of restriction and inactivity can begin adapting to strength training, better nutrition, movement, recovery, and consistency.

Your body isn't finished at 50. Or 60. Or 70.

    It's still listening.

    In This Episode, You'll Learn:

    • What metabolism actually is—and what it isn't
    • Why having a "slow metabolism" is more complicated than most people realize
    • Why weight loss can become more difficult even when you're eating less
    • How years of dieting can change the environment your body is responding to
    • Why muscle loss and declining activity matter so much after 50
    • The difference between metabolic damage and metabolic adaptation
    • Why the bathroom scale can convince you nothing is working—even when your health is improving
    • Why trying to force your body to lose weight may be the wrong approach
    • How strength training, movement, nutrition, recovery, and consistency send your body new signals
    • Why your goal isn't to get your 25-year-old metabolism back
    • And why the body you have today may be far more capable of change than you've been led to believe

    The big takeaway?

Stop asking "Is my metabolism broken?"

Start asking "What has my metabolism been responding to?"

Because once you stop treating your body like the enemy, you can begin creating an environment that encourages it to thrive.

And that's where things get exciting.

📖 You're Helping Me Write This Book!

Fully Alive is still being revised - and you're getting to hear it before the final version goes to print. That means I want your feedback.

What resonated with you? What challenged something you believed? Was anything confusing? Did I leave something out? Do you have a story or experience that relates to this chapter?

Send me an email at coach@silveredgefitness.com.

I personally read your emails, and your feedback may help shape the final version of Fully Alive.

And if you know somebody who's convinced their metabolism is broken, share this episode with them. They may not need another diet. They may simply need to understand that their body hasn't betrayed them.

Thanks for being part of this journey with me.

Now let's keep building the strongest, healthiest, most meaningful second half of our lives!
