Is Fashion Or Home Decor More Important Than Our Coral Reefs Jul 25, 2013
    Show notes

When the Gulf Oil spill happened, the public was outraged. There was a worldwide outcry of concern for marine life and marine preservation as the Gulf Oil spill contaminated miles of pristine ocean and its surrounding areas. However, there is an even bigger problem affecting marine life. It is being done for the sake of fashion and exotic home décor. An estimated 70-90% of marine aquariums are collected illegally using poisonous cyanide. Other poisons such as bleach, formalin, and gasoline are also used. This not only reduces biodiversity but also removes key components of the reef ecosystem, including algae grazers, which help maintain ecosystem health. Coral reefs contain some of the largest diversity of life in the world. They are home to thousands of different plants and animals. For example, coral reefs in the Florida Keys sustain 500 species of fish, more than 1700 species of mollusks, five species of sea turtles, and hundreds of species of sponges. Did you know that fish feel pain, as do crustaceans and other invertebrates? Coral reefs are typically found at a depth less than 150 feet so that they are reachable by sunlight. Corals contain microscopic algae, called zooxanthellae, that provide the coral with food and give them their vibrant colors. On average, they grow about 1 mm to 4cm per year. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will speak to Dr. Dan Thornhill, Coral Reef Marine Scientist from Defenders of Wild Life (http://www.defenders.org) about this crisis. Clean Energy View: The Zeronauts- Leadership By Example Jul 23, 2013
    Show notes

A world of 9 billion people by mid-century will demand fundamental changes in our mindsets, behaviors, cultures, and overarching paradigm. Just as our species broke the Sound Barrier during the 1940s and 1950s, a new breed of innovator, entrepreneur, and investor is lining up to break the Sustainability Barrier. In his best-selling book, John Elkington introduces The Zeronauts – a new breed of innovator, determined to drive problems such as carbon, waste, toxics, and poverty to zero – as well as creating the first Zeronaut Roll of Honor, spotlighting 50 pioneers in the field of zero. Zeronauts are innovating in an astonishing range of areas, tackling hugely diverse economic, social, environmental, and governance challenges. To give a sense of progress to date, we zero in on five key challenges (the 5Ps): population growth, pandemics, poverty, pollution, and proliferation. The power of zero has been trumpeted, notably in relation to zero defects. This book spotlights key lessons learned in the field of total quality management – and introduces a five-stage "Pathways to Zero" model, running through from the Eureka! discovery moment to the point where a new way of doing things becomes endemic in the economy. In order to move from incremental to transformative change, we must embrace wider framings, deeper insights, higher targets, and longer time scales. This book investigates some ways in which leading Zeronauts are pushing change in relevant directions, with cases drawn from a spectrum of human activity – from water profligacy to human genital mutilation. If we learn from these pioneers, the twenty-first century could be our best yet. In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, hosts, June Stoyer and special guest host, Luis Mejia, Managing Partner, Murdock Capital Partners talk to John Elkington about The Zeronauts.

The Sugar Detox Diet Jul 18, 2013
    Show notes

America has an addiction problem, but it’s not just with drugs or alcohol—it’s with sugar. Sugar is in almost everything we eat—not just in the highly processed, fructose-soaked snacks we love, but hidden in “healthier” foods that most people wouldn’t expect, such as bread, fruit, and dairy. The average American consumes up to thirty-one pounds of sugar each year, even though a high-sugar diet can be detrimental to nearly all areas of health and beauty. The side effects aren’t just weight gain—they’re premature aging and increased risk of diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart disease, and even cataracts. In The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger by nutritionist Brooke Alpert and dermatologist Dr. Patricia Farris, readers are given everything they need to know to begin a healthier lifestyle through an easy, low-sugar diet. The Sugar Detox contains a comprehensive, one-month plan to wean readers of their sugar cravings. The plan starts with the three-day Sugar Fix—three days with no sugar, no exceptions. It’s accompanied by the three-day Skin Fix, a pampering regimen of soothing skin treatments such as sea salt baths and black tea masks to counteract sugar-related skin damage. Once the initial cleanse has been completed, The Sugar Detox provides a four-week schedule of menu plans and fifty recipes, arming readers with information on which foods to eat, which foods to avoid, and how it all affects their health and appearance. By eliminating sugar and incorporating small changes, people can lead a healthier lifestyle and look years younger. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer talks to co-author, Brooke Alpert, MS, RD, CDN about her best-selling book, The Sugar Detox Diet.

Clean Energy View: Bob Catell -The CEO and the Monk Jul 16, 2013
    Show notes

Corporate America is more or less known for distrust, employee mistreatment, and lack of ethics, to say the least. What if two men could create harmony between management and union workers as they generate profitability? Such was the case with the most unlikely duo, Bob Catell a luminary in the energy industry and Kenny Moore, a former Catholic Monk who tell their story of success in the best-selling book, The CEO and The Monk. It is the story of KeySpan, the nation's fifth largest energy giant and a profitable, Fortune 500 company and their simple belief in opting to "do the right thing." Before it was bought out by NationalGrid in February 2006, KeySpan received a 100% rating on the Corporate Equality Index released by the Human Rights Campaign starting in 2004, the third year of the report. The Human Rights Campaigns priorities include: prevention of hate crimes and HIV/AIDS; advocacy for healthcare benefits, marriage, and adoption rights for same-sex couples; lobbying for a federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act and gender identity anti-discrimination laws; combating gay bashing in schools; and building relationships with straight allies, ethnic groups, religious leaders, and youth. In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Robert Catell who was formerly the Chairman and CEO of KeySpan Corporation and KeySpan Energy Delivery, the former Brooklyn Union Gas. Following National Grid's acquisition of KeySpan Corporation, Mr. Catell became Chairman of National Grid, U.S. and Deputy Chairman of National Grid plc. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center at Stony Brook University, New York State Smart Grid Consortium, Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School, Futures in Education Endowment Fund and the NY Energy Policy Institute's Advisory Council.
