Biodiesel Power: Creating Renewable Fuel Aug 20, 2013
    Show notes

The race is on to find alternative energy solutions which will eliminate our dependency upon fossil fuels. One possibility is biodiesel. Biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease. With the number of new technologies emerging, biodiesel power has become one of the fastest growing industries because it reduces emissions, improves air quality and can be made in your own home! In Lyle Estill's Biodiesel Power: The Passion, the People, and the Politics of the Next Renewable Fuel, there is a chronicle of this emerging industry. Lightly touching on the technical aspects of the fuel, its qualities and specifications, the book is largely about the people and stories of the biodiesel movement. It explores the tensions between grassroots activists and their altruistic co-ops, the profit minded commercial producers and the voices of agribusiness, and the current administration - or "the coalition of the drilling." Far from a third party account, Biodiesel Power comes from one who has experienced it from the grease dumpster to the boardroom. Lyle Estill has made the journey from back yard brewing, to being part of a producer and distributor cooperative, to commercial production. In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to energy expert, Lyle Estill about biodiesel power. Stay tuned! Energy expert Lyle Estill is the president, co-founder and VP of Stuff at Piedmont Biofuels, and has won numerous awards for his commitment to sustainability, outreach, community development and leadership.

Hidden Dangers of Systemic Pesticides on Tulips & Bulbs Aug 19, 2013
    Show notes

Neonicotinoids have become a household name in the world of gardening as the global decline of our pollinators continues to make headlines. As defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency, neonicotinoids are a class of insecticides with a common mode of action that affects the central nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death. Mainly used as a seed treatment in agriculture, these systemic pesticides are also found in a myriad of gardening products such as plant treatments and pre-treated nursery plants. In a recent press release by Friends of the Earth, Neonicotinoids have been the focus of a plea urging consumers to avoid purchasing “bee-friendly” plants from garden centers in the United States, namely Lowe’s and Home Depot which are two of the largest chains. However, what many people do not know is that bulbs are also treated with these chemicals. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by Jeroen Koeman, President & Co-Founder of EcoTulips LLC., to discuss the use of systemic pesticides on tulips and other bulbs! Clean Energy View: Marcus Fairs Discusses "Green Design" Aug 13, 2013
    Show notes

Today's global economy relies on a massive demand for products, leading major resource consumption and growing pollution. However, out of great problems come great innovations and Dezeen.com's Marcus Fairs shows off some of the most brilliant, cutting-edge products that stemmed from a serious need for more eco-friendly designs around the world, in the US release of his book, Green Design: Creative Sustainable Designs for the Twenty-First Century. Unlike most design books which focus mainly on one niche, the unique inventions presented in Green Design, hand-picked by Dezeen.com founder and former Icon magazine editor Marcus Fairs, cover the full spectrum of eco-conscious products and structures, from water-filtering bicycles to apartment buildings with plant-based natural cooling systems; from solar-powered garden jar lights, to art prints created from non-toxic bacterial symbiosis. With vivid, full-color photos of each design and concise backgrounds of the designs and their creators, Marcus Fairs shows readers how a movement towards a greener lifestyle has become easier than ever before, without sacrificing fashion or function in product designs. Each product offered in this book caters to a specific need or desire – from cleaner water in developing countries to more energy efficient lighting in dance clubs, and eccentric found-art made from garbage to crank-powered computers – leaving no stone unturned in an effort to make every aspect of life, regardless of income or the region of the world, as green as the next great designer can conceive. In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Marcus Fairs about Green Design!
