The Edible Front Yard: Grow Food Instead of Grass Feb 26, 2016

Show notes

Year after year, homeowners spend countless hours perfecting their lawn as they go to extremes to make sure that the common dandelion and other misplaced plants never appear. Be that as it may, lawncare is a $30 billion industry, chock filled with products that contain toxic chemicals like Imidacloprid, which are part of the new breed of systemic pesticides called neonicotinoids. These chemicals will wipe out any chance for a butterfly or bumblebee to visit your home to pollinate the vegetables in your garden much less your pretty flowers. Many conscious gardeners are rethinking how they manicure their land. They simply convert the front lawn into an edible landscape! It not only contributes to good soil health which is critical to the environment but also helps to lower food bills. In The Edible Front Yard, author, Ivette Soler talks about how you can convert all or part of your front yard into an edible garden which can not only add texture and fragrance but a designer aesthetic appeal that will surely make your home the envy of your neighborhood. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer talks to designer and Germinatrix, Ivette Soler to discuss her new book, The Edible Front Yard! Stay tuned!

Is There A Disease In The Public Mind? Feb 24, 2016

Show notes

Have we learned from history? Are we repeating it again? It has been one hundred and fifty-five years since the United States fought the American Civil War. In this segment of The Organic View, host, June Stoyer talks to author, Thomas Fleming, who recently published, A Disease in the Public Mind: A New Understanding of Why We Fought the Civil War. By the time John Brown hung from the gallows for his crimes at Harper's Ferry, Northern abolitionists had made him a “holy martyr” in their campaign against Southern slave owners. This Northern hatred for Southerners long predated their objections to slavery. They were convinced that New England, whose spokesmen had begun the American Revolution, should have been the leader of the new nation. Instead, they had been displaced by Southern “slavocrats” like Thomas Jefferson. This malevolent envy exacerbated the South's greatest fear: a race war. Jefferson's cry, “We are truly to be pitied,” summed up their dread. For decades, extremists in both regions flung insults and threats, creating intractable enmities. By 1861, only a civil war that would kill a million men could save the Union. Thomas Fleming is a distinguished historian and the author of more than fifty books. A frequent guest on PBS, A&E, and the History Channel, Fleming has contributed articles to American Heritage, MHQ, and other magazines. He lives in New York. Is Society More Concerned About Health Or Body Image? Feb 17, 2016

Show notes

We hear all the time about weight gain, weight loss, how Americans are the heaviest we’ve ever been, and myriad plans for remedying our egregious fatness. And yet…what if a lot of what we’re told and what we believe simply isn’t true? Award-winning writer Harriet Brown set out to explore our relentless obsession with weight and thinness—with surprising results. In Body of Truth, Brown tackles the myths and realities of the “obesity epidemic,” exposing the biggest lies driving the rhetoric of obesity. With provocative prose and razor-sharp wit, she examines our tendency to find weight scapegoats (sugar and wheat are the current favorites), gives historical and contemporary context for what it means to be “fat” (making a strong case that it’s not a dirty word), and offers ways for all of us to think about weight and health with more nuance, accuracy, and respect. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host June Stoyer talks to Harriet Brown author of the best-selling book, Body of Truth, How Science, History, and Culture Drive Our Obsession with Weight--and What We Can Do About It.
