Haig's Coup - How Richard Nixon's Closest Aide Forced Him from Office Nov 17, 2024
    Show notes

When General Alexander M. Haig Jr. returned to the White House on May 3, 1973, he found the Nixon administration in worse shape than he had imagined. President Richard Nixon, reelected in an overwhelming landslide just six months earlier, had accepted the resignations of his top aides—the chief of staff H. R. Haldeman and the domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman—just three days earlier.
Haldeman and Ehrlichman had enforced the president’s will and protected him from his rivals and his worst instincts for four years. Without them, Nixon stood alone, backed by a staff that lacked gravitas and confidence as the Watergate scandal snowballed. Nixon needed a savior, someone who would lift his fortunes while keeping his White House from blowing apart. He hoped that savior would be his deputy national security adviser, Alexander Haig, whom he appointed chief of staff. But Haig’s goal was not to keep Nixon in office—it was to remove him.
In Haig’s Coup, Ray Locker uses recently declassified documents to tell the true story of how Haig orchestrated Nixon’s demise, resignation, and subsequent pardon. A story of intrigues, cover-ups, and treachery, this incisive history shows how Haig engineered the “soft coup” that ended our long national nightmare and brought Watergate to an end.

Jefferson Morley - Scorpion's Dance - The President, The Spymaster and Watergate
    Apr 5, 2023
It is 50 years since the Watergate scandal; the scandal which changed America forever. Journalist Jefferson Morley has a fine pedigree in both journalism and research. He joins Ed Opperman to talk about his work on the CIA, his commentary on the National Security State and the recent revelations concerning the JFK conspiracy.
He has researched the events and repercussions for democracy and society and the result is Scorpion's Dance.
For the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in: The untold story of President Richard Nixon, CIA Director Richard Helms, and their volatile shared secrets that ended a presidency. Scorpions' Dance by intelligence expert and investigative journalist Jefferson Morley reveals the Watergate scandal in a completely new light: as the culmination of a concealed, deadly power struggle between President Richard Nixon and CIA Director Richard Helms. Nixon and Helms went back decades; both were 1950s Cold Warriors, and both knew secrets about the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba as well as off-the-books American government and CIA plots to remove Fidel Castro and other leaders in Latin America. Both had enough information on each other to ruin their careers. After the Watergate burglary on June 17, 1972, Nixon was desperate to shut down the FBI's investigation. He sought Helms' support and asked that the CIA intervene―knowing that most of the Watergate burglars were retired CIA agents, contractors, or long-term assets with deep knowledge of the Agency's most sensitive secrets. The two now circled each other like scorpions, defending themselves with the threat of lethal attack. The loser would resign his office in disgrace; the winner, however, would face consequences for the secrets he had kept. Rigorously researched and dramatically told, Scorpions' Dance uses long-neglected evidence to reveal a new perspective on one of America's most notorious presidential scandals.

    William Dorsch Returns - Omnipotent - Don't Ask - Don't tell
    Nov 3, 2023
William Dorsch returns to the Opperman Report with more disturbing truths about the US system of justice, and how the Social services designed to protect, can do exactly the opposite with just a few minor circumstances, leading to the most abhorrent crimes.
We expect that criminals will lie but not the police.
Bill Dorsch a retired Chicago homicide detective understood that people when accused of committing crimes, especially in homicide cases, would make conscious decisions to lie when questioned. He hated being lied to but his task as an investigator was to discover the truth no matter where it would take him. He worked hard to gather evidence and testimony from individuals that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrator.
Bill returns to expand his narrative on John Wayne Gacy and other matters, and how, if the Police and Justice services worked as they should, so many more families could gain closure.

Dean Corll, the Candyman killer Nov 16, 2024

Tom B - Dean Corll, the Candyman killer
    June 7
Tom B was looking into serial killers when he came across the little known case of Texas lineman Dean Corll - known as the Candyman.
In doing so he has uncovered a massive ring of paedophiles, and a conspiracy which seemed to indicate these people were working together.
It's a horrifying tale of the seedy underbelly of suburbia, namely Houston Heights in Texas, where troubled kids or those who would not be missed were regularly the target of Corll and his co-conspirators.
Tom tells Ed Opperman about the rabbit hole he went down looking into Corll and his associations, and the cold, business like way these children were traded and eventually killed.
At the time of his arrest, Corll was responsible for at least 28 murders, but it is generally agreed his real total was much, much higher.
